When Ron Clark began teaching in 1995, his teacher gave him this advice, “If you can  1  the life of one child, you’ll be a success.” Up to now, Ron still doesn’t agree with that advice. When Ron entered a class, he decided to change every student’s life for the better.
Ron never planned on being a teacher. After  2 , he travelled around the world, living a life  3  of adventures(冒險), but after getting terribly sick, he went back to his hometown, North Carolina. Then he got  4  again and taught at a school there. “From then on it was like magic — I fell in love with teaching.” said Ron. After five years of teaching, he heard that some schools in East Harlem, New York were failing because there were  6  good teachers. “At that moment I had a(n)  6— it was like a calling,” he said. “And so I said, ‘I’m going to do it.”
Before school started, Ron went to every single student’s home to  7  with their families. He gave his students his home phone number, so if they had any  8  with their homework, they could call him. To connect with his students, Ron knew he should use special  9  of teaching. He learned to play funny games with them, gave them  10  lessons, and spent his time showing students  11  New York’s tourist attractions. His students studied harder and behaved better in  12 .
Because of his  13  in North Carolina and Harlem, Ron Clark has become one of the most successful teachers in America. And his book called The Essential 55, more than  14  else, has become very popular in the world.
Sold in over 25  15 , The Essential 55 has encouraged teachers around the world to influence the lives of all of their students. Ron Clark is now starting a new school in Atlanta, Georgia — probably his biggest adventure!

Look carefully at the back of a California state quarter. A man with a walking stick is pictured there. A bird called a California condor(大禿鷲)is flying overhead. Who is this man, and why is he so important that he is featured(處于顯著地位)on the back of a coin?
The man on this quarter is John Muir. Even as a child, Muir loved watching nature. As a young man, he spent much of his life exploring the beauty of the wilderness. He walked more than a thousand miles across the country, through fields and woods. John Muir liked writing about the places he visited, describing their beauty.
Muir also wrote about problems. In order to create more farmland for sheep and cattle, many trees were being cut down. This made Muir unhappy and worried, because he knew that trees were important to forests and to the animals that lived in them.Muir believed that nature should be conserved(保護(hù))instead of being changed by human beings. He wrote articles in magazines and newspapers to spread the word about conserving forests. Soon, others began to listen.
Muir wrote letters to important people, such as President Theodore Roosevelt. The president admired Muir’s love for nature. When Roosevelt came to visit Muir in California. Muir convinced(說服)the president to go camping with him for three nights under the trees so they could talk about conservation. Later, President Roosevelt set aside 148 million acres of land for national forests and established(建立)five national parks. National parks are large areas of land that are protected from development. This means that people cannot build homes or businesses there. One of these parks is Yosemite National Park, the area that is featured on the back of the California quarter.
Though it has been almost one hundred years since John Muir died, people continue his work today. His work as a conservationist helped us to see the beauty of our natural world. John Muir made us understand the importance of protecting our earth and our resources---then, now, and for the future.
小題1:Why did President Theodore Roosevelt visit John Muir?
A.Because Roosevelt loved watching nature.
B.Because Roosevelt received letters from John Muir.

D.Because he once wrote several letters to President Theodore Roosevelt.
小題3:What is the writer’s purpose of writing this article?

Long long ago, a young man found a spring of delicious clean water while he was going through the desert. He brought some back to the oldest man in his village, who had been his teacher before. After a four-day journey he sent the water to the old man who took a deep drink, smiled warmly and thanked his student for the sweet water. The young man returned to his village happily. The next day, the teacher let another student taste the water. He spat it out, saying it was awful. It went bad because it had stayed in the old leather container(皮革容器) for so many days in such hot weather. The student asked his teacher why he pretended(假裝) to like the awful water. The teacher replied, "You only tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for love and kindness. And nothing could be sweeter than these."
I think we understand this lesson best when we receive small gifts of love from very young kids. Whether it's a slice of bread or a piece of colored paper, the natural and right response(反應(yīng)) is to show our thanks and happiness because we get love from the gift.
To show our thanks doesn't always come naturally. Unfortunately, most children and many adults only see the thing itself. They never feel the meaning of the thing. We should tell ourselves and teach our children about showing thanks and happiness to the persons who give the gifts from their hearts because gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.
小題1:Where did the young man find the water?
A.In a spring.B.In a river.C.In a lake.D.In a village.
小題2:How long did the water stay in the old leather container?
A.Six days.B.Five days.C.Four days.D.Three days.
小題3:What does the word “replied” mean?
A.smiledB.criedC.a(chǎn)nsweredD.got angry
小題4:According to the passage, what is the right response when we get gifts from others?
A.We eat it up at once.
B.We only see the thing itself.
C.We think about the meaning of the bread.
D.We usually show our thanks and happiness naturally.
小題5:What does the writer want to tell us?
A.We should never receive anything from others.
B.We should show thanks and happiness when we get the gifts from the heart.
C.We should pretend to love the things given by others all the time.
D.We should give gifts from our hearts.

James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves(奴隸). His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.
“J.C.,” he replied.
She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.
Owens ran his first race at the age of 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time in order to pay for his education. As a second year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.
A week before the Big Ten games, Owens fell down when he went downstairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he was helped in and out of the car that drove him to the games. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he should give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.
The stage was set for Owens’ success at the Olympic Games in Berlin(柏林) the next year, and his success would come to be considered as not only athletic but also political(政治的). Hitler(希特勒) did not give congratulations to any of the black American winners.
“It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn’t go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”
After returning from Berlin, he received no telephone calls from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.
Owens’ Olympic success made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and racing against cars and dogs.
“Sure, it worried me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”
In the end, however, his gold medals changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”
