There was a time when, if a lady got onto a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer her his seat. No more, though. Today, a gentleman will probably look out of the window, or, if he feels a bit guilty(內(nèi)疚), hides behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone else gets off.

You can't entirely blame(完全責備)men for this change in manners. The days are gone when women could be referred to as the weaker sex. A whole generation(代)of women has grown up demanding equality with men; not just equality in jobs or education, but in social attitudes(態(tài)度). Hold a door open for some women and you're likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors(能力低下的人), unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she'll probably insist on paying her share of the bill; though on second thoughts perhaps that's not such a bad idea.

It's no wonder, then, that men have given up some of the gestures of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, automatic male (men) politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings.

Maybe that's worth standing in the bus or train.

[ ]

A.women need true consideration of their needs and feelings

B.men have given up some politeness they used to show to women

If you have made an agreement to go out to eat with someone, you should be clear who is paying. If the other suggests you have lunch with him or her, you might simply say something like this:“I'm afraid it'll have to be some place inexpensive as I have very little money.”The other person may say,“OK, I'll meet you at McDonald's.”This means it is agreed that each person pays for his own meal, i. e. that you “go Dutch”. If the person says,“Oh, no. I'll take you to lunch in a little restaurant I like very much,”it means that the person wants to pay the bill for both of you. If you feel friendly towards this person, there's no reason why you should not accept this invitation by simply saying “Thank you. That would be very nice.”If a person invites you to his or her home for a meal, it's understood that person is paying. If you invite someone to your home, it's understood that you are buying the food. If you want to invite someone out for lunch, you must also make yourself clear by saying, perhaps,“I'd like to take you to lunch tomorrow at the Hostess Inn Coffee Shop”(meaning you plan to buy the food) or“l(fā)et's have lunch together tomorrow at Burger King. It's on me.”American women used to expect men to pay for all meals, but today most women will pay for themselves. However, you should always make your position clear. Being clear is the polite thing to do. It is lack of clarity (明了) that causes loss of face in this situation.

1.According to the passage, if someone asks you to go out to eat, ________.

[ ]

A.it shows he wants to pay for you

B.it doesn't necessarily meant that he wants to pay for you

C.you should ask him to go out to eat next time

D.you should refuse him if you don't like him

2.The underlined part“go Dutch”means ________.

[ ]

A.each paying for himself

B.buying the food at a store

C.paying for the two of you

D.going to some inexpensive place

3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.Men are expected to pay for women when they are eating out.

B.One should accept another person's invitation if he isn't one's good friend.

C.“It's on me.”means“I'll pay for the meal.”

D.If you are invited to someone's house for a meal, you should bring some gifts.

3.In order not to lose face, ________.

[ ]

A.one should try to pay for others

B.one should not eat out without carrying a lot of money

C.one shouldn't let a woman pay for him

D.one should make oneself clear and understood

It was fifteen past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she was going to work. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first Job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day.

Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked “Smith Enterprises”, she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no reply. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no answer. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in.

Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had the interview with Mr. Smith, it looked quite different now. In fart, it hardly looked like an office at all.

The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. In the front of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her.

Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. Smith, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. Smith arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.

1.Marie felt nervous when she knocked at the door became

[ ]

A.it was her first day in a new job

B.she was a little bit late for work

C.she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong place

A.they saw a stranger in the office

B.their morning break was ended

C.no one wanted to talk to Marie

C.were always punctual for work

D.lacked devotion to the company

閱讀理解

閱讀下面短文,從每題所給的四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone's satisfaction.

For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the colour you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is:“This is the right colour and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”

Now how does a woman go about buying clothes In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary(相反的) to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lockout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

1.What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?

[ ]

A.They welcome suggestions from anyone.

B.Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes.

C.Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought.

D.They listen to advice but never take it.

2.What does a man do when he can not get exactly what he wants?

[ ]

A.He buys a similar thing of the colour he wants.

B.He usually does not buy anything.

C.At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.

D.So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.

3.Many jokes make fun of women shoppers by saying that ________.

[ ]

A.they waste money on inferior(劣質(zhì)的) goods

B.they should buy only the best clothes

C.they are much more sensible than men

D.they think of the price of clothes and nothing else

4.What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?

[ ]

A.The fact that men do not try clothes on in a shop.

B.Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.

C.Women stand up to shop. but men sit down.

D.The time they take over buying clothes

One of Britain's most popular reality TV programmes has returned to our screens for a fifth series. The Apprentice sees 16 ambitious individuals competing for a job with electronics tycoon(巨頭)Sir Alan Sugar.

The Apprentice is a BAFTA award-winning British reality television series in which fl group of aspiring young businessmen and women compete for the chance to win a£100,000-a-year job as“apprentice”to the British business tycoon Alan Sugar, The Baron Sugar.Winners have gone on to work at Amstrad, an electronics manufacturing company founded by Sir Alan(but since sold to BSkyB), or one of Sugar's other companies, Viglen, Amsprop or Amshold. The Apprentice, billed as a“job interview from hell”, is similar in format to the American series of the same name, which stars entrepreneur Donald Trump.

閱讀下面短文,從題后所給的A、B、C、D四個答案中選出最佳選項。

All her life, my mother wanted busy children. It was very important that her house should remain at all times clean and tidy.

You could turn your back for a moment in my mother's house, leave a half-written letter on the dining room table, a magazine open on the chair, and turn around to find that my mother had "put it back where it belonged." as she explained.

My wife, on one of her first visits to my mother's house, placed a packet of biscuits on an end table and went to the kitchen to fetch a drink. When she returned, she found the packet had been removed. Confused, she set down her drink and went back to the kitchen for more biscuits, only to return to find that her drink had disappeared. Up to then she had guessed that everyone in my family held onto their drinks, so as not to make water rings on the end tables. Now she knows better.

These disappearances had a confusing effect on our family. We were all inclined to (有...的傾向) forgetfulness, and it was common for one of us, upon returning from the bathroom, to find the every sign of his work in progress had disappeared suddenly. "Do you remember what I was doing?" was a question frequently asked, but rarely answered.

Now my sister has developed a second-hand love of clean windows, and my brother does the cleaning in his house, perhaps to avoid having to be the one to lift his feet. I try not to think about it too much, but I have at this later time started to dust the furniture once a week.

56. Which of the following is TRUE about my mother?

A. She enjoyed removing other's drinks.

B. She became more and more forgetful.

C. She preferred to do everything by herself.

D. She wanted to keep her house in good order.

57. My wife could not find her biscuits and drink in my mother's house because _______.

A. she had already finished them                       B. my mother had taken them away

C. she forgot where she had left them             D. someone in my family was holding them

58. The underlined part to the fifth paragraph suggests that my sister _______.

A. is happy to clean windows                              B. loves to clean used windows

C. is fond of clean used windows                       D. likes clean windows as my mother did

59. This passage mainly tells us that _______.

A. my mother often made us confused

B. my family members had a poor memory

C. my mother helped us to form a good habit

D. my wife was surprised when she visited my mother
