As more students begin to use computers for longer periods of time, more of them are suffering from eyestrain (視疲勞).Just a few hours in front of a computer screen can make a person's eyes feel tired and painful.A number of eye doctors have studied this growing problem and have found ways to deal with it.Following their advice will help keep computer users more comfortable. Here is some of the advice.

The light in a room shouldn't be brighter than the computer screen itself. In many classrooms, however, the lights are far brighter than they should be..Students can block some of this light by wearing baseball caps if they're allowed at school.

A special computer screen should be used to cut down on bright light because it is especially tiring to the eyes.Another problem to avoid is the wrong kind of contrast. It is best to have dark letters on a light background. This causes less eyestrain than light letters on a dark background.

Students should be seated so that they are looking down at the computer screen rather than straight ahead, which is a far more tiring angle. The top of the monitor should be slightly lower than the top of the head.

The length of time students spend in front of a computer screen leads greatly to eyestrain.Students should take frequent breaks by looking away from the screen every fifteen or twenty minutes.During

that time they should either close there eyes or focus on an object at a distance. Long – term computer use can dry out the eyes, so students should remember to blink frequently while in front of the screen.

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extend do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?

In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be

more self-absorbed or self-concerned.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences

. In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.

Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer, either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.

In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficially relationship with others.

The USA is the first country where Mother’s Day appeared.

On May 9th, 1906,an American Anne Jevis’s mother died. Ann was in deep sorrow. In order to memorize her mother, she put forward a proposal to fix a day as Mother’s Day. On May 7th ,1914,the Congress of the USA passed a law ,making the second Sunday of May “Mother’s Day”.

Today millions of Americans observe Mother’s Day in some ways. They buy more than 150,000,000Mother’s Day greeting cards. Companies produce more than 1,000 different kinds. Most of the cards show pictures of flowers, hearts or other things that people feel are linked to being a mother. They have messages that express a person’s love for his or her mother. Some are humorous. And some have no words. People can express their own feelings for their mother. Many people give flowers for Mother’s Day. It is one of the busiest days of the year for the flower industry. Many people have written songs about mothers and Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day is a time for young children to do special things for their mother. Some would make a special gift or draw a special picture. One family activity on Mother’s Day is to have the children cook the early morning meal .Then they serve the food to their mother while she is still in bed. Or they might clean the house so she does not have to do it. Fathers might take care of the children that day so the mothers can rest, or take a walk, or read a book. Many mothers feel that this free time on their special day is a very good Mother’s Day gift.

Some families will get together for a meal at a local eating place. This means that mothers do not have to cook on their special day. Coming out to dinner has become a tradition on Mother’s Day. As a result, restaurants are extremely crowded that day. It has become one of the busiest days of the year for the restaurant industry in the United States.

Now Mother’s Day has been an international festival and more than 40 countries have accepted this festival.

第一節 任務型讀寫(共10小題,每小題1分,滿分10分)
閱讀下列短文,根據所讀內容在文章后的表格中填入最恰當的單詞。
注意:表格中的每個空格只填1個單詞。
In a research, it was found that only four out of every five employees were happy at work. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the salary or the love for the work that made people happy. In stead friendly, supportive colleagues and a good manager have been found to be the primary causes of happiness at work. So how do you keep your spirits up and develop a sense of joy on the job? Here is some advice.
Happiness is a state of mind, and though not many people realize it, staying happy at work is totally based on a positive attitude towards your job. Concentrating(集中注意力) on the bright side of the work rather than keeping talking about what makes you unhappy is the basic key to happiness.
Challenge yourself and take charge of your own growth professionally. Boredom is one of the primary reasons that cause people to change jobs. To avoid feeling bored, you can find new challenges and it’s a great feeling to take control over what you do and see a task through.
Complete our tasks, however disagreeable or tough they might be. This gives you an individual(單個的,特別的) sense of achievement and encourages you to work towards your goals in future. Also keep learning and gaining new insights while at work.
Sitting and staring at your screen all day long isn’t going to help you. Instead take breaks and go outside for some time. They don’t necessarily have to be long breaks but staying out for a few minutes to feel the gentle wind can keep you happy. Eat your lunch out side or walk for a few minutes during that hour, which helps you stay happy at work.

請認真閱讀下列短文,并根據所讀內容在文章后表格里填入最恰當的單詞。注意:每空只填一個單詞。

Have you ever started sneezing when eating peanuts, getting rash on your skin or feeling your heat starting to beat faster? Statistics show that around 12 million Americans suffer from food allergy, with 6.9 million allergic to seafood and 3.3 million allergic to peanuts or tree nuts.

Food allergic symptoms occur immediately after having an allergen food. The food is treated as harmful to the body, by the immune system, which defends our organism from harmful external attacks. Here are a few guidelines about things you should know and how to put them into practice to prevent food allergies and eat healthily.

When buying food, read attentively the labels on the food products. All manufacturers according to the new Food Allergen and Consumer Act must clearly list all the elements of the product including the 8 food allergens even if they are present in very small amounts. Don’t buy these products, even if they might be cheaper.

Parents should be very careful when preparing food. The table and cooking tools used need to be clean. It is recommended to cook the food of the allergic person in the first place.

Food allergic persons should have a little patience. In certain people, the allergy disappears gradually. Visit your doctor at regular times to find about the progress of your allergies instead of having strict diets every day.

Keep a diary to note the foods that worsen your food allergies, new experiences and changes that you notice. Being tempted to have a piece of cake can be very dangerous. Your health is much more worth than it. Always think about the efforts people around you are putting to create an allergic-free environment for you.

Allergic persons should avoid consuming cakes that are not homemade and should always carry some snacks on them. Buying food in restaurants is risky.
