James Stallman Rockefeller, the oldest-known U.S. Olympic medal winner and the former head of the bank that became Citigroup, died Tuesday. He was 102. Records of the U.S. Olympic Committee show that Rockefeller was the oldest American medal winner. He was the captain of Yale University's eight-man rowing team with coxswain that won gold at the 1924 Paris Olympics - beating the Canadian team by less than 16 seconds. The oars from the winning race and the gold medal were prominently displayed in Rockefeller's house. "I think he was really proud of that - probably more than the bank career," said his grandson。

Rockefeller suffered a stroke on Thursday, said his grandson, who lived with him at his Greenwich home for two years, attributed his long life to a regimented(嚴密組織的) lifestyle: breakfast at eight a.m., lunch at 1 p.m., cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner promptly at 7 p.m.. He liked plain food, without sauces or cheese, and plenty of fresh vegetables, including those grown in the garden of his estate. Rockefeller was in good health until shortly before he died. He drove his car up until last year and would review documents from the various charities and businesses he helped lead.

Rockefeller, born June 8, 1902, was a grandson of William Rockefeller, who founded Standard Oil with his brother, John D. Rockefeller. He graduated from Yale in 1924 and served in the Airborne Command during World War II. He was became president in 1952, chairman in 1959 and retired in 1967. In 1955, under Rockefeller's leadership, the bank merged with the First National Bank of New York to form Citigroup. Rockefeller also was a director of numerous companies, including Pan American Airways, Northern Pacific Railroad, NCR and Monsanto, and served on the boards of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the American Museum of Natural History.

To son, Cecil,

Just a quick note before I start in earnest. When I wrote this, you were 8, still a little boy. In 2002, I was called to active duty in the Marine Corps in the war on Terrorism (恐怖主義). On the 11th of September 2001 when America was attacked, I knew that I would eventually have to go and I was filled with a deep sense of sadness. That night as you and Keiko were asleep, I looked at your little faces and couldn’t help but fight the tears. I knew it would be hard for you because I had a similar experience. When I was a little boy aged 6, my dad, your Grandpa Cawley, was sent to Vietnam during the war there. I remember how much I missed him, too. But now unfortunately I have come to realize just how rough it must have been for Grandpa to be away from his children for a year. Thinking about this, I wanted to put my thoughts and feelings down for you and your sister. I am so sorry that I had to leave for such a long time. There is no place I would rather be than with you and Keiko. You two are the lights of my life. I have known no greater joy than in the few years since you two were born. I hope to have many more years with you. If this doesn’t happen, then know that I love you more than words can express. If for some reason I don’t make it home, I will need you to take care of your little sister and your Mom. You will be the man of the Cawley family. Be good my son and God will watch over you as he has me. I will be waiting impatiently for the time when we can all be together again.

John Steinbeck once said, “All American believe they are born fishermen. For a man to admit to a distaste in fishing would be like speaking publicly against mother-love or hating moonlight”.

I can’t say I’m the biggest John Steinbeck fan. Actually, the only thing I can ever remember reading by him was “The Pearl” when I was in middle school, but I couldn’t agree more with the man when it comes to fishing. When I am on a boat in the middle of the lay Lake, fishing off the shores of the Florida Keys for tarpon or catching rainbow trout in the Shoshone River of Wyoming. Fishing is my life.

According to the American Sports Fishing Association, the fishing industry brings in more than $ 116 billion per year from fishermen across the country.

Though a beautiful picture to imagine, fishing is much more than that. Fishing is a way of life from many people and a way to escape everyday stress. Being a fisherman makes me a member of a wonderful group of people extending to all walks of life. Even President Bush can be found fishing on his farm in Texas with his good friend Roland Martin when the jobs gets too stressful.

I can remember fishing with my grandfather when I was 5 years old on his boat at Lake Michel. Although I didn’t understand what I was doing, I did know that my grandfather was happy and that made me happy. Since then I’ve spent the past 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama.

After days of practice, before and after work, I slowly developed an understanding of fishing. My boss, Ric Horst, took me back to the Shoshone, and I managed to bring in a 19-inch cutthroat trout. Fishing with Ric was a life-changing experience for me. He not only showed me how to fish correctly, but also told me how fishing could be a way to escape your problems.

Since then, prime-time season seems to take forever to arrive.

Now, with the ending of February and beginning of March is sight, the excitement of heading out to Lake Tus caloosa or Lake Lurleen before classes and catching something has finally returned.

What John Steinbeck said in the first paragraph implies that ______

A.American are believed to be the offspring of fishermen.

B.it is unthinkable for an American to admit his dislike of fishing.

C.all American are expert at fishing.

D.those who dislike fishing would not love their mother.

The writer came to understand the real meaning of fishing ______.

A.when he was reading “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck

B.when he went fishing with his grandfather at Lake Mitchell

C.after he had spent 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama

D.after he went fishing with his boss, Ric Horst on the Shoshone

According to the author, ______.

A.people can get to know VIPs when fishing

B.people can smooth away all the troubles by fishing

C.fishing is a way of communication

D.fishing is a way of life for most American people

What is the purpose of the writing?

A.To describe the writer’s experience and understanding of fishing.

B.To explain the reason why so many Americans like fishing.

C.To make others understand the industry of fishing.

D.To express his opinions about fishing in different time of the year.

 根據短文內容,從短文后的選項中,選出能填入空白處的最佳選項,選項中有兩項為多余選項。

Is the customer always right?  1.  Shopping is very much a part of a country’s culture, and

attitudes to shopping and consumers vary from country to country just as much as climate or taste

in food.

Recent economic hardship has given the consumers increased power in Europe because shopkeepers fight to win their share of reduced disposable(可支配的)income. This has meant failing prices, plenty of special offers and a re-examination of what customer service really means. 2. In restaurants in the south of the USA,for example, waiters compliment.(恭維)you on your clothes, ask about your day, compliment you on your wisdom of your order and then return every ten minutes to refill your glass and make sure that everything is to your satisfaction.

Anyone who has waited 30 minutes to be served in fl restaurant may possibly dream of such customer service. 3. a fact, different nationalities expect different types of service. As a friend of mine once told me,"By the end of evening I had spent as much time talking to the waiter as to my wife."

A Chinese-American friend loves telling people about how her Chinese mother shops for clothes.First of all she waits until they are on sale. 4.And later she finds some small fault with the product and demands a further reduction. She never buys anything at the regular price.Could you imagine trying such ways in department stores in other countries?

Attitudes to service are,of course, affected by employers’ attitudes to their workers. As American waiters heavily depend on tips, they have to provide more service. But is this fair? 5. It might not be a case of"Is the customer always right ?"but a case of” How much service is it fair to expect?"

A.People often point to America as an example of good customer service.

B.It is a question of expectations.

C.Do we think it is fair to ask shop assistants to work late evenings or on Sundays?

D.Then she asks for a discount until she gets an even better price.

E.The answer,it seems, depends on which country you are in.

F.The way we shop shows the way we get along with other people.

G.However,do Europeans really want US style service?

科目:高中英語 來源:2010年三峽三中高一下學期期末考試英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

Today only one person in five in the United States lives within 50 miles of his birthplace. Since the country was first settled, Americans have moved around a great deal, and are often far away from their parents. Because they have broken ties with their past at a young age, chosen their own occupations, established their own homes and developed their own lifestyles, few American children grow up closely surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins as they do in Italy, Nigeria, or India, for example. This along with the fact that modern American families do not have servants has made the “baby-sitter” a vital part of the American scene. A “sitter” is someone who is hired to care for children for a specific length of time—usually relatively short—while the parents are out for an evening, going to a party or a course of study for example. Sometimes the baby-sitter is also hired for longer period, perhaps when the parents are away for a weekend. In such cases the “sitter” is likely to be a mature and motherly woman. For short periods, teen-agers, college students, nursing students, and others are commonly employed on an hourly basis.

From the point of view of convenience, the best sitters are often young people who live in your apartment building or close by in the neighborhood. This gives you a chance to meet the parents and see what they are like. If an emergency occurs, young sitters can call upon their parents quickly for help; you do not have to take them far to see them home at night or pay expensive taxi fares. Another advantage is that young people living close by can usually fill in quite readily on short notice or for short periods of time.

In an apartment house you can ask the superintendent for permission to post a notice for a baby-sitter by the mailboxes. This is often the best way to find out if there is anyone in the building who is interested in baby-sitting. Retired people as well as students are often glad to earn a little money in this way and can be found by such a note.

1.A baby-sitter is a person who________.

A.helps to do housework

B.is a cleaning woman

C.looks after children while their parents are out

D.takes care of babies and cooks for the family

2.It is advised that when you are out for short periods, you may hire________ to be baby-sitters.

A.motherly women

B.retired people

C.young people

D.mature women

3.The best title for the passage is________.

A.American Families

B.Baby-Sitters

C.A Way of Earning Money for Young Students

D.A Best Way to Find Baby-Sitters
