"I'd be better off dead." he said, without any hesitation. Hearing those words come out of my best
friend's mouth tore my heart apart. He has repeated that phrase more than once, and my mind
continually plays it over like a voice recording.
I met him about three years ago. After knowing me for six months, he told me about his struggles
with depression. Sadness was not the only feeling that came over me; I was shocked. He seemed so
outgoing and happy all the time. I soon learned that he was hurt physically and mentally as a young child,
causing him to have the thought of killing himself.
He refuses to talk to others about his depression because he now distrusts adults, especially those in
his family. However, he feels as if I understand him and that I know the right words to speak. Therefore,
when it comes to helping him, convenience is not in my vocabulary. It does not matter where I am or
what I am doing, for he always comes first.
Many students at his school laugh at him when they notice scars on his arms from cutting. As he sees
it, other kids have every right to make fun of him. But no one holds such a right, so I encourage him to
ignore the heartless kids who treat him badly. When he feels the weight of judging eyes or hateful voices,
I always remind him that I care about him unconditionally. Just hearing me say I will always be his best
friend seems to give him the safety he needs to keep on going.
My best friend once told me that if he had not had me, he would not be alive. He said that my
encouraging words helped him not to take his life. Our friendship has taught me that a single kind word
can influence someone’s life. Life is not easy for every one, which makes me strongly believe in the
necessity of encouragement.
1. According to the first paragraph, hearing his friend's words, the author felt______.
A. puzzled
B. painful
C. frightened
D. hopeless
2. By saying "convenience is not in my vocabulary", the author means ______.
A. he is always ready to help his friend
B. he hardly spares time to help his friend
C. he has no good excuse for refusing his friend
D. he is not good at communicating with his friend
3. The author's friend got into depression mainly because __________.
A. he lived without his parents
B. he had poor health
C. he received little care at school
D. he had a terrible childhood
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. I enjoy friendship
B. My friend and I
C. I believe in encouragement
D. The story of my friend

“I THIRST”

Each day water-related diseases kill 3 900 of the world's children

Across the world, 1.1 billion people have no access to clean drinking water. More than 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation(衛生設備) .

The combination proves deadly. Each year, diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation kill between 2 and 5 million people and cause an estimated 80 percent of all sicknesses in the developing world. Safe drinking water is a precondition for health and the fight against child death rate, inequality between men and women, and poverty.

  Consider these facts:

●The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 6 kilometers.

●Only 58 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are drinking safe water, and only 37 percent of children in South Asia have access to even a basic toilet.

●Each year in India alone, 73 million working days are lost to water-borne diseases.

Here are three ways you can help:

  1) Write Congress

Current U.S. foreign aid for drinking water and sanitation budgets only one dollar per year per American citizen. Few members of Congress have ever received a letter from voters about clean drinking water abroad.

  2) Sponsor a project with a faith-based organization

Many U.S. religious groups already sponsor water and sanitation projects, working with partner organizations abroad. Simply put, a single project by a U. S. organization can make safe water a reality for thousands of people.

  3) Support nonprofit water organizations

Numerous U.S. -based nonprofits work skillfully abroad in community-led projects related to drinking water and sanitation. Like the sample of nonprofits noted as follows, some organizations are large, others small-scale; some operate worldwide, others are devoted to certain areas in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Support them generously.

1.The three facts presented in the passage are used to illustrate that ________ .

[ ]

A.poverty can result in water-borne diseases

B.people have no access to clean drinking water

C.women's rights are denied in some developing countries

D.safe drinking water should be a primary concern

2.The intended readers of the passage are ________ .

[ ]

A.Americans

B.overseas sponsors

C.Congressmen

D.U . S. -based water organizations

3.The main purpose of the passage is to call on people to ________ .

[ ]

A.get rid of water-related diseases in developing countries

B.donate money to people short of water through religious groups

C.fight against the worldwide water shortage and sanitation problem

D.take joint action in support of some nonprofit water organizations

4.What information will probably be provided following the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.A variety of companies and their worldwide operation.

B.A list of nonprofit water organizations to make contact with.

C.Some ways to get financial aids from U.S. Congress.

D.A few water resources exploited by some world-famous organizations.

閱讀理解.
I spent three months volunteering with Volunteer Bolivia(玻利維亞). It was sometimes
annoying, scary and difficult, but also life-changing, satisfying and amazing. Because I had
studied Spanish for a couple of years before I went out, I had just one week of classes at
Volunteer Bolivia.
Living with a family also helped my Spanish greatly and I felt immediately like one of their
daughters. We were good friends from the beginning of my time there and I was looked after
very well. I still had a lot of independence. The Volunteer Bolivia centre, with its cafe bar and
cultural talks, was a meeting place for all the volunteers and I met some wonderful people
from all over the world who were doing the same as me------giving something of themselves
to a country which needs so much.
My job was in a caring centre for prisoners' children from the Cochabamba prisons and
from the very (恰好的)start I felt welcomed and needed. There I met some inspiring members
who put so much of their heart into caring for those children who maybe had no one else to
love them. Not only the work itself was very hard but at times it was emotionally demanding,
especially sending a group of two year olds back into the prison at the end of the day. Despite
all this, I learnt a lot through the experience and now I'm more aware of the problems faced
daily by many people in South America. The centre has very limited funding (資金)so they
depend heavily on the work of volunteers, and any time people give is very valuable to them.
Since returning to Britain I have kept in touch with the people I worked with and I'm trying
to support them as much as possible. Volunteering through Volunteer Bolivia has changed my
life and is an experience I will never forget.
1. We can infer that the official language of Bolivia is most probably _____ .
A. English
B. Spanish
C. French
D. Italian
2. Where did the author stay when she was in Bolivia?_____
A. In a hotel.
B. In the volunteer centre.
C. In a cafe bar.
D. In a local family.
3. The author's job as a volunteer in Bolivia was to ._____
A. raise money for some prisons
B. meet volunteers from other countries
C. look after some prisoners' children
D. help the local people with their farm work
4. What did the author think of her work in Bolivia according to Paragraph 3?______
A. Challenging.
B. Relaxing.
C. Disappointing.
D. Boring.
5. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?______
A. An unforgettable experience.
B. Volunteering through Volunteer Bolivia
C. My job in a caring centre.
D. Living with a family in Bolivia

I love charity(慈善)  shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of
them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from
clothes to electric goods , all  at very good  prices. You  can  get things you won't find in the shops any
more. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the
pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet , but finding a new home for
unwanted goods.
The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity's appeal to aid postwar
Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations (捐贈物). They decided to set up
a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7, 000 charity
shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find
children's books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers , although there is often a manager
who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every moming you
see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don't encourage this, rather ask
people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs :  all profits go to charity work .  Charity  shops  raise  more
than £110  million  a year ,funding (資助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor
children , homeless and disabled people , and much more. What better
place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense.
You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.
1. The author loves the charity shop mainly because of__________ .
A. its convenient location
B. its great variety of goods
C. its spirit of good will
D. its nice shopping environment
2. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to_________.
A. sell cheap products
B. deal with unwanted things
C. raise money for patients
D. help a foreign country
3. Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops? _________
A. The operating costs are very low.
B. The staff are usually well paid.
C. 90%  of the donations are second-hand.
D. They are open twenty-four hours a day.
4. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A. What to Buy a Charity Shops
B. Charity Shop :  Its Origin & Development
C. Charity Shop :  Where You Buy to Donate
D. The Public's Concern about Charity Shops
