1Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage

1.We have always been warned of the dangers of the forest fires. They cause     1    to a forest. They kill many plants and animals in an eco-system, which is a group of living things and their environment. But have you ever heard of a forest fire that can be     2     for a forest?

2.People start some of the fires with special reasons to actually do well to the eco-system.

3.In fact, fires are a natural part of any eco-system. Without fires, the oldest and largest trees would stop sunlight from reaching the forest floor. Fires can       3       some of these old trees. When the trees die, they provide something good for the earth. New trees can grow strong and healthy in their place.

4.Some trees even need fires to grow. These trees hold their seeds(種子) inside. Heats from a fire allow the coat of the seeds to open up. Then the seeds fall to the ground and have the 4 to grow.

5.Scientists, who know about nature’s needs, start some of these fires, called controlled burns. A fire is started and kept under control. This way, the fire does not spread out of the area or 5    a large space of the forest. Fires can be dangerous for animals. Even when animals continue to live after forest fires, they can go hungry   6     their food has been damaged in the fire. Small, controlled fires mean that animals will not have to move far to find food. After some time, small plants begin to grow. Animals return soon after the plants return. This   7  makes an eco-system.

6.So the next time you hear about a forest fire, think about the good as well as the bad. It may take a new eco-system a while to return, but it will likely come back stronger and healthier than ever.

1.They cause       to a forest. They kill many plants and animals in an eco-system.

2.But have you ever heard of a forest fire that can be      for a forest? People start some of the fires with a special reasons to actually do good to the eco-system.

3.Without fires, the oldest and largest trees would stop sunlight from reaching the forest floor. Fires can       some of these old trees. When the trees die, they provide something good for the earth. 所以答案選get rid of除掉、擺脫

4.Then the seeds fall to the ground and have the    to grow.

5.This way, the fire does not spread out of the area or    a large space of the forest.

6.They can go hungry        their food has been damaged in the fire. 所以選because。

7.After some time, small plants begin to grow. Animals return soon after the plants return. This     makes an eco-system.

1Choose the best answer (根據文章內容,選擇最恰當的答案)

Traditionally, the President is the highest-pad public employee. A salary of $ 400,000, along with other benefits, is paid to the President annually. But President Obama’s income for 2008 was far more than that, according to the White House.

The White House recently published the tax returns (納稅申報單)of Obama and Vice –president Joe Biden. Tax returns are reports of tax that a person has to pay. They often include income information used to calculate the tax. In the US, people whose incomes are over a certain amount have to file tax returns(納稅申報)every year. The tax returns of government officials are open to the public. This transparency helps to prevent corruption(腐敗)。

From Obama’s tax returns , we can see that the President and first lady President’s two books Dreams From My Father and The Audacity of Hope(《無畏的夢想》). The two books, published in 1995 and 2006,are very popular and have been on the bestseller(暢銷書)list for a long time.

The Obama’s income is down from 2007,when they made $4.2 million. However, that is still far more than former US President George Bush earned, who reported a total of $719,274 for his final year. The Obamas’ income also greatly exceeded(超出)that of Biden, who reported a family income of $2269,256.That’s about a tenth of what the Obamas earned. As Vice-president, Biden earns a salary of $220,000.US families earn an average income of about $50,000.

The Obama’s tax returns also show that together, the President and his wife paid about $933,000 in taxes. They gave $172,050 —nearly 6.5 percent of their earnings —to different charity groups. In the US, if a person gives his money to churches and non-profit(非盈利)organizations, the law reduces his or her taxes. This is one reason why rich people in the US like to give money to charity.

D. People whose incomes are over a certain amount.

4.The Obamas have given_______ percent of their earnings to charity.

A. 10              B. 6.5              C. 9.7          D. 4.3

5.Why should the tax returns of government officials be open to the public?.

B. Because it can make government officials well-known to the public.

1Choose the best answer (根據短文內容,選擇最恰當的答案)

You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?

Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 players, you shouldn’t turn it up too high.

Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 off and put it away. Libraries, and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to listen on your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.

Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.

It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.
