Studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school. It doesn’t take much further thought to know that adults will feel better and do better at work as well. Whether you work at home, on the farm, at the office, at school, or on the road, it is not a good idea to have no breakfast.

If we have no breakfast, we are likely to become tired when our brains and bodies run low on fuel (食物). By mid-morning, a lot of us grab a cup of coffee or eat a sugary candy bar to wake up again. This might work for a few minutes, but by lunch time we are hungry. Eating a good breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day.

Having no breakfast is a popular way to lose weight, but not a smart one. Many people believe that they will lose weight if they have no meals, but that just isn’t true; the body expects to be refueled a few times a day, starting with a healthy breakfast. Eating breakfast is good for losing weight. In fact, people who eat breakfast are more likely to keep a healthy weight.

A healthy breakfast should have some protein (蛋白質) and some fiber (纖維). Protein can come from low fat meats, eggs, or beans. Fiber can be found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. A good example of a healthy breakfast might be something simple like a hard boiled egg, an orange, and a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk. Stay away from sugary foods and white bread because they are digested (消化) quickly and will leave you hungry and tired in several hours. Protein and fiber will keep you feeling full until lunch time.

Jim suffered heart problems. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was drawing to a close.

When his heart problems led to operation,Jim went through it successfully, and a full recovery was expected.Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly.Jim was rushed back to operation, but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before his 48th birthday.

Dr.Bruce Smoller,a psychologist(心理學家),had had many conversations with him,and the more he learned, the stranger he realized Jim’s case was. When Jim was a child, his father,a teacher, suffered a heart attack and stayed home to recover. One morning Jim asked his father to look over his homework, promising to come home from school at noon to pick it up.His father agreed, but when Jim returned his father had died.Jim’s father was 48.

“I think all his life Jim believed he killed his father,”Dr. Smoller says.“He felt that if he had not asked him to look at his homework, his father would have lived.Jim had been troubled by the idea. The operation was the trial(判決) he had expected for forty years.”Smoller believes that Jim willed himself not to live to the age of 48.

Jim’s case shows the powerful role that attitude(態度) plays in physical health, and that childhood experiences produce far-reaching effect on the health of grown-ups.Although most cases are less direct than Jim’s,studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart disease and mental illness.

A.Jim died at a young age.

B.Jim died on the operating table.

B.Smoller agreed that Jim did kill his father

C.Jim thought he would be punished some day

D.Smoller believed Jim wouldn’t live to the age of 48

Interpersonal Distance

With the outbreak of SARS,everyone tried to avoid coming into close contact with each other. In those days, interpersonal distance increased,“close contact” almost became synonymous with “danger”,and even children couldn’t have close contact with their mothers. Now SARS has disappeared, and we return back to normal living again. Then, how can we do handle interpersonal distance in our everyday lives?

Studies show that interpersonal distance can be divided into 4 different types:intimate distance, personal distance, social distance, and public distance.

Intimate distance is the interpersonal distance of a person with the people closest to him or her.It ranges from 0 to 45 cm.When a stranger comes within this distance,a person will have strong negative reaction. In crowded buses, strangers usually maintain rigid poses and try to avoid body contact, but couples, lovers, children and their mothers usually lean close to each other.Intimates who aren’t able to live close together for a long time can become alienated. Also, touching is also very important.A contrast test shows that the nervous systems of babies who are often caressed by their mothers develop much faster and their weight increases faster,by 47%,than that of other babies.

Personal distance ranges from 45 cm to 1 m.People can converse genially at this distance without invading each other’s personal space. When friends and acquaintances meet on the street, they usually greet and converse at this distance.

Social distance generally ranges from 1 m to 3 m.Among this range,1-2 m is usually the distance in which people deal with private affairs in social activities. For example, when you get money from banks,in order to protect your privacy, other customers are required to stand at least 1 m away from you.2-3.5 m is a farther social distance.Business talks usually occur at this distance.Besides talking, proper eye contact is also indispensable.Otherwise, each side will feel disrespected.

Public distance is usually used in public gatherings. It generally ranges from 3.5 m to about 7 m.Beyond this range, people can’t communicate using a normal voice. In classrooms, experienced teachers usually leave their lecture platforms to enhance their teaching.

Under different cultural contexts, the interpersonal distance differs slightly, but its basic laws are the same. When conversing, people in love lean very close to each other, acquaintances lean closer than strangers, females lean closer than males, and extraverts lean closer than introverts. In life, harmonious interpersonal relationships are set upon proper interpersonal distances, and some conflicts start from improper interpersonal distances.

According to the text, the strangers standing close to each other in a crowded bus may_________.

A.try to keep a distance away                                   B.feel uneasy

C.feel nervous                                                  D.be rude to each other

The distance between a teacher and students in class belongs to _________.

A.intimate distance                                           C.personal distance

C.social distance                                               D.public distance

The interpersonal distance between two people is mainly determined by _________.

A.how familiar they are with each other                    B.their relationship in a special activity

C.their characters                                             D.their cultural background

To keep proper interpersonal distance is important because _________.

A.it makes people feel respected or loved

B.it helps to protect privacy

C.wrong interpersonal distance may result in misunderstanding

D.improper interpersonal distance may hurt others

科目:高中英語 來源:20102012上海交通大學附屬中學高二第二學期期末英語試題 題型:閱讀理解

One often hears that children should arrive at school “ready to learn.” For most children, the acquisition of reading and math skills starts in the first grade. In states where kindergarten is compulsory, it begins even earlier.

Many parents, teachers, and politicians maintain that preschool is the best way to prepare children to learn. There is no real consensus, however, about how this preparation should be achieved.

For some, early childhood education relates to the development of the whole child. They think that preschool should encourage exploration and discovery. Group activities teach positive social behaviors such as sharing, kindness, and patience. Time spent alone encourages independence. Learning letters and counting is important only for children who show an interest in them. Advocates of this approach stress that each child is unique and should learn at his or her own pace.

Other people refer to research showing that children are ready to absorb basic academic concepts by age 3 or 4. They claim that early introduction to letters and numbers lays the foundation for later academic excellence. Since the 1980s, many people have stressed the value of preschool and point to the success of programs -such as Head Start - that target low-income children.

Is there proof that an academic curriculum in preschool will lead to academic success? Studies have not been conclusive. In the short term, evidence suggests that middle-class children who attend preschool are ahead of their peers in maths and language skills as well as in social skills, when they enter school. However, the same studies show that the gap narrows considerably by the time children reach age 8.

Children living in poverty are a different matter. Those enrolled in programs such as Head Start seem to do better than impoverished children who do not attend a preschool. For instance, youngsters in one group enrolled in the program, tracked until the age of 21, earned higher scores on intelligence tests, were more likely to graduate from high school, and demonstrated more interest in higher education.

The idea of public preschool raises many issues. Providing Head Start for all children would be a financial burden on communities that already struggle to fund current school programs. Also, where would a sufficient number of teachers trained in early childhood development be found?

1.

Advocates of the development of the whole child believe school readiness is______ .

A. showing eagerness in exploration and discovery

B. learning basic skills, such as knowing letters and counting

C. showing great interest in basic academic concepts

D. demonstration of intellectual , social and emotional skills

2.

According to the passage, Head Start is most probably______ .

A. a preschool program that supports disabled children

B. a program that helps impoverished children attend a school

C. an organization that aims to improve current school programs

D. a program that helps design the academic curriculum in preschool

3.

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Preschool benefits middle-class children more than poor children.

B. Most children start school with similar language and social skills.

C. Providing Head Start for all children has encountered great difficulties.

D. All children are ready to absorb basic academic concepts by age 3 or 4.

4.

Which of the following may best summarize the main idea of the passage?

A. An academic curriculum in preschool will lead to academic success.

B. Preshool is helpful, despite the disagreement about what it should offer.

C. Children enrolled in preschool demonstrate more interest in learning.

D. Preschool education shouldn't be a financial burden on communities.
