Difficult times often bring out the best in people. Many well-known people come to help those who are in trouble. And this was the case for basketball player Yao Ming. He hosted a television show in Shanghai and raised US $ 300,000 to help researchers (研究員) find a medical cure. Fund-raising, or charity, is an act of goodwill(好意) towards others.
Charities in the West have more ways. Look at a typical day for Ruth, a rich woman in the UK, for example. Ruth wakes up in the morning and collects her post. There’s a letter addressed to her with a picture of a half-dead, beaten(筋疲力盡的) horse. It’s from a charity asking Ruth to donate money to save the animals. She turns on the television, and sees a picture of a wide–eyed child dying of hunger in Africa with a request (請求) for money to help the child. The tickets for the charity shows often cost her a lot of money, but she doesn’t mind because most of the money is going to a charity that fights AIDS. She feels good about going because she’s helping the sick.
Edna, a little old lady, looks after a second-hand shop—a charity shop. Any profit (收益) it has made goes to a cancer(癌癥) charity. Now that she doesn’t have to work, she has lots of time to offer her services for free.
For people like Yao Ming, Ruth and Edna, charity is a virtue (美德) that holds the same importance in life as faith and hope. “As you look back on your life, the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others,” said Scottish writer Henry Drummond.
小題1:Yao Ming hosted a television show to _____.
A.make more moneyB.raise money for his basket team
C.make himself more famousD.raise money for researchers to find a cure for SARS
小題2:We can infer (推斷)from the passage that _____.
A.Edna may not be a rich lady but she is willing to do something for others
B.Ruth is angry because she has been asked to donate too much money
C.Ruth leads a busy life and she feels very tired
D.Yao Ming wants to be a television host
小題3:Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Only Yao Ming, Ruth and Edna try their best to do things for charity.
B.Ruth has given a lot of support to charity although she is not very rich.
C.The writer hopes that more people can do things for charity.
D.Edna is very rich because she has her own shop.
小題4:One morning, Ruth received a letter with a picture of a horse in it because _____.
A.she lost her horse
B.a charity wanted her to donate some money
C.she loved horse very much
D.she wanted to keep a horse as a pet
小題5:The underlined(劃線) part in the last paragraph probably means that _____.
A.what impresses people deeply is what they have done for others
B.when you want to do something for others, you need stand out
C.the moment you stand out, you can do something for others
D.when you look back sometimes, you need stand out

小題2:A
小題3:C
小題4:B
小題5:A

小題1:細節題。結合Yao Ming. He hosted a television show in Shanghai and raised US $ 300,000 to help researchers (研究員) find a medical cure可知答案。
小題2:推斷題。Ruth確實繁忙但并沒有流露出feel tired 之意,尋讀“The ticket cost her a small fortune, but she doesn’t mind…” 和 “She feels good about going because she’s helping the sick.”
It’s from a charity asking Ruth to donate money to save the animals 可知答案
小題5:語義推測題,選D。劃線部分本意是“當你回顧你的生活時,往往是你幫助了別人的那些時刻或情景會在你的記憶中清晰地顯現(stand out)。” 因此選A。

On December 23, 2008, Niu Niu held a piano concert at the national Grand Theater (國家大劇院). As an eleven-year-old boy, he became the youngest pianist ever to perform a concert at the theater.
Never too young to learn
Niu Niu was born into a musical family in Xiamen. His father Zhang was a piano teacher. Niu Niu grew up listening to his father’s students playing the piano. At just three years old, Niu Niu asked his father to teach him to play, too.
“I gave Niu Niu some sheet music and helped him find the eight notes when he first played the piano. To my surprise, he played nearly 80 percent correct,” said the father. He used to think that three years old is too young an age to learn piano, but Niu Niu changed his mind. He continued to allow Niu Niu to watch his teaching of other students and gave him more sheet music to play.
Playing for fun
Zhang started teaching Niu Niu standard piano lessons when he was four. Unlike many other piano teachers, Zhang didn’t insist that Niu Niu play strictly with the correct finger positioning (位置). He said that the strict finger positioning would rob some kids of fun of playing. So Niu Niu could play in his own way. He could play the tone successfully. But Niu Niu was required to play the music without looking at the sheet music. Now he can remember about 80 pages.
Rising to fame
In 2003, at the age of 6, Niu Niu successfully held a sole concert in his hometown Xiamen. At the age of 8, he gave a performance at the International Piano Festival in France. At the age of 10, Niu Niu played in London and his performance was praised by Prince Charles. Last year, this young pianist published his first album “Niu Niu Plays Mozart” and over 10,000 copies have been sold in the world.
We are very glad to see a young Chinese pianist rising in the music world.
小題1:How old was Niu Niu when he performed a concert at the National Grand Theater?
小題2:What was Niu Niu’s father?
小題3:What did Niu Niu’s father feel when Niu Niu played nearly 80 percent of the sheet music correct?
小題4:What did Niu Niu’s father say about the strict finger positioning?

One day, many years ago, when I was working as a psychologist(心理學家) in England, David was brought into my office. His face was pale(蒼白的)and he looked at his own feet.
David lost his father when he was two years old and lived with his mother and grandfather ever since. But the year before he turned 13, his grandfather died and his mother was killed in a car accident. His teacher told me that he refused to talk to others from then on.

Choose the best answer (根據文章內容,選擇最恰當的答案)
Traditionally, the President is the highest-pad public employee. A salary of $ 400,000, along with other benefits, is paid to the President annually. But President Obama’s income for 2008 was far more than that, according to the White House.
The White House recently published the tax returns (納稅申報單)of Obama and Vice –president Joe Biden. Tax returns are reports of tax that a person has to pay. They often include income information used to calculate the tax. In the US, people whose incomes are over a certain amount have to file tax returns(納稅申報)every year. The tax returns of government officials are open to the public. This transparency helps to prevent corruption(腐敗)。
From Obama’s tax returns , we can see that the President and first lady President’s two books Dreams From My Father and The Audacity of Hope(《無畏的夢想》). The two books, published in 1995 and 2006,are very popular and have been on the bestseller(暢銷書)list for a long time.
The Obama’s income is down from 2007,when they made $4.2 million. However, that is still far more than former US President George Bush earned, who reported a total of $719,274 for his final year. The Obamas’ income also greatly exceeded(超出)that of Biden, who reported a family income of $2269,256.That’s about a tenth of what the Obamas earned. As Vice-president, Biden earns a salary of $220,000.US families earn an average income of about $50,000.
The Obama’s tax returns also show that together, the President and his wife paid about $933,000 in taxes. They gave $172,050 —nearly 6.5 percent of their earnings —to different charity groups. In the US, if a person gives his money to churches and non-profit(非盈利)organizations, the law reduces his or her taxes. This is one reason why rich people in the US like to give money to charity.

小題4:The Obamas have given_______ percent of their earnings to charity.

A.Because it can help to prevent corruption
B.Because it can make government officials well-known to the public.
C.Because it can help government officials to get more money.
