SINGAPOREAN singer JJ Lam,29,admitted that this March couldn’t be better:He outshined Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou and bagged four awards at the China Original Music Pop Chart Award(中國原創音樂流行榜) ceremony, including the most coveted(最渴望得到的)best male singer title.

Yet the trophies(獎杯)were only part of an exciting month.Knowing that he has an O1ympic champion fan,Lam was so happy that he prepared his own gifts for Zhou Yang, the speed skating gold medalist:an autographed(簽名的)CD and a Mickey Mouse doll.He even invited Zhou to his birthday party on March 26 after Zhou told him that it was a great pity she had had to miss Lam's Beijing concert last year.

After finishing high school,Lam joined the army. On the small island where he was stationed,he wrote dozens of songs.Still, his ambition of one day being a pop singer seemed an unrealistic dream to others.“Later, when my former officers heard my songs being played on the radio, they couldn’t believe it.” he said.

Not that the road to success wasn't a rocky one. When Lam went to Taiwan to develop his career, he felt lonely at first. He started playing computer games again.“I indulged(沉溺) myself in games day and night," he said.“But I came to realize that I mustn’t 1et the games take over my 1ife.I had to go out,see people and meet life’s challenges head on.”

A handsome middleaged man walked quietly into the cafe and sat down. Before he ordered,he couldn’t help but notice a group of younger men at the table next to him. It was obvious they were making fun of something about him and it wasn’t until he remembered he was wearing a small pink ribbon(絲帶) on the lapel of his suit that he became aware of what the joke was all about.
The man pretended not to notice it,but the whisper and laughter began to get to him. He looked one of the rude young men straight into the eye, placed his hand beneath the ribbon and asked,“This?”
With that the young men all began to laugh out loud. The man he spoke to said,“Hey,sorry, man, but we were just commenting on how pretty your little pink ribbon looks against your blue jacket!”
The middleaged man calmly invited the joker to come over to his table, and politely seated him. As uncomfortable as he was, the young guy had to, not really sure why. In a soft voice, the middleaged man said, “I wear this ribbon to bring awareness about breast cancer. I wear it in my mother’s honor.”
“Oh, sorry. She died of breast cancer?”
“No, she didn’t. She’s alive and well. But her breasts nourished me as a baby, and were a soft resting place for my head when I was scared or lonely as a little boy. I’m very grateful for my mother’s breasts, and her health.”
“Umm,” the young replied “yeah.”
“And I wear this ribbon to honor my wife” the man continued.
“And she’s okay, too?”the young guy asked.
“Oh, yes. She’s fine. Her breasts have been a great source of loving pleasure for both of us,and with them she nurtured and nourished our daughter 23 years ago. I’m grateful for my wife’s breasts, and her health.”
“Uh, huh. And I guess you wear it to honor your daughter, also?”
“No. It’s too late to honor my daughter by wearing it now...”
Shaken and ashamed, the young guy said, “Oh, I’m so sorry, mister.”
“So, in my daughter’s memory, too, I proudly wear this little ribbon, which allows me the opportunity to enlighten others. And here...”With this,he reached in his pocket and handed the young man a little pink ribbon. The young guy looked at it, slowly raised his head and asked, “...?”

第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題,每小題2分,滿分40分)
閱讀下面的短文,從A,B,C,D四個選項中,選出最佳選項
My elder brother Steve, in the absence of my father who died when I was six, gave me important lessons in values that helped me grow into an adult. For instance, Steve taught me to face the results of my behavior. Once when I returned in tears from a Saturday baseball game, it was Steve who took the time to ask me what happened. When I explained that my baseball had soared through Mrs. Holt’s basement window, breaking the glass with a crash, Steve encouraged me to confess(坦白) to her. After all, I should have been playing in the park down Fifth Street and not in the path between buildings. Although my knees knocked as I explained to Mrs. Holt, I offered to pay for the window from my pocket money if she would return my ball. I also learned from Steve that personal property is a sacred thing. After I found a shiny silver pen in my fifth-grade classroom, I wanted to keep it, but Steve explained that it might be important to someone else. He reminded me of how much I’d hate to lose to someone else the small dog my father carved from a piece of wood. I returned the pen to my teacher, Mrs. Davids, and still remembered the smell of her perfume as she patted me on my shoulder.
Yet of all the instructions Steve gave me, his respect for life is the most vivid in my mind. When I was twelve I killed an old brown bird in the yard with a BB gun. Excited with my accuracy, I screamed to Steve to come from thehouse to take a look. I shall never forget the way he stood for a long moment and stared at the bird on the ground. Then in a dead, quiet voice, he asked, “Did it hurt you first, Mark?” I didn’t know what to answer. He continued with his eyes firm, “The only time you should even think of hurting a living thing is if it hurts you first. And then you think a long, long time. “ I really felt terrible then, but that moment stands out as the most important lesson my brother taught me.
56. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The relationship between Mark and Steve
B. The important lesson Mark learned in school
C. Steve’s important role in Mark’s growing process.
D. Mark and Steve’s respect for living things.
57. It can be inferred from the passage that when Mark confessed to Mrs. Holt, ____.
A. he felt surprised                B. he was light-hearted
C. he felt frightened               D. he behaved bravely
58. In the story about the pen, which of the following lessons did Steve teach his brother?
A. Respect for personal property.
B. Respect for life.
C. Sympathy for people with problems.
D. The value of honesty.
59. Which of the follow is true according to the passage?
A. Mark was still a boy when he wrote this passage.
B. Even if a living thing hurts you, you should not kill it without hesitation
C. When a living thing hurts you, you should kill it.
D. Mark lost the small dog his father raised.

A man walks into a doctor’s office. He has a cucumber (黃瓜) up his nose, a carrot in his left ear and a banana in his right ear. “What's the matter with me?” he asks the doctor. The doctor replies, “You’re not eating properly.”

This is a popular joke among British school children. It shows Britain's famous dry and satirical (諷刺的) way of seeing the funny side of life. People say this unique sense of humor is one of Britain's national characteristics.

The British sense of humor is different from other countries because it is often more negative. When it comes to making the British laugh, there is nothing that works better than a socially inappropriate (不恰當的) joke. It reflects the culture where mocking (嘲弄) is part of everyday life.

While most Britons don’t take these jokes too seriously, foreigners often don’t understand them. A recent survey found that most foreigners who visited Britain think the British are “unfriendly and have almost no sense of humor”.

Are the British just not as funny as they think they are? Leo McKinstry, a British journalist, thinks the British are funny. “Accusing the British of having no sense of humor is like telling Rolls-Royce (勞斯萊斯) that its cars are cheap and not good in quality,” he says.

56. What does the doctor actually mean by the remark “You’re not eating properly”?

A. What you have had is the cause of these problems.   B. You are not having the right food.

C. You don’t eat the way people usually do.           D. You eat with the wrong cutlery. ( 餐具 )

57. The word “dry” in Paragraph 2 means ________.

A. without water or liquid inside                 B. special and popular among school children
