D
Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power”.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal(日志) of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem—why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half way there.
Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

閱讀表達 (滿分 10 分)
(1)The half-empty coffee cups, still standing next to their plates, tell of a morning like others. And yet, that grey covering of dust that everything wears tells a different story: it tells of screams, tears, confusion, terror and blood.
(2)Now the restaurant in the World Trade Center will never again serve breakfast. And never again will all those people go there to eat or work --- those people of America whose faces have entered our hearts. So many people whose faces we associate with life and liveliness _______ tonight. So many words remain unsaid, and so much happiness has been destroyed. In their places are tear-stained faces. My generation has seen this. On Monday, a fight with my sister and a bad grade seemed to be the biggest problems in the world. Tonight, so many people across the country know that America’s pain is at its worst ever. We have read about World War II, and we have seen the black-and-white pictures. But to most students, that’s an event on a textbook page that would never happen today.
(3) After all, this was a time of peace and wealth --- the United States was powerful and successful. There would be no more wars, and we were lucky to live in such a time. But when those planes hit; when firefighters with terror on their faces ran among the parts of the buildings that had fallen; when people screamed for their family members; when history was unfolding before our eyes, in full, clear colour ---- then we knew the world had been changed.
(4) Everything that had happened in the past seemed to take on new life through September 11, 2001. And when they say this is the worst wound in American soil, I say, I thought this place was an empire. And I say, I thought this was a time of peace. And I say, I thought we were safe.
(5) Knowing how many human beings turned to ashes in a second, and seeing some jumps from the buildings, I know that my generation is growing up in a world where mankind can still be evil. But seeing those heroes risk lives among the castle-like ruins, and seeing the eager blood donors at the hospitals, my generation has learned that tears are allowed, that mankind can also be beautiful, and that the ghost of evil will never defeat the spirit of good.

Back those photos up

The images were striking. Homes on the East Coast were washed away by Superstorm Sandy. People were in tears, picking up faded photographs, among their only remaining possessions.

If that doesn’t move you to get serious about safekeeping your lifetime of memories, what will? The digital age offers tools never imaginable before—including one-click access to a lifetime of family photos.

Here is a brochure on how to back up (存) your photos and save them online, where they can live forever and be accessible in good times and bad.

Scanning

The first step for those old photos is to scan them and save them to a digital format. Most printers come with scanners these days, so that’s an easy but extremely time-consuming step.

Storing the photos

With your scans in place, import the photos into your computer, and back them up.

You could make multiple copies of the disks and spread them to loved ones. Or you could choose external(外接的) hard drives or USB thumb drive, and add your photo and video collection from your computer.

Online backup

If you need lots of space, look at a pure online backup service, Caronite.

Caronite backs up 300 million files daily. Once you sign up, it starts to pick up everything you have on your hard drive. But photo collection on your computer’s main hard drive charges for $59 a year.

Cloud Storage

For folks who don’t need automatic backup, but instead want to take a more active approach, Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft’s SkyDrive let you store files online by yourself, share and instantly access them. All offer free options—2GB of free storage for Dropbox, 5GB for Google and 7GB for SkyDrive. But if you want more, you need to pay.

Bottom Line

The hard drive or flash drive is the cheapest and easiest. But drives can fail. Online services are more expensive, but more secure. With more of us switching back and forth between our computers, such services are the best way to get access to our data from wherever we are.

1.Why does the author mention Superstorm Sandy?

A.To tell the background of the scanning photos.

B.To describe a severe natural disaster.

C.To attract the readers’ interest in the backups.

D.To win the readers’ sympathy.

2.What can we know from the passage?

A.Scanning photos take little time but costs a lot.

B.Caronite charges for backing up photos from hard drive.

C.Google Drive offers unlimited free photo storage on line.

D.The hard drive or flash drive is the cheapest and safest.

3.Which of the following allows storing files automatically?

A.Dropbox.          B.SkyDrive.          C.Caronite.          D.Flash drive.

4.The main purpose of the passage is to _____.

A.introduce some of the storage services

B.tell real stories about storage services

C.describe the functions of storage services

D.argue about the advantage of storage services

科目:高中英語 來源:2010-2011學年河南省五市畢業班第二次聯合考試英語試題 題型:閱讀理解

One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.

When we see something we don’t like, we wish it could be different -- we cry out for something better. That may be human nature, or perhaps it’s something that’s ingrained(根深蒂固的)in our culture.

The root of unhappiness is that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It’s not bad or good, as it just is.”

An example: in my recent post(帖子), A Beautiful Method to Find Peace of Mind, quite a few commentators thought my outlook was negative, pessimistic, or fatalistic(聽天由命的)... because I said you should expect people to mess up, expect things to go differently from what you planned. Above all, you should embrace that.

It’s too negative to expect something to go wrong, they said. However, I think it’s only negative if you see it as negative, or if you judge it as bad.

Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works -- as the way things actually are. And try to understand why they are that way.

Does it mean you can never change things? Not at all. But changing things is not because you can’t accept things as they are, but because you enjoy the process of change of learning and growing.

Can we make this world a better place? Again, that’s an assumption that it’s a bad place fight now. But instead, you could say the world is just what it is -- and that’s neither good nor bad. You can say that you’ll continue to try to do things to help others, to grow as a person, to make a difference in this world -- not because you’re such a bad person now, but because that’s the path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path.

As you catch yourself judging, and wishing for different -- try a different approach: accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.

1. Which of the following statements is correct according to the author?

    A. We can never change things because we can’t accept them.

    B. We shouldn’t try to do whatever we can to help others and make a difference.

    C. It’s wrong of you to expect things to go differently.

    D. There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

2. What’s the main idea of the whole passage?

    A. The world is a good place for us to live in.

    B. Unhappiness comes from what we want to be different.

    C. You might as well accept the world as it is and try to embrace it.

    D. Let’s make the world more beautiful.

3.Where does the passage probably come from?

    A. A novel.       B. A news story.      C. A travel guide.     D. A magazine.
