Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe is born 10 feet high and usually lands on its back. Within seconds it rolls over its legs under its body. Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its children to the reality(現實) of life.

In his book, A View from the Zoo, Gary Richmond describes how a new-born giraffe learns its first lesson.

The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she puts herself directly over her child. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable(不合情理的) thing. She throws her long leg and kicks her baby, so that it’s sent sprawling(四腳朝天).

When it doesn’t get up, the process is repeated again and again. The struggle to rise is important. As the baby giraffe grows tired, the mother kicks it again. Finally, it stands for the first time on its shaky(搖晃的) legs. Then the mother giraffe kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it got up. In the wild, a baby giraffe must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with its group, where there’s safety.

Another writer named Irving Stone understood this. He spent a lifetime studying greatness, writing stories about such men as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin.

Stone was once asked if he had found something that runs through the lives of all these great people. He said, “I write about people who sometime in their life have a dream of something. They’re beaten over the head, knocked down and for years they get nowhere. But every time they stand up again. And at the end of their lives they’ve realized some small parts of what they set out(著手) to do .”

2.根據In his book, A View from the Zoo, Gary Richmond describes how a new-born giraffe learns its first lesson.可知,本書就是關于新出生的長頸鹿的第一課。所以本題選A。

3.通過閱讀全文,我們發現文中提到的名人與長頸鹿在某些方面非常相似。所以本題選D。

4.根據Stone was once asked if he had found something that runs through the lives of all these great people.

An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, and you’re not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. When you’re the guest, you should just make yourself at home. That’s what hospitality(款待) is all about: making people feel at home when they’re not.
The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests squirm(難為情). Giving your host a gift is not just a social manner in some cultures-it’s expected. But in American culture, a guest is not necessary to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring a small present to their host to show their thanks. The right gifts for the host might be flowers, candy, and you can bring toys if the family has small children. If you choose not to bring a gift, dont worry. No one will even notice.

One of my favourite things to do is hiking in mountains. Because nobody likes the idea of getting lost, I always prepare before every trip. But what’s the best navigation tool, a Global Positioning System (GPS) or a good old map and compass? Five of my friends and I hiked through the mountains on a trail I marked. One team of three carried a GPS, and the other team used a map and compass.

It took the GPS team 3 hours and 11 minutes to get through the whole hike, however, it took the map and compass team only 2 hours and 49 minutes. The biggest problem the GPS team met was that they lost the satellite signal (衛星信號) in some places. With no map or compass, they had to walk around until they were in a place where the signal was good. The map and compass team was able to spot (認出) different landmarks, compare them to their maps and then use the compass to point them in the right direction.

When I head out on my future hikes, I’m bringing a map, a compass and a GPS to show me the way.

1.The writer prepares before every trip because he doesn’t _________.

A.like the old map or compass

B.know how to use the GPS

C.want to get lost in mountains

D.want to get into the mountains alone

2.The two teams _________.

A.had the same navigation tool

B.went along the same trail

C.had the same problem

D.finished the whole hike at the same time

3.In the end, the writer found out _________.

A.the map and the compass were too old navigation tools to use any more

B.it wasn’t necessary to bring a map and a compass together with a GPS

C.the GPS had some bad points in hiking in mountains

D.he wouldn’t use a GPS any more
