Outside our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a seemingly ancient woman waited beside the door with her hand outstretched. Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met. She never failed to return my smile, my grasp, and my greeting.

On the last day of our visit, I found myself alone on a busy corner across the street from our hotel. Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me. As I hesitated on the sidewalk, I felt a hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my small beggar friend looking up at me. She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across. Together, we moved slowly into the chaos.

Then we moved on toward the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then left, still smiling and waving back to me.

Traveling in poorer nations, I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance. A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry, hoping that other ragged pursuers won’t immediately appear on the scene.

For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect. Everyone needs recognition, to be seen as worthy of being known, to feel appreciated and loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.

1.The woman beggars helped the author go across the busy street because __________.

A.the author gave her material assistance

B.the author treated her kindly and friendly

C.the author would help her as a reward

D.the author was a foreigner

2.From the story, what position of the beggars in the author’s mind might be?

    A.equal                B.superior      C.lower          D.valuable

3.In common cases, people will do the following things to the beggars EXCEPT for ________.

    A.pretending to see nothing

B.handing out some money

    C.refusing them angrily

D.greeting them normally

4.According to the author, the most important things beggars really need are _________.

A.mercy and pity B.money and food

C.smile and greeting  D.attention and respect

5.The purpose of the passage is to _________.

A.show how poor the beggars are in Vietnam

B.offer some advice on dealing with begging

C.express what we should offer the beggars

D.describe an experience with a beggar

【答案】

1.B

2.A

3.D

4.D

5.C

【解析】

1.細節理解題。結合文章中的Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met(。每天,當我和她目光交匯時,我都會把我的手放在她的手里。)和Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect…(他們所能給予的最好禮物是他們的時間與友情。每個人都需要認同,需要關注,需要感激和關愛。)可知作者并沒有給woman beggars錢或其它東西,而是認同和關愛。

2.推理判斷題。結合文章最后一句I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing(我堅信每個人都是有價值的――值得你去了解)可知在作者心目中所有的人都是平等的。

3.細節理解題。結合The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance. A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry(面對窮人最常見的回應是不理睬,還有轉移注意力。我曾看見有人非常惱火地把他們的伸出來的手推開。還有一些人急匆匆地把幾個硬幣丟在他們乞求的手掌里)可知D項不合題意。

4.細節理解題。結合Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect可知答案。

5.寫作目的題。作者結合自己的一次經歷告訴人們:對于乞丐來說,給他們錢并不是最好的回應。他們也需要認同,需要關注,需要感激和關愛。

Two University of Oklahoma scientists are starting research that they hope will someday lead to the development of a vaccine(疫苗)to fight against the HIV Virus, which causes AIDS.

The research, to be carried out by Mark Lang, an assistant professor at the OU Health Sciences Center, and microbiologist John West, will examine the basic aspects of the immune system, rather than the complex aspects of the virus.

They theorize that if a key function of the body's immune system can be found exactly, it could be the first step toward developing a vaccine.

“To develop a new vaccine, we realzed we first have to study and understand the immune system,”Lang said.

Lang said their work will focus on researching the basic antibody responses from Natural Killer-like T-cells.A potential vaccine would contain NKT cells and would improve the immune system's antibodies, which fight outside invaders such as HIV by preventing them from entering cells or giving the immune system enough of a boost to kill them.

NKT cells, which have been a part of research into cancer and other diseases, have not previously been the focus of HIV research, Lang said.

The research will last 18 months, with tests being performed on mice. The Oklahoma Center is giving $300,000 toward the research, and if the research proves promising, Lang and West will apply to the National Institutes of Health for more funding.

“If we are successful, we will have made an important contribution to the field, but we will still be several steps away from an effective vaccine,”Lang said.

Lang said that in a best –case scenario(最好的情況)their research could lead to a vaccine ready for use in about four years.

閱讀理解。
In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a "gap  year," a year off between high
school and college. This idea never gained a big following in America. Recent news reports have
suggested that interest may be growing, though there are no official numbers.
Charles Deacon, Dean of Admissions at Georgetown  University in Washington, D.C., estimates that
in the current first-year class of 1,600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off. He says this
number hasn't changed much over the years.
Mr. Deacon says the most common reason for taking a "gap year" is to have a chance to travel, but
he says international students may take a "gap year" to meet requirements at home for military duty.
Some high school graduates see a year off as a chance to recover after twelve years of required
education, but it can also give students a chance to explore their interests. Students hoping to be doctors,
for example, could learn about the profession by volunteering  in a hospital.
Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their
admission. Experts say students can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they
enjoy.
The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its Web site called "Time Out or Burn Ou >t for the
Next   Generation." It praises the idea of taking time off to step back, think and enjoy gaining life
experiences outside the pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to
Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time.
Of course, a gap year is not for everyone. Students might miss their friends who go on directly to
college, and parents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time
off. Another concern is money. A year off, away from home, can be costly.
Holly Bull's job is to specialize in helping students plan their gap year. She notes that several books
have been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability
of information on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off, and she points out that
many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.
1. What is the passage mainly about?
A. If you want to go to an American university, take a gap year first.
B. More and more American students are choosing to take a year off.
C. It is likely that taking a "gap year" is becoming popular in America.
D. Americans hold different opinions towards students' taking a "gap year".
2. How many reasons for students' taking a "gap year" are mentioned in the    passage?
A. 2.
B. 3.
C. 4.
D. 5.
3. The essay "Time Out or Burn Out for the Next Generation." suggests that ______.
A. every student must take a "gap year" before applying for a famous university
B. some famous universities encourage students to gain more life experiences
C. taking a 'gap year' can make students free from life learning
D. the stress of studies does harm to the students' health
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Charles Deacon doesn't support the idea of the students' taking a "gap year".
B. Books and media have contributed to the students' interest in school learning.
C. Parents might disagree with the program, concerned about their children's future.
D. Experts agree taking a year off will benefit the students emotionally and physically.
