The way people hold to the belief that a fun - filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment (預擔的義務), self - improvement.

Ask a bachelor(單身漢) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three - day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because ________ .

  A. he is reluctant to take on family responsiblilities

  B. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single

  C. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage

  D. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement

Raising children, in the author’s opinion is ________ .

  A. a moral duty

  B. a thankless job

  C. a rewarding task

  D. a source of inevitable pain

From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from ________ .

  A. hatred B. misunderstanding

  C. prejudice D. ignorance

To understand what true happiness is one must ________ .

  A. have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime

  B. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain

  C. put up with pain under all circumstances

  D. be able to distinguish happiness from fun

【小題1】A

依據文章第3段第1行“Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment”(……

【小題3】依據文章最后一句“And it liberates us from envy:we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.”

【小題4】依據文章第1段第1句“The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness”(人們堅持充滿趣味、毫無痛苦的生活就等于幸福這一信條實際上減少了他們獲得真正幸福的可能性)。再依據文章最后一句“…all those who are always having so much fun actually may

  not be happy at all”(……

In November 1965, New York was blacked out by an electricity failure. The government officials promised that it would not happen again. Pessimists(悲觀者) were certain that it would occur again within five years at the lastest. In July 1977, there was a repeat performance which produced different degrees of disorder throughout the city of 8,000,000 people. In 1965, the failure occurred in the cool autumn and at a time of peace and good situation. In 1977, the failure was much more serious because it came when the number of people out of work was large and the city was suffering from one of its worst heat waves.

In 1965, there was little stealing during the darkness, and fewer than 100 people were caught by the police. In 1977, hundereds of stores were broken into and stolen. They broke shopwindows and helped themselves to jewellery, clothes or television sets, nearly 400 people were sent to the police but far more disappeared into the darkness of the night. The number of the policemen at hand was far from enough and they were wisely stopped from using their guns against the mobs(暴徒)that were far more than them and that included armed men.

Hospitals had to treat hundreds of people cut by glass from shop windows. Banks and most businesses remained closed the next day. The blackout started at 9:33 p. m. when lightning hit and knocked out vital cables(關鍵的電纜). Many stores were thus caught by surprise.

The vast majority of New Yorkers, however, tried to help strangers, handed out candles, and tried to get through the dark world without traffic lights, refrigerators, water and electrical power. For 24 hours, New York realized how helpless it was without electricity.

1.Look at the 1st paragraph, who were right, the government officials or the pessimists?

[ ]

A.The government officials.
B.Both.
C.The pessimists.
D.Neither.

2.In what way was the blackout of 1977 different from that of 1965?

[ ]

A.There was much more disorder.

B.This time the electricity supply failed.

C.It was quite unexpected.

D.It came in the cool autumn.

3.Why did many persons manage to escape the police?

[ ]

A.The police could not see them in the darkness.

B.Many of them carried guns.

C.There were not enough policemen to catch them all.

D.They were hidden inside big buildings.

4.The 1997 New York electricity failure lasted ________.

[ ]

A.a whole week
B.twenty-four hours
C.three days
D.a whole night

I knew they were out there somewhere, and I was determined to find them.

Like most tourists who visit Ranthambore National Park in India, I went with just one goal in mind:to see tigers in the wild.

Twice a day, all year round, 10 open-topped trucks are allowed to rumble along the park’s dirt roads for a few hours. It costs 360 rupees(about $8, U.S.)to buy a seat on one of the trucks.Glimpses of tigers are free.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed.Forty tigers wander Ranthambore’s 388 square miles. But tigers hear and smell us long before we can see them. Some tourists I met near the park were lucky enough to see a handful of tigers up close during just one trip.Other people saw none, even after going out six or more times.

Still, I couldn’t pass up(miss)the excursion(short journey). It was an opportunity that might someday disappear.Tigers are among the most endangered animals on Earth. In India, where about half of the planet’s remaining 7000 wild tigers live, tigers face a number of threats, especially from a growing human population.More than a billion people live in India today, and development is rapidly expanding into what was once largely tiger territory.

Conservationists nonetheless(in spite of that)remain optimistic.“The tiger will not disappear,”said P.K.Sen, director of the Tiger and Wildlife Program for World Wildlife Fund-India(WWF-India).He was kind enough to meet with me in his New Delhi office on a Sunday, the only day I spent in the city during a recent 3-week trip to India.

There’s no way, Sen said, that people will ever let the majestic cats die out.“The tiger has been a symbol of strength and might for thousands of years,”he said.

(4)

From this passage, we can infer ________.

[ ]

A.

development is rapidly expanding into what was once largely tiger territory, so some day the tigers will not find any place to live and disappear

B.

the Indian Government will take some measures to protect the tigers

C.

the tiger has been a symbol of strength and might for many years

D.

(5)

Which of the following statements is true?

[ ]

A.

During this trip to India, I stayed there for three weeks.

B.

I spent the only day I stayed in India to meet the director P.K.Sen.

C
A white-haired old gentleman steps out of his car, bag in hand and coat over his arm, he has called from the office to say that he is on the way. His wife is preparing supper. He can see the light shining inside his own front door. He looks forward to a fire and hot milk. It is a cold night. A few seconds later he is lying on the icy ground in a pool of his own blood.
It doesn't happen very often, but it does happen in the capital city of the United States. It is more likely to happen in the near-deserted city center at night. What happened to him could happen to any of us.
Senator Stennis, who is 71 , got out of his white Buick at 7:40 p.m. outside his home at 3609 Cumberland Street. Two youths said, "Get out! Money, please." He followed the order. He handed over his wallet containing several cards, a gold watch and the only money he had in his pockets—twenty-five cents. The youths also said, "Now we're going to shoot you anyway." Anyway they did. One bullet(子彈) hit him in the leg and struck the bone. The other entered his chest just below the upper pocket of his suit. It narrowly missed his heart.
Strangely he made it across a ten-meter distance, up eight steps and along twenty more feet of stone path. His wife met him at the door, and saw two men running. The senator told her to call the police and the doctor.
The senator is a powerful political figure, but it is unlikely that the two young men knew who he was. More likely the reason for the killing was that he had only no more than a quarter of dollar - not enough for two cups of coffee.
49 According to the passage,_______.
  A. such a mugging(行兇搶劫) might have happened to anyone
  B. the mugging happened on a cold evening in a senator's home
  C. the senator was killed because he was an important politician
  D. the mugging might not have happened if the senator was young and strong
50. Having robbed the senator, the two young men _______.
  A. pulled him into a pool B. shot two bullets into his body
  C. hit out at him hard D. carried him away
51. The two young men were angry by the fact that _______.
  A. the senator attempted to cheat them
  B. they failed to get the senator's expensive car
  C. the senator didn't die in their hands
  D. the mugging didn't bring them what they had expected
52 Which of the following statements is not true?
  A. A near-deserted city center at night is a dangerous place.
  B. People should always carry some money with them.
  C. Though seriously wounded, the senator managed to get home on his own.
  D. The senator's wife met the two men and recognized them.
