Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences .Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars . Often they relive (重新體驗) these experiences in nightmares .

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill ,which will help people forget bad memories . The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience . They hope it might reduce , or possible erase (抹去) the effect of painful memories .

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain . So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced , not that the memories are eased .

The research has caused a great deal of argument . Some think it is a bad idea , while others support it . Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war .

They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories . “Some memories can ruin people’s lives . They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare . They usually come with very painful emotions ,” said Roger Pitman , a professor of psychiatry (精神病學) at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve a lot of that suffering .”

But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (物質). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past . “All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are . I’m not sure we’d want to wipe those memories out.” said Rebecca Dresser , a medical ethicist (倫理學家).

Some people fear that although the drug would first be used in only very serious cases , it would become more and more common . “People always have the ability to misuse science,” said Joeph Le Doux, a New York University memory researcher . “All we want to do is help people have better control of memories .”

What’s the main idea of the text ?

A.People often suffer from bad memories .

B.American researchers are trying to develop a pill .

C.Forget bad memories , and be happy .

D.The research has cause a heated argument .

The underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refers to “       ”.

A.the new drug          B.the research into the drug

C.the memory            D.the chemical in the drug

Which of the following is not the opinion of the supporters ?

A.The pill can erase all the memories in the past

B.Some memories can ruin people’s lives. The pill can relieve emotional suffering .

C.The pill can also help many other types of people who suffer from terrible memories .

D.The pill can also prevent or treat troubling memories in soldiers after war

Which of the following is not the opinion of the opponents (反對者)?

A.Our memories give us our identity .

B.The memories help humanity avoid mistake of the past .

C.The drug should be used in only very serious cases .

D.People may not be sure whether they want to wipe the memories out .

It could be inferred from the passage that         .

A.the pill has been developed and will be more and more common

B.the pill has helped soldiers forget bad experiences during the war .

C.The pill is being tested on some people by some researchers .

D.The pill will be forbidden because people have different opinions of it .

Some time ago during my vacation period, I traveled to Europe to tour the various parts of France. Our tour group was made up of forty—five travelers from different countries. My three friends and I made up the Canadian team on the bus.
As time passed we got to know each Other better and in some ways the new friendships that grew became as valuable and as memorable as the trip itself.
On the last day of the tour we were traveling through the peaceful French countryside when our guide came on the microphone. He said,“We are presently passing through World War I battlefields just south of Vimy Ridge. If you look to your right, just across the field there, you will see the war memorial that the people of France built to the Canadian soldiers who fought so bravely here.Even today some residents from the surrounding towns place flowers on the memorial regularly. My dear Canadian friends at the back of the bus, I would like to say thank you for the unselfish acts of your Canadian soldiers.”
Across the grassy field, the stone monument stood proud against the French sky.A Canadian flag rippled softly in the calm breeze.Lost in the moment, I could imagine the sights and sounds of war.Suddenly an unexpected wave of emotion swept over me.I felt great sadness for those men who never returned home to Canada, but at the same time my heart was filled with an enormous sense of pride.Tears welled up in my eyes.I was embarrassed by my uncontrolled reaction. As I turned around I realized that each of my friends had experienced the same feelings, their eyes also wet with tears.

E
“You will remember this night forever,” he told me. My friend was taking me dumpster(垃圾桶)diving for the first time. We both needed costumes for a party so he decided to show me around a few of the city’s finest waste baskets. After finding costume materials in the thrift store(舊貨店)dumpsters, we stopped at a grocery store. There we found a dumpster half filled with potatoes and bread. We collected bags of potatoes to share with friends and to use for cooking with Food Not Bombs(a group that shares free vegetarian food and speaks against war and poverty). I was later told that using the dumpsters could earn me the title of an urban pirate(海盜)-what a great honour!
My first dumpster dive opened new doors for me. I had struggled with spending money. Now I think it will prove difficult to buy anything after seeing what people throw away. Something about all those wasted resources is not right. It seems we are constantly buying more and more and throwing away perfectly usable items, while many cannot meet their basic needs.
People who have never done their shopping in a dumpster believe it is dirty, dangerous, and humiliating. In reality, a diver with an old pair of jeans, a flashlight and a little common sense (wear boots and gloves to guard against sharp objects)should not have any trouble staying safe and can feel good about being a resourceful and responsible consumer. Dumpstering is a good way to save money, labour, and lessen our environmental impact.
From that dumpster tour, I had a new opinion on garbage. I found I can do something in this wasteful society. By living simply and taking what little I need from others’ unwanted goods, I am able to begin to break the habits of wastefulness. The influence of that first urban pirate adventure created a continuing impact on my life.
72. What is the attitude of the author to the title of an urban pirate?
A. Tolerant          B. Proud         C. Respectful        D. Humiliating
73. “My first dumpster dive opened new doors for me.” means          .
A. it has led to a better life for me and made me wealthier
B. it has made me buy nothing later and break the habits of wastefulness
C. it has changed my views and attitudes to consumers and living
D. it has brought me good senses to be a responsible and a resourceful consumer
74. The main idea of the third paragraph is             .
A. only the poor goes in for dumpstering
B. how to keep safe while dumpstering
C. the benefit and value of dumpstering
D. how to save money and lessen environmental impace
75. In the writer’s opinion,          .
A. there are many objects to be recycled in the dumpster
B. there are too many people looking down upon the divers
C. the little of an urban pirate is a prejudice
D. the influence of the first urban pirate adventure had an ill effect on his life

Medalists of the 1948 London Olympic Games look back on their summer of victory.
SAMMY Lee, 91, U.S.
GOLD AND BRONZE, DIVING
I first had my Olympic dream at 12, when they held the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. My father and I were at a grocery store, and I asked, “What are all the flags doing here?” He said, “We are having the Olympic Games. That’s where they honor the greatest athletes in the world.” I said, “Papa, someday I’m going to be an Olympic champ.”
Walking up the 10-meter platform, I thought to myself, “I’ve waited 16 years for this moment. Am I going to win?” So I prayed to God that I was most deserving of winning the Games.
DAVID BOND, 90, BRITAIN
GOLD, SAILING
During the war, I spent six years in Royal Air Force. I think in general, the 1948 Olympics meant very little to most people. We were too busy after the war to be worried about sport very much anyway.
Our team had about six weeks before the Olympics down at Torquay and we went out sailing every day.
Winning gold was quite something. It was nice to stand on the platform with lots of people cheering. We celebrated by going to a big dance.
MICHAEL LAPAGE, 88, BRITAIN
SILVER, ROWING
I started rowing when I was 14. I joined the navy in 1942. In 1945 the war came to an end and I started rowing again.
In 1948 we were still on rations (配給供應): 4 oz. of red meat a week. But the United States had all the meat they wanted. They were the favorites to win.
On the day of the final, we led the Americans at the start, but their stronger staying power took them through to win. There were no ribbons on the medals, so we just showed them round the family.
THOMAS GODWIN, 91, BRITAIN
BRONZE, CYCLING
At 14 I left school and got a job delivering groceries on a bicycle, which excited my interest in cycling. When the war broke out, I volunteered but was held back, so I continued riding.
After my team won our bronze medals, we went home just round the corner and had a sit-down and a chat and a laugh. It was a different world. Money was never, never thought about.
