Researchers at the University of Bedforshire have developed a new technique for powering electronic device(裝置). The system, developed by Professor Ben Allen at the Centre for Wireless Research, uses radio(無線電) waves as power.

Believed to be a world first, the team claims it could eventually eliminate (or get rid of )the need for conventional batteries. The university has now filed a patent application to secure the only rights to the technique.

Professor Allen and his team have created a system to use medium wave frequencies to replace batteries in small everyday devices like clocks and remote controls.

The new technique uses the “waste” energy of radio waves and has been developed as part of the university’s research into “power harvesting”. Professor Allen said that as radio waves have energy―like light waves, sound waves or wind waves―then, in theory, these waves could be used to create power.

“The emerging(新興的)area of power harvesting technology promises to reduce our reliance on conventional batteries,” he said. “It’s really exciting way of taking power from sources other than what we would normally think of.”

The team is now waiting for the results of the patent application to secure recognition of the technique. Professor Allen said that the team’s achievements had all been done in their “spare time”. “Our next stage is to try and raise some real funds so that we can take this work forward and make a working prototype(模型)and maybe partner up with the right people and take this to a full product in due course,” he said.

“Power harvesting has a really important part in our future, because, just in this country, we dispose of somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 tonnes of batteries in landfill(垃圾填理)sites every single year-that is toxic chemicals going into the ground.”

He added that development of the product could also be “commercially beneficial”. “The market for this is several billion pounds. We’ve seen market predictions for 2020 which have these kinds of figures, so there’s a lot of commercial potential in this area,” he said.

Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Bedfordshire, Professor Carsten Maple, said, “This type of work is a reflection of the university’s growing reputation and experience in conducting innovative(創新的)research.”

1.From the text we know the new technique for powering electronic devices_____.

A.can be applied to all electronic devices.

B.uses radio waves to create power.

C.has replaced conventional batteries.

D.produces many toxic chemicals.

2.According to Professor Allen, power harvesting technology______.

A.makes every use of radio waves.

B.takes power from usual sources.

C.reduces our dependency on conventional batteries.

D.aims at huge commercial benefits.

3.What can we learn about Professor Allen and his team from the text?

A.They have made use of radio waves in their daily life.

B.They have raised a big fund to support their research.

C.They have gained a patent for their new technology.

D.They mainly did their research in their spare time.

4.What is Professor Carsten Maple’s attitude toward the new technique?

A.Critical.

B.Favorable.

C.Conservative.

D.Negative.

5.What is the text mainly about?

A.A new technique to create power.

B.A crisis concerning conventional batteries.

C.Some special sources of power.

D.The development of power harvesting.

LOS ANGELES--- Two lost hikers who survived three nights in mountains thanks to supplies at a campsite of another hiker who disappeared last year described their suffering, saying they had “the real special thank” for the man who is probably dead.

The couple, Allen, 24, and Brandon Day, 28, were in Southern California for an important conference. They got lost on Saturday west of Palm Springs after wandering off a trail during what was supposed to be a day hike.

Prepared only for a brief hike, they wore light jackets and tennis shoes and had no food, spare clothing or mobile phone. With night closing in, they took shelter in a small cave and spent the night sleepless, freezing and hungry.

On Monday, they discovered a campsite in a dead valley. There was a sleeping mat, a backpack, a disposable razor(一次性剃刀), a spoon and tennis shoes. Day and Allen were delighted, thinking someone there could help them find the way out. But later they realized the place was deserted.

They found identification showing the camper was Donovan, 60, a retired social worker from Virginia. They learned later in his diary that he was an experienced hiker and he disappeared on May 2, 2005, in icy weather.

They found articles in his backpack: a warm sweater for Allen, dry socks for Day and matches. They lit a small signal fire to attract a helicopter crew in the distance, but the crew did not see them.

On Tuesday morning, Day created “a really big smoke signal” that finally attracted a helicopter crew. They were examined at a hospital and had only bruises(擦傷).

“We feel great. We’re thankful. We feel like we’ve been given a second chance,” said Day, who expressed that they wouldn’t give up hiking even after this experience.

1. The passage most probably appears in ________.

 A. To go for a short hiking in mountains.    B. To search for the hiker missing a year ago.

 C. To attend an important conference.      D. To enjoy the scenery of Palm Springs.

3. Which of the things the couple found helped them the most?

A. Tennis shoes.      B. A sleeping mat.        C. a warm sweater.     D. Matches.

4. Which of the following statements is TURE?

A. The couple realized the campsite was deserted the moment they found it.

B. The couple at first thought the person in the camp could help them out.

C. It was the icy weather that led to Donovan’s disappearance and death.

D. This experience would prevent the couple hiking again in future.

(BBC)The "father of the personal computer" who kick-started the careers of Microsoft founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen has died at the age of 68. Dr Henry Edward Roberts was the inventor of the Altair 8800, a machine that led to the home computer age.

Gates and Allen contacted Dr Roberts after seeing the machine on the front cover of a magazine and offered to write software for it. The program was known as Altair-Basic, the foundation of Microsoft's business. "Ed was willing to take a chance on us - two young guys interested in computers , and we have always been thankful to him," the Microsoft founders said in a statement.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak told technology website CNET that Dr Roberts had taken " a critically important step that led to everything we have today". [來源:學,科,網Z,X,X,K]

Dr Roberts was the founder of Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), originally set up to sell electronics parts to model rocket hobbyists. The company went on to sell electronic calculator parts, but was soon overshadowed by bigger firms.

Amongst those interested in the machine were Paul Allen and Bill Gates. The pair contacted Dr Roberts, offering to write software that would help people program the machine. The pair finally moved to Albuquerque - the home of MITS - where they founded Micro-Soft, to develop their software.

Dr Roberts sold his company in 1977. He died in hospital on 1 April after a long period of pneumonia.(肺炎)
