科目:高中英語 來源: 題型:閱讀理解

Kieron Williamson, a seven-year-old British boy, is being recognized as an art genius after selling 16 paintings for 18, 000 pounds in just 14 minutes. This boy has artistic skills that would be the envy of any serious painter and drawn comparisons to Pablo Picasso, a child prodigy(神童)who became one of the most recognized artists of the 20th century.

It all began on a family holiday to Cornwall on the southwest English coast when Kieron was five. Inspired by the view, he asked his parents for his first sketch-pad (速寫紙). From that moment on, he became deeply interested. While supportive, Kieron’s parents are careful not to push their son. He only paints when and what he wants.

He has a waiting list of hundreds and requests for his works have been flooding in. His father said a sale of Kieron’s works held in November even drew a buyer from Japan. “We had people driving down that night, there were people on the door waiting to come in the morning who had been standing outside, the phones were going mad as soon as the door opened at nine o’clock and within 14 minutes all the 16 pictures had gone, ” he said.

All this talent, money and high praise could so easily go to a young boy’s head, but Kieron said his friends keep him grounded. “Some of them want to be as good as me and some of them think. . . Umn, ‘you are not too special’, ” he said.

Kieron’s favourite painter is British artist Edward Seago and he has spent some of his earnings buying a work by his hero. The rest is being invested by his parents until he reaches 25. Kieron’s parents and his younger sister Billi-Jo don’t see him as anything other than a normal seven-year-old boy who likes to tear around the house and who’s mad about football. But for now, with so much still to learn, there’s only one thing he wants to be when he grows up. He said, “I think I’ll definitely be an artist. ”

26. According to Paragraph 1, we can know Kieron Williamson ________.

A. painted 16 paintings in only 14 minutes

B. draws as well as Picasso did

C. is one of the most recognized artists

D. has unusual ability in painting

27. What made Kieron Williamson begin to love painting?

A. His first sketch-pad.

B. His parents’ encouragement.

C. The view at the seaside.

D. His swimming near the coast.

28. In Kieron Williamson’s friends’ opinion, he ________.

A. is famous but a little proud

B. isn’t very special from other children

C. isn’t worth praising at all

D. is hard to get along with

29. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.

A. Edward Seago thinks highly of Kieron’s painting

B. Kieron likes doing sports and painting instead of studying

C. Kieron’s family is very poor

D. Kieron wants to be a great painter

30. The passage mainly tells us________.

A. a seven-year-old painting genius

B. how to be a great painter

C. Kieron Williamson may become the second Picasso

D. the painting changed Kieron Williamson’s life greatly

科目:高中英語 來源:2011屆湖北黃岡中學高三最后一次適應性考試英語試卷 題型:閱讀理解

I was working with a client who was completely burned out on her career and life and then ready for a career change. As we were talking, she said, “I just wish I had meaningful work. I don’t feel like I am making a difference. I am just wasting my life.” This is the theme I hear most often from clients who have been in the workforce awhile. All of us want to feel like we are making a difference. We want to believe our work means something. The problem comes in defining “meaningful work”. What is it? That answer is different for everyone. For some meaningful work might be helping others organize their office. For others it may mean making a million dollars.
What really matters is how you see it. What is meaningful work to you? Take out a piece of paper and answer these questions. How do you define meaningful work? When do you feel like you are really making a difference? What work have you done so far that feels the most meaningful? Write down whatever comes to mind.
What you want to do is meaningful. It is very easy to start judging yourself as being selfish. Stop! Allow yourself to be honest. The fact is when Picasso painted; he was doing it because he liked to paint. He was not thinking, “Oh, I hope this brings joy to others’ lives.” He painted because he wanted to. When Beethoven composed, he did it because he loved music. Even scientists searching for a cure for cancer are immersed in their work because it fascinates them.
Don’t look down on your work. It is easy to downplay the importance of work that feels meaningful. I remember Tony Robbins told a story of talking with the owner of a major company. The man said to Tony, “I wish I could do what you do because it makes such adifference in people’s lives”. Tony said, “You have got to be kidding! Look at what adifference you make. You provide work, health insurance and security for thousands ofpeople!” Don’t underestimate the value you provide.
Take a look at what you have written about meaningful work. Do you see any themes? How do you wish to contribute to this world? Whatever you choose, remember that the greatest gift you can give is to find work that makes you feel fulfilled and delighted. Respect your preference because giving your gifts to the world, whatever they look like, is the most meaningful action you can ever take.
【小題1】. What does the writer mean by mentioning the famous people?

A.Famous people are selfish to start work for themselves.
B.Doing meaningful work requires our interest in it.
C.Interest is the best teacher in learning.
D.Honesty makes for the greatest people.
【小題2】. When you downplay the value of your work, you tend to think it is ______.
A.quite differentB.very successfulC.not meaningfulD.less important
【小題3】.According to the passage, what meaningful job does the writer advise us to take?
A.The one which is popular in society.
B.The one which brings you profits.
C.The one which wins you fame.
D.The one which interests you.
【小題4】. The article is intended to ________.
A.explain what is the most important in changing one’s job
B.advise taking an immediate action to find meaningful work
C.suggest we should show confidence and talent in work
D.tell us the problem that the author’s client met

科目:高中英語 來源:福建省廈門市2010屆高三下學期3月月考 題型:閱讀理解

D
Bernice Gallego sat down one day this summer, as she does pretty much every day, and began listing items on eBay. She dug into a box and pulled out a baseball card. She stopped for a moment and admired the picture. “Red Stocking B. B. Club of cincinnati,” the card read, under the reddish brown color photo of 10 men with their socks pulled up to their knees.
As a collector and seller, it's her job to spot old items that might have value today. It's what Bernice, 72, and her husband, Al Gallego, 80, have been doing since 1974 at their California antique (古玩) store.
This card, she figured, was worth selling on eBay.She took a picture, wrote a description and put it up for auction (拍賣).She put a $10 price tag on it, deciding against $15 because it would have cost her an extra 20 cents.Later that night she got a few odd inquiries—someone wanting to know whether the card was real, someone wanting her to end the auction and sell him the card immediately.KS5U
The card is actually 139 years old.Sports card collectors call the find "extremely rare" and estimate the card could fetch five, or perhaps, six figures at auction.
Just like that, Bemice is the least likely character ever for a rare-baseball card story."I didn't even know baseball existed that far back," Gallego says, "I don't think that I've ever been to a baseball game." The theory is that the card came out of a storage space they bought a few years back.It is not uncommon in their line of work to buy the entire contents of storage units for around $200.
When she met with card trader Rick Mirigian, she found out what the card was—an 1869 advertisement with a picture of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.
"When I came to meet her and she took it out of a sandwich bag and she was smoking a cigarette, I almost fainted," Mirigian says."They've uncovered a piece of history that few people will ever be able to imagine. That card is history. It's like unearthing a Mona Lisa or a Picasso."
68.What can we conclude from Paragraph 3?
A.Bernice had to pay some fees for her card on eBay.
B.Bernice wanted to end the auction that night.
C.Bernice decided to sell the card for $15.
D.eBay charged her 20 cents for the card.
69.The underlined word "fetch" in Paragraph 4 most probably means "____".
A.go and bring  B.add up to       C.go down to    D.be sold for
70.From the passage, we may learn that ____.
A.Bernice is a baseball fan
B.Bernice is the last person to purchase the rare-baseball card
C.Bernice unexpectedly became the owner of the rare-baseball card
D.Bernice didn't realize the value of the card until she put it up for auction
71.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Surprisingly Valuable Discovery      B.Bemice Gallego—A Lucky Collector
C.Sports Card Collectors               D.The History of the Baseball Card
