When the Audet family turns on the lights at Blue Farm, they are using electricity that comes from cows—cow manure (糞肥), to be specific.
Cows produce a lot of wastes. One cow can create 30 gallons of wastes each day. Now imagine the output of over 1,000 cows at Blue Farm. That’s really a big amount.
When farmers clean their barns, they put the wastes in a big heap, and spread some of them on their fields for fertilizer(肥料). But now places like Blue Spruce Farm have a new way of using cow wastes. They use them to produce electricity.
Here’s how it works: A big machine moves back and forth cleaning the barn floor. “The cows aren’t bothered,” says Marie Audet. “They are animals of habit; they get used to it, and just lift one foot and then another to let it go by.”
The machine pushes the manure into a big 600-gallon tank like a small swimming pool. The tank is called a digester (化糞池) because what happens there is just like what happens inside a cow: Bacteria(細菌) get to work and continue to digest the manure.
Methane gas (甲烷、沼氣)in the atmosphere is known as a “greenhouse” gas because it keeps heat just like a greenhouse does, causing our planet to warm up. That’s an environmental concern. But the digester has a good result. Its gas is kept and used to power electric generators (發電機).
At Blue Farm, the generators make enough electricity to power 400 homes. The Audet family sells the extra electricity they can’t use themselves.
【小題1】We learn from the text that the Audet family is using cow wastes to ______.

A.make electricity B.produce fertilizerC.build their farm D.feed the cows
【小題2】How are the cow wastes collected into the digester at Blue Farm?
A.Marie Audet does the workB.The job is done by machine
C.The cows lift the cow wastesD.Bacteria get to work on them
【小題3】 According to the passage, which of the following is changed into electricity?
A.The power of moving water. B.The heat of burning coal.
C.The power of sunlight.D.The heat of the methane gas
【小題4】The new way of using cow wastes at Blue Farm might be best described as ______.
A.reducingB.savingC.recyclingD.changing
【小題5】 What is the main purpose for writing the passage?
A.To introduce a new way of making electricityB.To explain how a new energy works better
C.To show a new rebuilding plan for a big farmD.To explain the reasons for green house effect

Not long ago, I opened an interesting e-mail from Jennifer, a friend of mine. “I’ve realized I want to be around people who make me happy,” she wrote, “I’ve been seeing how I feel after communicating with different people and making a mental list of who I feel good about. And you’re on my list.”
Then she invited me — and 11 other women— to a “Movie Night” to be held every six weeks at her house. We’d chat, eat, and watch feel-good movies. She made it clear in her invitation that there was no stress to show up to all or any movie nights. Wonderful! I e-mailed her back immediately. I was in.
Later, Jennifer told me she had some puzzled reactions to her invitation. Though all the women were willing to join, some said they didn’t see themselves as cheerful people. “I’ve told them they didn’t have to be cheerful around me all the time. I invited them because they made me feel happy,” she says.
Research shows that gatherings such as Jennifer’s make sense. In a US study, researchers measured(測量) the happiness of 4739 people at regular intervals (間隔) over 20 years. The study found that a person’s happiness depends on(取決于) the happiness of people they connect with. Amazingly, it also found that happiness spreads not only between direct friends, but also among friends of your friends’ friends! And those good feelings seem to be the most contagious (傳染性的) among friends of the same sex.
“People with more supportive friends are less likely to develop sadness,” says Dr Toupey Luft, a psychologist in Penticyon, British Columbia. “Though you can’t choose your family or workmates, you do have control over friendships.” With a little effort, you can add more positive(樂觀的) relationships to your social circle. Here’s how…

Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there's too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.
Preview--if it's long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.
Here's how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn't give you all the details. It keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want--or need--to read.
Skim--if it's short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading --like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.
Here's how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we'll get a similar idea of what it's all about.
【小題1】How many skills are recommended in this passage?

A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.
【小題2】What does the underlined word "preview" mean in Chinese?
A.精讀B.默讀C.朗讀D.略讀
【小題3】What should we NOT do when we read sports news in a daily paper according to the passage?
A.Read the last two paragraphs carefully.B.Get our eyes to move fast.
C.Sweep our eyes across each line.D.Pick up only a few key words in each line.
【小題4】 What is the best title for this passage?
A.How to read faster B.What to readC.When to read D.Why we should read

閱讀下面短文,根據短文內容完成表格中所缺信息,每空一詞。

One of the most common questions I am asked is whether, when, and how to follow up after a job interview. Following up in some way is necessary. Yes, you can get a job without it, but if you compete with other top candidates(候選人), following up can sometimes help you when the other candidate doesn’t. Here’s how to follow up well:

Send a thank-you note at once. E-mail is fine for this and has the advantage of arriving faster, but handwritten notes are still appreciated (欣賞). And if there are many interviews(面試), send a thank-you note each time.

Find out their timeline. Hopefully, you asked about their timeline in the interview itself, but if you didn’t, follow up within a week to strengthen your interest and politely ask what they expect their timeline for a decision to be.

Be patient. Most commonly, job seekers are too worried about the result. It doesn’t look worried to express your interest in the job or check in to ask about the timeline.

Don’t be nervous if you don’t hear from them at once. The hiring process often takes longer than a candidate would like, maybe the decision makers are out of town. If you’re past the time they indicated you would hear something, this isn’t necessarily cause for nervousness. Hiring often ends up taking longer than expected. Just politely follow up, explain you’re very interested but understand that hiring can take time, and ask if they have the latest timeline.
