In the 1930s, a lot of people in the USA were out of work. Among these people was a man named Alfred Butts, he always had an interest in word games and so, to fill his time, he planned a game which he called “Lexico”. However, he was not completely satisfied with the game, so he made a number of changes to it and, in time, changed its name from “Lexico” to “Alph” and then to “Criss Cross”. He wanted to make some money from his new game but he didn't have any real commercial(商業的) success.

In 1939, Butts happened to meet a man called Jim Brunot who showed an interest in the new game. The two men worked together on developing the game and in 1948 it was offered for sale in the United States under its new name—“Scrabble”.

At first, it didn’t sell very well. In the first year it sold just 2 250 sets and by 1951 it had only reached 8 500 sets a year.

Then, in 1952 the manager of Macy's department store in New York, Jack Strauss, happened to play “Scrabble” while he was on holiday. He thought it was a wonderful game and, when he went back to work after his holiday, he insisted that Macy's should stock(儲備)the game and make an effort to call the public's attention to it.

As a result, “Scrabble” became a big success in the United States and it soon spread to Australia and then to other English-speaking countries.

Compared to people with bad attitudes, people who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study.“It’s possible that being upbeat helps the body fight illnesses,” says Sheldon Cohen, the study’s lead researcher from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh.
In a previous(先前的) study,Cohen and his colleagues put coldcausing viruses into the noses of 334 healthy adults. People who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop sniffles, coughs, and other cold symptoms. People who showed positive feelings were also less likely to mention symptoms to their doctors, even when medical tests detected those symptoms.
Those findings were interesting, but they didn’t prove that a person’s attitude affects whether he or she gets sick. Instead,it was still possible that a person’s underlying personality is what matters. Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic, with high selfesteem and a sense of control over life. This would mean that who we are,not how we feel, ultimately decides our chances of catching colds.
To figure out which mattered more (personality or emotions),the CMU team interviewed 193 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. At the end of the interviewing period, people got nose drops that contained either cold or flu viruses. Then, each person stayed in an isolated room for 5 or 6 days. The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks. Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus, for example,28 percent developed coughs and stuffy noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less upbeat.

Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting ill, new study findings suggest.
In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill. The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help to protect us from suffering the common cold and other illnesses.
Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective — as in happiness improving immune function — and subjective — as in happy people being less troubled by a sore throat or runny nose. “People with a positive emotional style may have different immune responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “And when they do get a cold, they may interpret their illness as being less severe.”
Cohen and his colleagues had found in a previous study that happier people seemed less likely to catch a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional style itself had the effect.
For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults complete standard measures of personality characteristics, self-felt health and emotional style. Those who had a tendency to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense and aggressive had a negative style.
The researchers gave them nasal (鼻腔的) drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus. Over the next six days, the volunteers reported on any aches, pains or sneezing they had, while the researchers collected objective data. Cohen and his colleagues found that based on objective measures of nasal troubles, happy people were less likely to develop a cold.
【小題1】Which is the best title for the passage? ______

A.Stay Away from Being Negative
B.Positive or Negative? It’s Up to You.
C.Emotional Style and Flu.

【小題2】 According to Dr Cohen’s research, the reason why some people are unlikely to catch a cold may be that ______.
A.their cheerful mood benefits the immune system
B.they have developed a certain way against flu virus
C.they are less likely to have a sore throat and runny nose
D.they have got a stronger self-confidence in their health
【小題3】 The research is done by ______.
A.getting volunteers in one emotional group and analyzing them
B.conducting a medical experiment on volunteers of different emotional styles
C.collecting and analyzing volunteers’ objective nasal production data
D.having volunteers answer questions on personality, health and emotions

CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS PROPOSAL.

FROM THE DESK OF: MR. JOSEPH YANA.

AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK (ADB)

BURKINA-FASO.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am the Bill and Exchange (assistant) Manager of the African Development Bank, MR. JOSEPH YANA.

In my department I discovered an abandoned sum of USD$9.900.000 in an account that belongs to one of our foreign customers who died along with his wife and two children in July 2002 in a plane crash. Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin(近親屬) to come over and claim his money, but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin or relation died alongside with him in the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim.

It is therefore upon this discovery that I in my department now decided to make this business proposal to you and release the money to you as next of kin or relation since nobody is coming for it and we don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed fund. The banking law and guidelines here says that if such money remains unclaimed after ten years, the money will be transferred into the bank treasury as unclaimed fund.

The request of the foreigner in this transaction(辦理) is necessary because our late customer was a foreigner. We agree that 30% of this money will be for you as foreigner partner, 5% will be set aside for expenses incurred during the business and 65% would be for me, after which I shall visit your country for disbursement(開支) according to the percentages indicated. Therefore to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you as arranged, you must apply first to the bank, and send your account number, your private telephone and fax number for easy and effective communication and location where the money will be sent.

Upon receiving your reply, I will send to you by fax or e-mail the text of the application which you shall retype and fax to us. Trusting to receive your urgent reply through my alternative Email : jyana96 @ yahoo.com.id

    Best regards.

    MR. JOSEPH YANA.
