第一節 閱讀理解(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

    閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D項中,選出最佳選項,并在答

題卡上將該項涂黑。

The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet... We are surroundedby the word "diet" everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attractedby the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking aboutwhat diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us

psychologically and physically.

Diet products significantly weakenus psychologically. On one level, we are not

allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the

weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods.

Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale

instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in food labels.

On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time wehave a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that wedon't have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.

The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have onus, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm ourbodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing ourbodies from having basic nutrients (營養成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zerocalorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonderproducts. Diet products, may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into dietproducts are potentially dangerous.

Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time toseriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not inthe power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist

diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using

them.

  A. try out a variety of diet foods

  A. losing weight is effortless

  B. it costs a lot to lose weight

  C. diet products bring no pain

  D. diet products are free from calories                        ,

44. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products_________.

第三部分:閱讀(共兩節,滿分40分)
第一節:閱讀理解(共15小題,每小題2分,滿分30分)
閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
What is a creepy crawly?
A few years ago, I was on a bicycle trip when I got off my bike for a rest. I sat down on the grass. A few seconds later, I was covered in ants. They were swarming all over me so I got up and brushed them off. It was a strange experience but I soon forgot about it.
A couple of years later, I was living in Jordan. I had just moved into a modern flat and was unpacking plates when I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I looked over at the kitchen drawer and there was a cockroach crawling out of it. I screamed. Then I grabbed a can of insecticide and sprayed it on the cockroach. He ran under the nearby bathroom door. It took me three days before I found the courage to open the bathroom door to see if he was still alive. He wasn’t.
Why did I react so violently to one lone insect when a closer encounter with hundreds of ants hardly affected me? The answer is easy: because cockroaches are creepy crawlies and ants aren’t. Creepy crawlies are those little bugs which provoke feelings such as uneasiness, anxiety or dislike – they make your skin crawl.
Did you know that some people feel such a fear of bugs that it becomes a phobia? Psychologists have offered many explanations. Some say we associate them with dirt and disease. Or that these are life forms that are so alien to us, that we find them repulsive(令人厭惡的) for their dissimilarity.
Insects, however, don’t follow our rules – they just do what they want and invade our space. Unfortunately, although insects and bugs have been a successful animal species up to now, many of them, like many other species nowadays, are under threat of extinction. Entomologists warn that this could upset entire ecosystems and lead to all kinds of disastrous consequences.
So my plea to you is: the next time you feel the urge to stamp on, splatter or spray a creepy crawly, give a thought to the planet and stop.
1. Why did the author mention the ants in the beginning?
A. Because the experience with the ants presents a sharp contrast to that with the cockroach later.
B. Because the author wants to show her preference to the ants and her dislike for the cockroach.
C. Because both ants and cockroaches are creepy crawlies that the author dislikes.
D. Because meeting the ants is an unusual experience that the author can hardly forget.
2. What does “insecticide” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. a kind of fruit juice.                             B. a kitchen knife.
C. liquid for killing insects.                        D. cleanser for the bathroom.
3. How does the author feel about the bugs like cockroaches?
A. The author doesn’t mind the contact with those harmless small creatures.
B. They make the author feel so awful that they should be killed.
C. They invade our space and become a threat to humans.
D. They still deserve a place for keeping the balance of the nature.
4. Which of the following is NOT the reason why the cockroach makes the author’s skin crawl?
A. It looks so strange and different that the author can’t accept its appearance.
B. It can make the author feel sick and cause a strong dislike.
C. The author may relate it to something dirty or disease at the sight of it.
D. It reminds the author of the experience of meeting hundreds of ants.
5. Which of the following statements about bugs is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Some people may be frightened so much by bugs that it leads to a psychological barrier in some degree.
B. People can enjoy a cleaner living environment if more bugs like cockroaches are killed.
C. Many bugs are in danger of extinction so they should be placed under human’s protection.
D. Some bugs are extremely unpleasant that people have a strong wish to destroy them.

When Jackie Robinson walked onto Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, on April 15, 1947, he changed baseball forever. As the first African American to play in the Major League in modern times, many believe he changed the country forever.
Robinson was born in 1919. He lived in a time when rules controlled what African Americans could do. He was a top athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. But playing for a major League team was off limits to Robinson because of his race.
Branch Rickey, president and manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signed (和……簽約) Robinson in 1947. He believed that Robinson not only had the skills, but the courage to face the challenge of becoming modern baseball’s first black player.
It wasn’t easy. Robinson sometimes faced boos (噓聲) from fans. But he became a star, anyway. In 1962, he became the first African-American player chosen to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award Congress can give to an American.
By breaking baseball’s color barrier (膚色障礙), Robinson opened the door for many to follow his footsteps, not only in baseball, but in other areas of life as well. After he stopped playing the game, Robinson worked as a manager for a coffee company. He wrote a newspaper column (專欄). He also started a bank.

閱讀下面短文,掌握其大意,然后從21~55各題所給的四個選項(A、B、C、D)中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

It has long been known the ancient Egyptian rulers, or pharaohs, were buried with great ceremony and lavish treasures that were to be used in the other world.

Unfortunately, until 1922 no remains of any of the pharaohs or their treasures had ever been found. In that year, however, an archaeologist named Howard Carter and his sponsor, Lord Carnavon, were at last successful. They found the tomb of King Tutankhamen, who was buried 3,200 years ago. King Tut’s tomb was the first fully preserved burial site to be uncovered in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. The two men found the tomb to contain wonderful treasures. Gold figures and magnificent furniture decorated with gold were found in the myriad of secret rooms and tunnels within the pyramid.

The only disappointment for Howard Carter came when he found that King Tut’s body was nothing but dust. Apparently a mistake had been made when the king’s remains were mummified (使成木乃伊). Carter did, however, find 143 pieces of jewelry within the mummy case, mostly made of gold and precious stones.

Actually, despite all the publicity about the remarkable finds in his tomb, Tutankhamen’s reign (統治時期) as pharaoh was short and relatively uneventful. He died when he was just 18 years old.

There is an interesting story that goes along with King Tut’s tomb. According to legend, a powerful curse was placed in it. This curse was to descend on anyone uncovering Tutankhamen’s burial place. Not very long after the discovery, Lord Carnavon, along with several of the workmen, died suddenly.
