[1] For more than 40 years, robots have worked in factories, doing jobs too boring or too dangerous for humans. Now, new robots are starting to help humans at home and at work.

[2] It was an exciting night at the Detroit Symphony.A special guest was joining the band. The conductor stepped out onto the stage and lifted both arms to direct the musicians. They played a song called "The Impossible Dream".The audience was amazed. After all, ASIMO, the conductor, is only eight years old and four feet tall. It's just one of many robots being developed to perform tasks that humans usually perform.

[3] Japan has more robots than any other country.Four Out of every 10 worker robots are there. The Japanese government is spending millions of dollars building even more robots. Why the rush for more electronic helpers? More than one fifth of Japan's population is 65 or older, so there are not enough young people in the workforce.

[4] Many of Japan's robots are designed to interact with people. One Japanese hospital has three shiny robots that help out in the waiting room. They greet patients and give directions."Robots won't ever be doctors," says hospital spokesperson Naoya Narita."But they can be guides."

[5] Since the 1960s, robots have been doing jobs that are too boring or too dangerous for humans. Some stand for long hours in factories, packaging food or putting together cars.Others milk cows on farms all day long. However, these industrial robots don't look like humans. Now that robots are moving into our homes, many are starting to look more like us.Trevor Blackwell's company, Anybots, makes robots. He built a dishwashing robot called Monty. It is as tall as a person and has humanlike hands,

[6] Will the robots of the future look more like machines or people? Either way, Blackwell is happy to let them do the chores."I'd rather have a robot do dishes," he says.Wouldn't you?

A poet is in his words

The writings of William Shakespeare are today little read by young people in Britian. His young readership is limited to those who choose to study literature at university.

Still, in British schools, ____________ to study the poet, and when something is made compulsory, usually the result is boredom, resentment or both. Shakespeare, Chareles Dickens, Jane Austen-for many of the young, reading them can seem like being forced to eat medicine, especially when people are at an age when they are beginning to discover themselves and wanting to claim their independence.

This was my experience of the classics at school. But when I reached my late teenage years, I had a change of heart. Like every other young person since the dawn of time, the world confused me. I wanted answers, so I turned to books to find them.

I went on to take a PhD in literature and have taught the subject in universities in Britain and China. I have never regretted it. There is something in literature that people want, even if they don’t read books.

You see this in the popularity of TV and movie adaptations of great works, the recent film version of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice being a case in point. These popular adaptations may help increase people’s interest in the classic.

Reading a simplified Romeo and Juliet may perhaps lead to a reading of Shakespeare’s actual play. If that is the case then I welcome the trend. But do not make the mistake of thinking that it is the same thing. Shakespeare is a poet and his greatness is in his language. Reading someone else’s rewriting of his work is like peeling (剝皮) a banana, throwing away the fruit, and eating the skin. Take on the original. It really is worth the effort.

閱讀表達(共5小題;每小題3分,滿分15分)

       閱讀下面的短文,并根據要求答題。(請注意問題后的字數要求)。

"Wow, you got an A without even studying."

"Your drawing is wonderful --you're my little Picasso."

If you're like most parents, you offer praise to your children believing it is the key to their success. But according to a new study, praise may do more harm than good.

For the study, after a simple IQ test, one group was told it did really well and must be very smart. The other group was told it did really well and must have worked hard. One group was praised for intelligence,                  .

Asked if they wanted to take a slightly harder test, the kids praised for their intelligence were unwillingly.Of those praised for their effort, however, 90 percent were eager for a more challenging task. And on a final test the effort group performed significantly better than the group praised for its intelligence.

Many of the kids who had been labeled "smart" performed worst of all.The "hard workers" got the message that they could improve their scores by trying harder, but the "smart" kids believed they should do well without any effort. Thus, kids who get too much praise are less likely to take risks, are highly sensitive to failure and are more likely to give up when faced with a challenge.

       Tips for Parents:

◆Avoid labels.Praising for effort sends the message that your child has the power to improve and change.Be mindful of labeling yourself and others.

◆Teach kids from an early age that the brain is a muscle that can be strengthened with practice. This sends the message that kids can directly affect their intelligence.

◆Parents often praise their kids to make themselves feel good, or to protect their kids from failure. But it's vital for parents to help their kids to learn to deal with setbacks and to help them focus on ways to improve.

1.What is the best title of the passage? ( Please answer within 10 words.)

2.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

As a result of much praise, kids will lack enough courage to risk and face failure and a challenge.

4.If your parents praise you too much, what should you do7 Why7 (Please answer within 30 words.)

閱讀下面短文, 請根據短文后的要求進行答題。(請注意問題后的字數要求)

[1] What does a successful language learner do? Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.

[2] First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher. Instead of waiting for teachers to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions.

[3] Secondly, successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language but     . They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things. They are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.

[4] Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language.

[5] What kind of language learners are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively and purposefully. On the other hand, if your language learning has been less than successful, you might do well to try some of the techniques above.
