The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs.           Some people are compulsive (難以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games.

Many people enjoy going to malls or stores more and more every day, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked on shopping and usually buy things that they don’t need. Even though they don’t have enough money, they buy everything they want.

The question is: why do they have this addiction? There isn’t a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say that they feel more important and better after they buy something.

Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addiction, but it can bring out problems. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot.          They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don’t have.

A. Once you are addicted to alcohol or drugs, it is difficult to get rid of.

B. Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity.

C. They also tend to have this addiction when they feel guilty.

D. However, in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions.

E. People addicted to computer games consider the games as great ways to amuse themselves.

F. They get deep in debt, and they can even go bankrupt(破產) and get sent to prison.

G. It can also cause financial problems.

Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. Why do their parents just give them a certain amount?   51
The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family.   52   Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money.
First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until it is the right time.  53
In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents give pocket money if the children help around the home. Some experts think it not wise to pay the children for doing that. 54
Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with
themoney. They can spend it by giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want.   55  Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. Saving can also open the door to future saving and investing for children.

A.They can save it for future use.
B.Timing is another consideration.
C.As helping at home is a normal part of family life.
D.Some children are not good at managing their pocket money.
E. Learning how to get money is very important for every child.
F. One main purpose is to let kids learn how to manage their own money.
G. By doing so, these children will learn that spending must be done with a budget(預算).

I live in Japan, where electronic items are a way of life, so it is no surprise that many students carry these little electronic dictionaries. E-dictionaries may be lighter and compacter (簡潔的) than any paper dictionary.  【小題1】  However, to me, these are pretty much the limits to their advantages.
I think e-dictionaries should be limited in their use in classrooms. 【小題2】
E-dictionaries are much more expensive. In Japan, they cost as little as 10,000 yen(US$100)much as 40,000 yen, depending on how many functions you want (or think you want) and depending on how fashionable you are. My trusty Random House paper dictionary is copyrighted at1995, cost me a mere US$12.95 plus tax.
E-dictionaries are more fragile. Drop your paper dictionary. Go ahead. Hold it above your head and drop it. 【小題3】
E-dictionaries need batteries. Batteries are temperature sensitive. Batteries cost money, too.
E-dictionaries have keypads. Typing in the spelling of a word is harder and more time consuming than looking through pages and using the index at the top of each page.
【小題4】 Sound . Little devices beep (嘟嘟聲) when you press the buttons, but it is very disturbing to some people in a classroom situation or library.
Finally, let’s consider making corrections or additions. No dictionary is perfect, paper version or electronic. However, when you find something you’d like to change in the e-dictionary, you can’t do anything about it. You can pencil in some notes with the paper type. Similarly, if you learn a word that isn’t in the dictionary, a few notes of a pencil make it easy to increase its memory capacity.  【小題5】And, for those students whose habit is to mark certain words with a highlight pen for ease of future reference, again, the paper dictionary wins out.

A.But it is impossible to do so with a keypad model.
B.They may even contain more words and expressions.
C. Let me add a statement about one that really troubles me.
D.Now, try this with any lightweight plastic e-dictionary, and you’ll be picking up the pieces.
E.That huge, heavy paper dictionary that you see in your library looks like a building block in size and weight.
F.E-dictionaries have advantages as well as disadvantages.
G.Let’s take a look at the following reasons.

What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? 【小題1】.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle.【小題2】. Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about.【小題3】.If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
【小題4】.According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “【小題5】.”
