When a baby sees a ball, the baby may reach out for it. If the baby is very young, and you __21____the ball behind a pillow (枕頭), then the ball ______22 exists for the child. As the child grows older, the child will move the pillow to get the ball. Even though the child cannot see the ball, the ball still exists. This is an early example of “learning to see the __23____”.

Just about all of us have __24____, so we all think we can see. But, in __25____ we are all blind to probably 99% of the world. Because___26____ people realize this, few people make the attempt to learn more, in order to see more. Just like a child, what we don’t see doesn’t exist.

__27_____, because most of us are blind to 99% of the world, we rely on others to give us the answers. We willingly allow doctors, lawyers, priests, and politicians to tell us what to do or think, but they take no responsibility when the results go wrong. Commercial television, radio, newspapers, and magazines are largely corporate owned, profit driven, and focus more on distraction and misinformation than on education. Yet, we continue reading, watching and listening to commercial media under the illusion that we are learning. Corporate (法人的) media is education with blinders. They only show you the __28____ picture, and, in this way, they control public opinion. __29___ needs to turn to noncommercial television, radio, and Internet world news to get the big picture. Everyone needs to know more in order to __30___ the political spin and lies.

Corporate (法人的) media is education with blinders.。

Education is learning to see the invisible.

24.眼睛才能“see”。

25. 因in reality意思是“實際上,事實上”。in return是“作為回報”,in short是“簡言之”,in case是“以防萬一”。根據上下文,選B。

26.根據后句的排比,邏輯上應該選B。

27. most of us are blind to 99% of the world是一件不幸的事。

28.根據Corporate (法人的) media is education with blinders. They only …和and Internet world news to get the big picture.的對應關系,應該選little。

29.下一句的排比可以幫助我們作出判斷。

30.因see through是“看清,了解”,因為作者建議我們turn to noncommercial media for more information。

Honestly, since my son was born, I have thought a lot about how to raise a child. I once heard a story that told about when a baby was born. The story said that when a baby was born, a new master was born. The parents of that baby would become the servants. The question is: Why? Based on my observation, this phenomenon is true. Most parents who don't pay much attention to their kids have difficulties with their kids' attitude.

I'll make a comparison of how two families raise their children. The first one is a family with three children. Both mother and father never say "No" to their children's demands. As a result, all of their children became stubborn and won't listen to their parents’ words, "We can't."

The second family educated their children strictly from one year old to high school. The parents never approved or agreed directly to give their children what they wanted. They always postponed one or two days, even if they could afford it. Due to the way their parents educated them, these children understood that if they wanted something, they had to wait or they had to make an effort first. As a result, all the kids from the second family successfully graduated from university on time.

In my opinion, if we want to be successful parents and raise our children well, we have to start disciplining them when they are toddlers but not wait until they become teenagers.

Why did the writer give two different stories in this passage?

  A. To help prove his opinion about raising a child.

  B. To list different ways that parents may take.

  C. To criticize some parents’ foolish action.

  D. To prove that his way of education is right.

What does the underlined word “postponed” in the third paragraph mean?

  A. Carried out at once.                 B. Gave up.

  C. Put off.                         D. Made a decision.

In the writer’s opinion, which of the following about raising a child is TRUE?

  A. Children should be respected once they were born.

  B. Parents should educate their children as early as possible.

  C. It is right time to educate their children when they are teenagers.

  D. Children should be helped whenever they make mistakes.

What do you think is the best title of this passage?

  A. Make a comparison of how two families raise their children

  B. To be successful parents

  C. How to raise children well

  D. Educate children strictly from one year old to high school

The flying fox is not a fox at all. It is an extra large bat that has got a fox’s head, and that feeds on fruit. Like all bats, flying foxes hang themselves by their toes (趾) when at rest, and travel in great crowds when out flying. A group will live in one place for years. Sometimes several hundreds of them occupy a single tree. As they return to the tree towards sunrise, they quarrel among themselves and fight for the best places until long after daylight.
Flying foxes have babies once a year, giving birth to only one at a time. At first the mother has to carry the baby on her chest wherever she goes. Later she leaves it hanging up, and brings back food for it to eat. Sometimes a baby bat falls to the ground. Then the older ones fly down and try to pick it up. If they fail to do so, it will die. Often hundreds of baby bats can be found lying on the ground at the foot of the tree.

Health experts have long worried about the increasing rate of obesity in kids. It’s an important concern: Being very overweight or obese during childhood can lead to serious problems normally seen in adults, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Poor diets and a lack of exercise are usually the causes. But would you ever have imagined there might be a connection between the bacteria that lived in your guts (內臟)when you were a baby and the chance that you would become overweight?
Scientists in Finland recently found just such a link. In a recent study, they showed that overweight kids had different species of bacteria living in their guts.
You probably think of bacteria only as germs that can make you sick. While it’s true that some bacteria can make people ill, your body actually depends on some types of bacteria to help you digest food and extract nutrients from it. These “good” bacteria live in your guts, where they process the food you eat.
Human babies get these bacterial helpers from their moms. When a baby is born, some of the bacteria in the mother move into the baby’s body. Growing babies get additional “good” bacteria from the milk their mothers produce. And it turns out the bacteria might play an important role in regulating weight just six years later.
So how could these bacteria affect weight? The researchers still haven’t tested that question, but future tests might lead to an answer.
【小題1】The “link” in Paragraph 2 refers to the relationship between _______.

A.bacteria and the chance of being overweightB.obesity and diabetes
C.diets and the chance of being overweightD.bacteria and exercise
【小題2】Which of the following is NOT the function of “good” bacteria?
A.Helping to digest food.B.Helping to take nutrients from food.
C.Helping to regulate weight.D.Making a person ill.
【小題3】The purpose of writing this passage is to _______.
A.introduce the role of bacteria in children’s weight
B.analyze the influence of obesity on kids
C.give advice on how to lose weight quickly
D.explain the function of bacteria in foods

根據短文內容,從A到F選項中選出能概括每一段主題的最佳選項。選項中有一項為多余項。
A. A sense of humor is not an inborn ability.
B. A sense of humor can be developed in our life.
C. A sense of humor helps us from several aspects(方面).
D. A sense of humor means more than telling jokes.
E. A sense of humor can be expressed in many ways.
F. A sense of humor helps people to better enjoy life.
【小題1】_____ As awareness of the benefits of humor increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can. It seems that almost every day there is another new discovery about the power of humor to help us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Every system of the body responds to laughter in some important or positive way.
【小題2】_____ Many people mistakenly believe that we are born with a sense of humor. They think that when it comes to a sense of humor, “either you’ve got it or you don’t.” This is false. What is true, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we are born with. For example, we laugh when we are tickled under the arm, even without thinking about how to react.
【小題3】_____ The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth in human infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humor. (After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don’t rush over and say, “That kid has a great sense of humor.”) Your sense of humor is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don’t be nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself—then you will make them laugh too.
【小題4】_____ Humor includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense of humor because they are not good joke tellers. More than jokes, a sense of humor requires being willing and able to see the funny side of life’s situations as they happen. In fact, one of the best definition of a sense of humor is “the ability to see the nonserious element in a situation”.
【小題5】_____ There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humor, but joke telling is only one of those ways. As more is discovered about how humor benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humor when they are in a difficult situation. Life depends on air, food and water, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humor.

The time of year a baby is born can shape what profession they will embark on (從事) in later life, a new study has suggested. Being born in a certain month appears to indicate the statistical likelihood of what job a person will end up with, the study by the Office for National Statistics found. Researchers have uncovered that the month in which babies are born could also affect everything from intelligence to length of life.

A child born December is more likely to become a dentist while someone whose birthday falls in January will tend to a debt collector, they found. A February birth appears to increase the chances of being an artist while March babies appear to go on to become pilots. Meanwhile, April and May are said to have a fairly even spread of professions, births in the summer months mean a much lower chance of becoming a high-earning football player, doctor or dentist.

The study was derived (推導出) by researchers who analyzed the birth months of people in 19 separate occupations using information from the last census, the Daily Mail reported. Although these trends may be difficult to explain, correlations (關聯) between birth months and specific health problems have a scientific basis. Spring babies are at greater risks of illnesses including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma and autism. They may also be less clever than classmates born in other parts of the year.

1.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.The year when a baby is born may not be associated with the job he or she will end up with.

B.Researchers have found the birth month could affect both intelligence and length of life.

C.The birth time can give signs of future development of what professions people will start.

D.The study indicates there are correlations between birth months and some terrible risks.

2.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.A child born in December is more likely to become an artist while someone born in January will tend to be a dentist.

B.A February birth appears to have the possibilities of being an artist while March babies appear to become pilots.

C.Children born in April and May are said to have equally balanced chances in their future professions.

D.Births in the summer months mean they have few chances to earn a lot of money as a football player, doctor or dentist.

3.What do the researchers also study besides the analyses of the trends between birth months and professions?

A.Some serious diseases from births of many children.

B.A lot of mental illnesses caused by giving birth to children.

C.The secret of births and healthy problems.

D.The relationship between birth months and certain health problems.
