From babies to body builders, we all have muscles. They grow, they bulge(鼓起), they stretch they stretch and sometimes they even painfully pull. But for all the work they do for us, we are still unable to crown one as "the strongest muscle."

Instead, a few muscles could claim the title, depending on how strength is measured.

If the title goes to the muscle that can exert(產生) the most force, the victor would be the soleus(小腿肚肌), according to Gray's Anatomy(解剖學). Without this muscle, we wouldn't be able to stand, walk, run or shake our bodies on the dance floor. If the soleus was not continuously pulling, we would always be falling over ourselves (although some of us tend to do that from time to time anyway).

But perhaps the title should go to the muscle that exerts the most pressure. Pressure is different from force — pressure takes into account the area over which a force is exerted. The muscle that takes the prize for delivering the greatest amount of pressure is the masseter, or the jaw muscle, according to the book "Clinical Oral Science" (Reed Educational and Professional Publishing, 1998).

In 1986, Richard Hofmann of Lake City, Fla., achieved a bite strength of 975 pounds (442 kilograms) for two seconds, setting a Guinness Record. Talk about jaw dropping! The jaw is able to clench(咬緊) and chew because of the masseter muscle.

Others may argue the muscles used in childbirth are the most powerful.

When it comes to versatility, perhaps the tongue is the strongest muscle. Its combination of elasticity(伸縮性) and forcefulness gives us the ability to speak, eat and kiss – all things very desirable on a first date. However dexterous(靈巧的) it may be though, its power does not match that of muscles such as the soleus.

If slow and steady wins the race, the heart is certainly a contender for the title. When it contracts, the muscle pumps about 2 ounces (59 milliliters) of blood, and is constantly working over a lifetime. Beating about 40 million times a year, a person's heart will beat approximately 2.5 billion times by the time of their 70th birthday.

According the passage, the underlined word “contender” in the last paragraph is closet in meaning to “           ”.

                   A.failure      B.partner     C.muscle      D.competitor

Which would be t he best title for the passage?

A.What’s the strongest muscle in the human body?

B.who is the strongest person in the world?

C.What are the functions of different muscles?

D.What are the standards of the strongest muscle?

            According to the passage,        .

A.Without the soleus, we could still stand, walk, run or shake our bodies on the dance floor

B.a few muscles could be the winners, according to different measures

C.the muscles used in childbirth are the most powerful

D.tongue is the strongest muscle for delivering the greatest amount of pressure

What would be discussed in the following paragraph?

A.Another possible strongest muscle. B.the conclusion of the strongest muscle.

C.The functions of different muscles. D.the Guinness record of strongest muscle.

            My House

My mother moved a lot when she was growing up on account of Grandpa being in the army. She hated having to adjust to new schools and make new friends. That’s why I thought she was joking when she put forward the idea of moving. But she was completely serious. “For just the two of us,” my mother said, “an apartment in the city will suit our needs much better.” Personally, I think she’s lost her mind. I guess I can understand why she would want to move, but what about me and what this house means to me?

I suppose if you looked at my house, you might think it was just another country house. But to me it is anything but standard. I moved into this house with my parents ten years ago. I can still remember that first day like it was yesterday. The first thing I noticed was the big front yard. To me it seemed like an ocean of grass—I couldn’t wait to dive in. The backyard was full of gnarled (扭曲的, 粗糙的) and scary trees that talk on windy nights. But I grew to like them and the shadows they cast in my room. My father and I even built a small tree house, where I often go to remember all the wonderful times we had before Father’s death.

This house is special—maybe only to me—but special nevertheless. It’s the little seemingly insignificant things that make this house so special to me: the ice-cold tile floors that make me tremble on midnight snack runs; the smell of my father’s pipe that still exists; the towering bookcases of my mother; the view outside my bedroom window.

This house holds too many memories, memories which would be lost if we gave it up.

Why did the author’s mother decide to move?

            A. Because she hated the countryside.

            B. Because Grandpa was on constant move.

            C. Because Dad’s death made her lose her mind.

            D. Because she thought a city flat more fit for them.

What impressed the author when she first moved into the house?

            A. The tree house.  B. The big trees.    C. The cold floors.        D. The green grass.

How did the author let us feel that the house was special to her?

            A. By arguing whether the house was standard.

            B. By explaining why the house suited their needs. k.&s~5*u

            C. By describing the small things related to her house.

            D. By comparing the differences between country and city life.

My mother moved a lot when she was growing up because of   ________.

            A. Grandpa being in the army.  B.their family’s liking moving

            C. the life’s need             D. Mother’s work

John Blanchard was studying the crowd making their way through the station. He was looking for the girl with a rose whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t.

When reading a book in a Florida library a year before, John became interested not in the contents of the book, but in the notes penciled in the margin. The handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and beautiful mind. He discovered the former owner's name in the front of the book: Miss Hollis Maynell.

He located her address and wrote a letter introducing himself. The next day he was shipped overseas to serve in the army. During the next year, they grew to know each other through the mail and their friendship developed. John requested a photograph, but she refused, saying if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return home, their first meeting was suggested — 7:00 p.m. at the Grand Central Station in New York.

She wrote, “You’ll recognize me by the red rose I wear on my coat.” So now John was in the station to meet the girl with a rose.

As a pretty and slim girl in green came over, John noticed her blue eyes like flowers in spring. He walked directly towards her, entirely forgetting she was not wearing a rose. As John came closer to her, he saw another woman with a red rose stood nearby. Well past 40, this woman had graying hair done under a worn hat. Seeing the girl in green walk quickly away, John felt as if he were split in two. He desired to follow that girl, but longed for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and supported him.

The woman looked gentle and sensible. John went to her, saying, “I’m Captain John Blanchard. You must be Miss Maynell. I am glad to meet you here. May I take you to dinner?”

She replied with a smile, “I don’t know what this is about. But the lady in green who just went by, begged me to wear this rose on my coat. She said if you asked me out to dinner, I’d tell you she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”

John was eager to know the former owner of the book because he______.

            B. was impressed by the notes written by its owner

            C. wanted to improve his handwriting

            D. wanted to discuss the book with her

What happened to John after getting in touch with Miss Hollis Maynell?

               A. He served in the army abroad.

               B. He went overseas for vacation.

               C. He went on a business trip in New York.

               D. He visited Miss Maynell.

What do we know about the woman with a rose?

               A. She was Miss Maynell’s close friend.

               B. She was a waitress in the big restaurant.

               C. She was probably a passerby.

               D. She was paid to meet John at the Station.
