I love charity(慈善) shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won’t find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity’s appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations(捐贈物). They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children’s books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don’t encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than £110 million a year, funding(資助)medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.
【小題1】. The author loves the charity shop mainly because of _______.

A.its convenient location
B.its great variety of goods
C.its spirit of goodwill
D.its nice shopping environment
【小題2】. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to ____.
A.sell cheap products
B.deal with unwanted things
C.raise money for patients
D.help a foreign country
【小題3】. Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops?
A.The operating costs are very low.
B.The staff are usually well paid.
C.90% of the donations are second-hand.
D.They are open twenty-four hours a day.
【小題4】. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.What to Buy a Charity Shops.
B.Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development.
C.Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate.
D.The Public’s Concern about Charity Shops.

Coupons to spend
“How did you spend your coupons?”
On their first day back to school, many students in Hangzhou greeted each other this way.
The coupons referred to the 100 yuan coupons each student received form the city government before the Spring Festival holidays. Over 260,000 primary school and middle school students were given coupons. They could use them in local stores and supermarkets, or to see movies and buy books.
The same coupons have also been given to low income families in Hangzhou. Other cities, including Chengdu and Nanjing, also gave coupons to their citizens. More cities are expected to follow their lead.
Why are local governments doing this?
These programmes are all part of a broader effort in China to increase domestic demand in the face of the global financial crisis.
The crisis has seriously affected China’s exports and investments (投資). Many factories in southern cities have been closed down. Some companies are laying off workers or reducing their pay. The stock market and real estate market have been falling.
In a time of financial crisis, people usually respond by saving money. They are uncertain about the future and are afraid that more difficult times may be ahead. Now many people are choosing not to spend money carelessly. Major chain stores have seen a sharp slowdown in sales, analysts say.
But spending keeps an economy healthy. If people don’t spend, there will be too many products in the market. Then shops will stop buying products from factories. When factories receive no orders, they close down. The workers there accordingly lose their jobs. Also, if people don’t spend, the service industry suffers. The total result is that the whole economy breaks down.
Issuing coupons is a practical and effective way to increase domestic demand in the current situation, said Jiang Zengwei, vice-minister of China’s Ministry of Commerce. Hangzhou reported a rise in customers in local markets during Spring Festival holiday.
However, issuing coupons is only a temporary measure. To increase consumers’ confidence, the government needs to establish a sound secure social system in the long term. When people don’t have to worry about education, health care and their pension, they will be more willing to spend instead of saving.
【小題1】Why are local governments issuing coupons?

A.To increase domestic demand in the face of the global financial crisis.
B.To enable students to use them in local stores and supermarkets, or to see movies and buy books independently.
C.To help those low income families in the global financial crisis.
D.To show the government’s ability to solve economic problems
【小題2】What is NOT the influence that the global financial crisis has brought us?
A.China’s exports and investments have been seriously affected.
B.People begin to spend money without a second thought.
C.Workers are faced with losing jobs and the reduction of the salaries.
D.The active stock market and real estate market have gone.
【小題3】What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Issuing coupons is a practical and effective way to increase domestic demand in a long term.
B.The total result of saving money is that the whole economy breaks down.
C.The government may carry out new policies to encourage citizens to be willing to spend in the near future.
D.After issuing the coupons, the local markets have seen a rise in customers during Spring Festival holiday.
【小題4】If the government is to print a slogan on the coupons to restore consumers’ confidence, what might be used to promote the idea?
A.Spend now, save later.
B.Spend money like there’s no tomorrow; come on!
C.Spend money like it’s going out of style; let’s do it!
D.Big spender, wise spender.

Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Let’s see if I can name a few proverbs “off the cuff” since I haven’t prepared for it.

English expressions with “pants”

People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are restless or nervous have “ants in their pants.” They might also “fly by the seat of their pants” -- they use their natural sense to do something instead of their learned knowledge. Sometimes, people may “get caught with their pants down” -- they are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say “she wears the pants in the family.”

When people what to say something about money

Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can “burn a hole in your pocket.” Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to “tighten your belt” -- you may have to live on less money and spend your money carefully. But once you have succeeded in budgeting your money, you will have that skill “under your belt.”

I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. I really “take my hat off to them.” Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it “at the drop of a hat” -- immediately, without waiting. And sadly, you cannot “pull money out of a hat” -- you cannot get money by inventing or imagining it.

English expressions with “shoes”

Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are “too big for their boots” think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people. I really do. You can bet your boots on that!

Yet, truly important people are hard to replace. Rarely can you “fill their shoes” -- or replace them with someone equally effective.

English expressions with “shirt”

My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too firm and severe. They think he is a real “stuffed shirt.” But I know that my father “wears his heart on his sleeve” -- he shows his feelings openly. And, he knows how to “keep his shirt on” -- he stays calm and never gets angry or too excited.

1.What is this passage mainly about?

A. How to say English correctly and properly.

B. Why English expressions include words about clothes.

C. Which words can be used to describe my father.

D. What people mean when they use some proverbs.

2.Which of the following proverbs are not related to money?

A. tighten one’s belt                    B. burn a hole in one’s pocket

C. get caught with their pants down        D. take one’s hat off to them

3.Tim often considers himself the most important person in the world , which is far from the truth .We may say ____.

A.he is “too big for their boots”.

B. he “bet his boots on that ”.

C. he “ fill their shoes”.

D. he “wears his heart on his sleeve ”.

4.If you want to praise somebody for his calmness when facing danger , you may say ___.

A. “You really fill your shoes”

B. “Awesome ! You wear your heart on your sleeve!”

C. “Amazing !How can you keep your shirt on at that time!”

D. “Cool! You are truly a stuffed shirt”.

On a hot summer day, a soft drink can really take away your thirst. At home, at school, in the park or at the movies—you can find one almost anywhere.

         Carbonated(碳酸的)

You can see bubbles in these! Of all soft drinks sold, about 75 percent are carbonated. But be careful, carbonated soft drinks have lots of sugar and caffeine. Caffeine is not very good for you in the summer, because it takes water out of your body. And the sugar can make you overweight if you drink too much.

         Fruit juice

There are different kinds of juice. One kind is made only from fresh fruit. This kind of fruit juice may not taste sweet enough for some people, but it is nutritious. Another kind of fruit juice tastes good but has lots of sugar in it. Many young people buy this kind because the advertisements are good. It is bad for your teeth and bones to drink lots of this.

         Energy drinks

These kinds of drinks have caffeine and things that make people get excited in them. They are sometimes called “party drinks”. Doctors say that if you drink too much of this kind, you may have a heart attack.

         Bottled water

We have lots of different kinds of bottled water, such as mineral water, purified water and distilled(蒸餾的) water. They are clean and easy to drink. But it is best not to drink very cold water. It may make your stomach feel bad.

         Sports drinks

Most of these have funny names like “Scream” and “G-Vital”. They have lots of vitamins and minerals in them. After you play sports, you may want to drink one of these.

But if you just spend your summer holiday sitting around watching TV, you won’t need them at all!

1.Which of the following is NOT suitable for you to take if you go climbing?

         A. Carbonated soft drinks.

B. Fruit juice.

         C. Bottled water.

D. Sports drink.

2. If you have to stay up late, what kind of water may help you?

A. Fruit juice.

B. Energy drinks.

C. Bottled water.

D. Sports drink.

3. What’s the probable reason for you to drink sports drinks after sport?

         A. They have funny names that sound very exciting.

         B. They can recover the minerals lost in your sweat.

         C. They can effectively get rid of your thirst.

         D. They can take away your vitamins and minerals.

4.What’s the main purpose of the author writing this article?

         A. To advise us to keep away from unhealthy soft drinks.

         B. To teach us some useful ways of keeping healthy.

         C. To make advertisements for the soft drink companies.

         D. To tell us how to choose a suitable one from different drinks.
