On 26th December, 2004, there was a big earthquake under the Indian Ocean Area．It was the most powerful earthquake in the world in the past 40 years．The earthquake caused a large tsunami．The wall of water was so high as 20 meters．The tsunami attacked twelve countries in southeast Asia and killed thousands of people．It was the biggest natural disaster in 2004．
A newspaperman from Shanghai survived the disaster．He wrote his story and put it in his home page．He wrote, “It was 9∶15, 26th December, 2004．my wife and I went to the seaside to have breakfast．The blue sea looked quiet and beautiful．Many people in swimming costumes were enjoying the bright sunshine in the sea, on the chairs or under the trees．They were having a great time．”
“At the very beginning we heard a big noise like a bomb while I was walking on the beach with my wife．People in the sea ran wildly towards the bank and screamed, ‘Water is coming!Water is coming!’ The wall of water made the boats and people fall over．We ran to a higher place as quickly as we could．We didn’t find a shelter until we ran about 3 kilometers．”
“We looked back below the small hill and saw a terrible picture．The flow(水流) of water was so strong that ears fell upside down．The flood washed away everything on the seaside．”
Up to 3rd January, 2005, the number of victims as a result of the earthquake and tsunami was over 140,000．The largest number of victims was in Indonesia．And it is said that half of the victims were children．
26th December of the year 2004 was the unluckiest day．People call the day “Black Sunday”．

You have probably heard it before, most likely from your English teacher. If you want to become a good writer, read good writing. Unluckily, you may not have understood what did good to you and even what you were supposed to get from that experience.
As you start reading a book, poem, or story, do so with no thought at all and the experience will improve your writing. Just read for pleasure to begin with, or to learn. As you progress through the work, think about whether it is “easy” reading or not. Do you become so interested in the subject and flow of the writing that you completely forget the person who wrote it, or does the composition sometimes call too much attention to itself through words and phrases that seem out of place or unexpected? The second situation is a chance to learn from the writer’s mistakes. In fact, the reader should not have to worry about how a writer does “his thing” ... he should be able to just enjoy and learn. Every time a word strikes you as poorly chosen, stop to consider why it has this effect. Also, do not spend a lot of time analyzing (分析) the passage but put more efforts in enjoying it from the whole.
Another thing I do, particularly with nonfiction (非小說) books, is to select a part to read as if it is a completely separate work. Once again, read as a common reader rather than a critic (批評家). For learning how words and phrases work together on the most basic level, however, nothing is more suitable than devoting yourself to reading poems. A poet is often trying to put a book’s worth of meaning and feelings into lines, and every side of the work shows a very close attention to craft (工藝).
As you can see, there is no simple way of reading to improve your writing. The key is not to make it boring. Select writers you admire or like most, and enjoy their works as anyone else would. As long as you are reading, you are improving yourself as a writer.

Han Geng is a member of the popular boy band Super Junior in South Korea. The band has 12 members. He is the only Chinese.
Han was born in Heilongjiang Province on January 9th, 1984. In 1997, he went to Beijing to learn how to dance with nobody together. In 2001, a Korean music company discovered the 17-year-old boy. After that, he spent three years in South Korea receiving lessons in singing, dancing and acting.
When he got to Korea, he couldn’t speak any Korean. He worked very hard to learn it. He wrote the words on small pieces of paper and stuck them on his walls. “Every night I read and tried to remember some words before I went to bed,” he said.
Now he can not only speak Korean but also sing in Korean. Han says that he was born for the stage. “When I’m on stage, there’s nothing in my mind. I just go with the flow of the music,” he said.
Unlike on stage, the young man is very quiet in life. He likes to do things on his own—reading, listening to music and watching horror films. He hopes someday he can play the lead role in an action movie, and be like his hero Andy Lau.
