I am trying to muster(鼓起)the courage to toss away my mobile phone to enjoy a more peaceful and ring –free life.

Can you imagine not having your mobile phone? In our high-tech, in-a-hurry age, a cell-free life is a hard concept to swallow. Our mobile phones can now access the Internet, and many people feel the need to express their every thought on their blog pages. If I gave up my cellphone, people would think I was mad.

I wish I had the strength to toss away my technology . I have an office phone, a home phone, e-mail and if people want to contact me. they can. If I’m out, people can leave a message. Do they really need to find me 24/7 ? However, I’m a bit like Frodo in the movie Lord of the Rings. The power of the ring is too strong and I can’t let it go.

Mobile phones have become necessary tools in our busy life. For most people , they hold all contacts and many of us don't write up address books any more. The latest phones carry our music, pictures, movies and everything else. We feel lost without this device and when we do misplace it , we feel cut off from our fellow,

“Where have you been?” said a friend, who saw me a week after I lost my cell, “I tried calling you , but you disappeared. You disappeared off the face of the Earth。” See, when you don’t have a mobile phone, you don’t exist.

I’m not really going to toss my mobile phone away, in fact. We humans are such social animals and mobile phones serve us well. So in 2009, I’ve dicided not to serve my mobile phone. Like all machine, I can always turn it off.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源: 題型:閱讀理解

Tuesday was the eighth day of the 12 th month on the Chinese lunar calendar. I first became aware of the day as a traditional festival called laba, or the eighth day of the winter month – when I was working in a factory 30 years ago.

At lunch time, some elder co-workers opened their lunch boxes, and out came the sweet smell of well-cooked rice porridge mixed with beans, nuts and dates(棗)and they talked excitedly. Then, I wondered why there should be such an unnecessary excitement over the  laba festival. Growing up during the “cultural revolution” (1966-1976), when almost all traditional things were considered out-of-date,I had scarcely become aware of most of the traditional festivals.

I really started to value and celebrate these traditional festivals when I began to write about  Chinese culture. It is really encouraging that, despite the dramatic changes and modernization that our country has experienced over the past three decades, people have come to treasure many of our traditions more. Some people may have a complaint against the extreme commercialization(商業(yè)化)of these traditional festivals, but I believe the business promotions have at least worked to increase people’s awareness.

Most of the traditional Chinese festivals are celebrated with feasts. No wonder that on Tuesday a lot of people were buying rice, nuts, dry fruit, and beans from supermarkets and stores. A few thousand went to the Yonghegong Lama Temple to make prays for peace and happiness.

Now that we have celebrated laba festival,we are now looking forward to the Lunar New Year, when we are supposed to have a lot more feasts. In fact, it is reported that almost all popular restaurants have been booked out for the Lunar New Year Eve dinner in major cities across the country.

1.As a whole, the passage is mainly organized by_________.

    A.space               B.examples          C.time                 D.comparison

2.What is the writer’s attitude toward Chinese Festivals?

A.He takes them seriously all the time.

B.He values them more than before.

C.He expects only the Lunar New Year.

D.He thinks Chinese Festival are too commercialized.

3.The common ways to celebrate traditional Chinese festivals in the passage are to________.

① stop working in the factory               ② enjoy some special delicious food

③ have feasts with the family or friends     ④ pray for peace in temples

⑤ buy rice, nuts, fruits and beans         ⑥ write about Chinese culture

       A.①③⑤            B.②⑤⑥             C.①④⑥               D.②③④

4.From the last paragraph it can be inferred that now_________.

A.people are eager to show their richer life

B.people have become tired of laba festival

C.people are living a better life than before

D.people are always active in celebrating festivals

 (05·全國(guó)ⅠE篇)

“Soon, you’re going to have to move out!” cried my neighbor upon seeing the largest tomato plant known to mankind, or at least known i: exactly; tab-stops: 105.0pt 189.0pt 273.0pn my neighborhood.
One tiny 9-inch plant, bought for $1. 25 in the spring, has already taken over much of my rose bed, covering much of other plants, and is well on its way to the front door.
Roses require a good deal of care, and if it weren’t for the pleasure they give, it wouldn’t be worth the work. As it is, I have a garden full of sweet-smelling roses for most of the year. bushes must be pruned(剪枝) in early spring, leaving ugly woody branches until the new growth appears a few weeks later. It was the space available(可用的) in the garden that led me into planting just one little tomato plant. A big mistake.
Soil conditions made just perfect for roses turn out to be even more perfect for tomatoes. The daily watering coupled with full sun and regular fertilizing(施肥) have turned the little plant into a tall bush. The cage I placed around it as the plant grew has long since disappeared under the thick leaves.
Now the task I face in harvesting the fruit is twofold; First, I have to find the red ones among the leaves, which means I almost have to stand on my head, and once found I have to reach down and under, pick the tomatoes and withdraw(縮回) my full fist without dropping the prize so dearly won. I found two full-blown white roses completely hidden as I picked tomatoes in June, but they were weak and the leaves already yellow for lack of light.
Here I am faced with a painful small decision: To tear up a wonderful and productive tomato plant that offers up between ten and twenty ripe sweet tomatoes each day or say goodbye to several expensive and treasured roses. Like Scarlett in Gone With the Wind, I’ll think about th painful at tomorrow.
71. What ate the requirements for the healthy growth of roses?
   A. A lot of care and the right soil.
   B. Frequent pruning and fertilizing.
   C. Tomato plants grown alongside.
   D. Cages placed around the roots.
72. The writer planted the tomato because ______.
   A. it cost only $1. 25
   B. the soil was just right for it
   C. there was room for it in the garden
   D. the roses’ branches needed to be covered
73. This year the writer’s roses were ______.
   A. removed from the rose bed
   B. picked along with the tomatoes
   C. mostly damaged by too much sunlight
   D. largely hidden under the tomato plant
74. By saying “the prize so dearly won” in paragraph 5, the writer wants to ______.
   A. show the difficulty in picking the tomatoes
   B. show the hardship of growing the roses
   C. express her liking for the roses
   D. express her care for the tomatoes
75. In the situation described in the text, one good thing is that ______.
   A. the roses cost the writer little money
   B. the writer has a daily harvest of tomatoes
   C. someone will help the writer make the decision
   D. the writer can now enjoy both the roses and tomatoes

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:吉林省實(shí)驗(yàn)中學(xué)2009屆高三第四次模擬考試 題型:閱讀理解

Dr Wiseman started “the laugh lab” project in September 2001. It is the largest study of humour. Participants are invited to log on  to the laugh lab website, give a few personal details , tell their favorite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.

The project will last for a year, and the organizers hope to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose, the researches want to know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humor. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh.

This is a subject that has long interested psychologists and philosophers. Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves.

By December 2001 over 10,000 jokes had been submitted(提交). This gave the scientists enough evidence to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humor, for instance.

“Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humor,” said Dr Wiseman. “Males use humor to appear superior(優(yōu)越的) to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer word play.”

Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humor. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humor”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp: “You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $500?” “Yes. What’s the second question?”

The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humor. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.

Dr Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computer. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief. Computers already seem like they can do everything. At least they should leave the funny stuff to us.

1.Scientist started “the laugh lab” project ____________

A.to find the funniest joke in European countries

B.to know what funny people are from different nations and cultures

C.to find out the differences between the male and female sense of humor

D.to get more personal details about participants

2.What is the main idea of the 4 th and 5 th paragraph?

A.Man and woman have different senses of humour.

B.Male and female have similar senses of humour.

C.About 10,000 jokes have been submitted from September 2001 to December 2001.

D.Scientists have collected enough evidence to make conclusions.

3.The writer gave the examples of the British, the French and the Germans        .

A.to show that French people have a better sense of humour

B.to prove the British people have a sense of “toilet humour”

C.to show people from different nations have different senses of humour

D.to prove that the Germans have no sense of humour

4.Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The jokes by computer are less funny than those by humans

B.The Germans cannot find the submitted jokes amusing

C.Males are better at word play compared with women

D.Females like to use humor to show that they are superior
