閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文后面的要求答題(請(qǐng)注意答題后的字?jǐn)?shù)要求)

[1] If you are applying for an American higher education, you probably dream of getting into an Ivy League (常青藤聯(lián)盟) university. The eight schools with the best reputations attract top students from the United States and many other countries. However, on average, the Ivy League schools accept less than 15 percent of applicants. And with the applicants growing in size year on year, it is becoming more and more difficult _________.

[2] So how can you give yourself the best chance of admission?

[3]Having a high school grade point average (GPA) in the top 10 percent of your class and being ranked among the top few students dramatically betters your chances. But although GPA and SAT scores are important, they only tell admission deans(主任)part of the story.

[4] The whole admissions process will single out (挑選出) from a large pool of academically strong applicants the unique individuals. They stand out because they have shown in their interviews a range of virtues (優(yōu)點(diǎn)) expected of these universities.Take Harvard for example.Although there is no guarantee of admission, the school judges applicants based on 15 additional criteria.

[5] Intellectual curiosity (求知欲) comes first tor almost all admission deans.Schools look to such students because they believe their peers find them stimulating(激勵(lì)人的)inside and outside the classroom.

[6] Leadership also weighs heavily. The school would rather see an applicant who takes on additional responsibility in one or two areas where he or she is good at, rather than one who is merely "very good" academically. This can mean the class presidency(主席職務(wù)), leading the cheerleading team or being the officer of a student union.

[7] Whether a person has personal warmth and cares about others counts a lot with the admission deans.Writing an essay on a personal experience, like a summer spent raising funds for the earthquake victims or teaching in a local school, can show that a person has qualities in addition to academic experience.

What is the purpose of the passage? (no more than 15 words)

Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word“obey”is hardly exact as a description of the eager and delighted co- operation(合作) usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gestures and by making questioning noises.

Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It’s agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves out as particular expression like delight, pain, friendliness and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self - imitation(自我模仿)leads out to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.

It is a problem we need to get our teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will. change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use, at seven months, of“ mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at another time for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself. I doubt, however , whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of his ability in an attempt to teach new words.

Children who start speaking late ________

  A. may have problems with their listening

  B. probably do not hear enough language spoken around them

  C. usually pay close attention to what they hear

  D. often take a long time in learning to listen properly

  A baby’s first noises are ________ .

  A. an expression of his moods and feelings

  B. an early form of language

  C. an imitation of the speech of adults

  D. a sign that he means to tell you something

The problem of deciding at what point a baby’s imitation can be considered as speech ________ .

  A. is important because words have different meanings for different people

  B. is not especially important because the change takes place gradually

  C. is one that should be ignored(忽略)because children’s use of words is often meaningless

  D. is one that can never be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with age

The speaker implies that ________ .

  A. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitation

  B. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quickly

  C. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speak

  D. patents can never hope to teach their children new sounds

High-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast the bun. High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make for better-tasting meals.

Most people get their news from high-tech sources like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs. However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip the rest.

Other high-tech timesavers have similar disadvantages. For examples, most people use the phone or e-mail to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you don’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you word-process a homework assignment instead of handwriting it, you can check your spelling electronically and put in fancy headings. However, some students are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The writer likes high-tech cooking.

B. Low-tech cooking produces better-tasting meals.

C. High-tech news programs always keep you reading what is important to you.

D. Handwritten homework is better than word-processed homework.

How does the writer feel about high-tech tool?

A. Better late than never.      B. Easy come, easy go.

C. Every coin has two sides.   D. Learn to walk before you run.

What is the main subject discussed in the text?

A. High-tech vs. low-tech.

B. Advantages vs. disadvantages.

C. Newspapers and magazines vs. television and the Internet.

D. Word-processing vs. handwriting.

A letter to Edward,a columnist

Dear Mr. Expert,

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive(虐待) home. I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I've achieved.

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine—so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes—it makes the place feel comfortable and warm—but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隱私)?

                                                                                                                    Joan

Edward’s reply to Joan

Dear Joan,

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(氣氛), you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict(沖突)you grew up with—or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company(陪伴) but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over. ”

                                                                                                                    Edward

59. We can learn from the first letter that Joan ___________.

  A. takes pride in her friends

B. lives away from her parents

  C. knows Mr. Expert quite well

D. hates her parents very much

60. We can infer from the first letter that __________.

  A. Joan thinks her friends more important than her privacy

   B. Joan doesn’t like the parties at all

   C. Joan’s friends visit her more often than expected

   D. Joan dislikes the boyfriends her friends bring over

61. In Mr. Expert’s opinion, the reason why Joan can’t tell her friends her feelings is that _________.

  A. she is afraid of hurting her friends

B. she does not understand true friendship

   C. her family experience stops her from doing so

D. she does not put her needs first

62. The second letter suggests that Mr. Expert __________.

  A. is concerned about Joan’s problem

B. warns Joan not to quarrel with her friends

   C. encourages Joan to be brave enough

   D. advises Joan on how to refuse people
