However, it is one of the most important jobs in the world, and when there are no dustmen to   44   the rubbish, the general   45   soon becomes aware that something is wrong. Recently, the dustmen of England went on strike for higher wages.

During the first few days it was regarded as a  46  .But when the first two weeks had passed, and the dustbins were overflowing in nearly every backyard in the country, the joke did not seem so  47  any more.  48  the strike continued, people could not  49   the hills of rubbish around their dustbins, and they looked for other places in which to  50  it. One day last summer, watching the boys and girls trying to catch butterflies I remembered something happened when I was young. When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina, something happened to me that cured me forever of wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.
We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening at dusk the mockingbirds would come and rest in the trees and sing. No musician can sing more beautiful than the birds. I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way would have my own private musician.
I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, the bird flied about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.
I had left the cage out, and on the second day my new pet’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby.
The following morning when I went to see how my bird was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened! I had taken good care of my little bird.
Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist, happened to be visiting my father at the time, hearing me crying over the death of my bird, explained what had occurred. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poison berries. She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in cage.”
Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.

When I first got an e-mail account ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail,I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all. If we want e-mail to continue to be useful, we need specific laws that make spamming(發送垃圾郵件)a crime.
If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, individual e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails. Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?
This problem is troubling individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company. Companies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are, in the end, passed on to the consumer.
For these reasons, I believe that lawmakers need to legislate(立法)against spare. Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

A.Companies rely on e-mail for communications.
B.More people in the world communicate by e-mail.

【小題3】According to Paragraph 3, who is the final victim of spam?
A.The business.B.The advertiser.C.The employee.D.The consumer.
【小題4】What is the purpose of the text?
A.To inform.B.To educate.C.To persuade.D.To instruct.

B?
Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami (海嘯), adding weight to the idea that they possess a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said on Thursday. Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean Island’s coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found. ?
“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening,” H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Department said on Wednesday. ?
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve (自然保護區) and home to hundreds of wild elephants. “There has been a lot of evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proved,” said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo. “There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting,” he said. ?Other authorities agreed with this conclusion. “Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters,” said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife. ?
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators(食肉動物). The idea of an animal’s “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lanka’s damaged coast is likely to add to. ??
60. This passage is mainly about  _____.?
A. the damage that was caused in the Indian Ocean tsunami?
B. why animals can save themselves from natural disasters?
C. how to protect the wildlife when disaster happens?
D. the different opinions about animals’ natural power ?
61. Which of the following is true according to the passage??
A. It has been proved that animals have a sixth sense.?
B. Research has been made on the special movements of animals before disasters.?
C. It’s generally considered that animals can sense the coming of disasters.?
D. It can be tested that animals have the known sense to escape from the disasters.
62. What does the term “sixth sense” in the passage mean??
A. It is the natural ability of animals that can’t save them from danger.?
B. It is the animal’s imagination in the brain.?
C. It is some hidden power to say in advance that something will happen.?
D. It is a kind of sense that is the same as smell or hearing. ?
63. Which section does the passage most probably appear in a newspaper??
A. Entertainment.   B. Discovery.   C. Future.   D. Culture. ?

Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we should be able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may know really where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham( 火腿 )? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburger. They didn’t speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered. “We came from Hamburger.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like what the men from Hamburger ate. Then he put them between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Today “ hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. The reason may be found in any large English dictionary.
