Collecting information about application (申請表)are closely connected, However, filling out an appheation fornt is much easier because you have total control and have enough time to think and plan.

That you are given a form to fill out does not necessarily mean that you have to answer all the questions in it. If the form contains unclear questions or lerms and conditions, you can make some changes  before signing (簽約)it, or refuse to answer some of the questions. What you must realize is that those terms and conditions have been written by highly paid lawyers. Each word is important, or it would not be there;and you can be sure that there is not anything there that is written with your interests in mind.

I know what I speak of because, as a lawyer for Litton Industries. I wrote the terms and conditions that were printed on the back of order forms, I wrote the most tiring terms and conditions anyone has ever seen. Still, 90 percent of the buyers would just sign on them without questioning anything, If anyone questiones them. We would reach an agreement on something that was acceptable to both siders.

So when you see a preprinted application that contains questions or terms and conditions, read it all and read it slowly. If you don’t like something, you can simply change the parts you don’t like, Remember that everything can be settled by discussion. To what degree it can be settled depends on your position(立場),of course, and that is something only you can determine.

A.everything in a form must be read carefully

B.questions in a form must be answered

With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物種). That’s similar to what Texas A&M University researchers have been undertaking(負責) for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”.

Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M’S College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure(過程) could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy(having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

1. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to_______.

A. make effort to clone the endangered pandas

A. available panda eggs                             B. host animals

C. qualified researchers                             D. enough money

3. The best title for the passage may be _______.

B. The First Cloned Panda in the World

C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas

D. China — the Native Place of Pandas Forever

4. From the passage we know that _______.

科目:高中英語 來源:2012-2013學年湖北省荊門市高三元月調考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Greg Woodburn, a student at the University of Southern California, spends a lot of time cleaning sneakers he collected. But soon the shoes will be sent to poor children in the United States and 20 other countries, thanks to Woodburn’s Share Our Soles (S.O.S.) charity.

A high school track star in the town of Ventura, California, Woodburn was treated in hospital for months with knee and hip injuries.

“I started thinking about the health benefits, the friendship and the confidence I got from running,” he says, “And I realized there are children who don’t even have shoes.”

Woodburn gathered up his old sneakers, then asked his friends to donate. His goal was to have 100 pairs by Christmas this year. When he collected more than 500 pairs, he decided to turn the shoe drive into a year-round endeavor.

Back then, the sneakers came from donation boxes at the YMCA and the local sporting goods store and from door-to-door pickups.Woodburn has now set up collection boxes at two high schools, city gym and recreation center. He has started accepting adult sizes and sandals. So far, S.O.S has collected and donated more than 3,000 pairs.

Woodburn has cleaned all the shoes. After sorting the shoes by size, Woodburn selects the good shoes for the washing machine and the worn-out ones for recycling.

To ship the footwear, Woodburn teamed with Sports Gift, a nonprofit organization that provides soccer and baseball equipment to children around the world.Keven Baxter, founder and president, says, “We’d send kids balls and shoes.I've heard that for many of these kids, these old sneakers are the only shoes they had. They wear them to school and to do sports. So Greg’s running shoes were a nice addition for us.”

For many recipients, the shoes represent opportunity. Two young boys in Southern California attended school on alternate days because they shared a pair of shoes. They were too big for one boy and too small for the other. Thanks to S.O.S., each brother received his own pair of shoes. The boys now attend school daily and enjoy their learning. When they graduate, they say, they will help a stranger, just as Woodburn helped them.

A.The benefits from playing sports.

B.News about some poor children.

A.By sending them by mail.

B.Many children need Greg’s old sneakers.

C.Greg’s running shoes are the best gifts for children.

D.International organization should provide more help.

請認真閱讀下列短文,并根據所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰當的單詞。

注意:1. 每空格1個單詞。2.所有答案寫在答題紙指定位置,否則不計分。

Searching for the truth

Collecting and writing news is like researching in history: the best information comes from those who were there at the time. So if' we want to study the history of China in the sixth century AD, we look at the writings of the people who lived then. They are called the primary sources because they tell us what it was like to live then. People at a much later date who write about the same events are called the secondary sources. For example, when we read the original writings of Jia Sixie on agriculture, we are reading a primary source; when we read about Jia Sixie in our textbook we are reading secondary source because the passage was written about him and his ideas many years after he died.

When we make news, we use primary and secondary sources. We can see this most clearly in TV programmes. As we watch the news on TV, the person presenting the programme in the studio is the secondary source( because he tells us about the news) and the reporter in Iraq or Washington is the primary source (because he is telling us about what is actually happening there). Without these reporters acting as primary sources, you would never find out what really happened in a war, earthquake, sports meeting, concert or festival. These reporters explain what is happening, so we have a clearer idea of what is going on there. They often take photographers with them who act as primary source by giving pictures of events.

In a newspaper, the position is different because these two roles are often combined. This means a reporter who investigates a story may be the same person who writes it. If this happens, the reporter is both the primary and the secondary source. But the photographer who works with him/her is still a primary source.

One of the reasons that it is important to separate primary and secondary sources is that they help us to decide what is a fact and what is an opinion. A fact is something that everybody agrees has happened. An opinion is somebody's idea of what happened. So facts and opinions are often mixed in any report, whether in a newspaper or on TV.

What have you learnt from the above passage?

Primary Source

Primary sources are the writing of' the people who lived at (1)________time and offer an inside view of a particular event.

Secondary source

Secondary sources are the writings of the people who write about the same events at a much later date with explanation and analysis (2)_________ on primary sources.

News on TV

The TV (3)__________ in the studio is the secondary source while the reporter on the (4) ____________ is the primary source.

News in a newspaper

A newspaper reporter can be both primary and secondary source if he collects the information and then (5) ___________ the news.  But the photographer(6) _________ with the reporter is always a primary source.

Fact

A fact is something that everybody agrees has happened. In other (7)____________, it is something that is (8) ___________.

Opinion

An opinion is somebody's idea of what (9)___________ on.

Conclusion

Primary and secondary sources are both important for (10)_______ the truth.
