In 1986, when Monty Reed was a member of the Army Rangers (黑鷹突擊隊), he had an accident.
"It was a night jump, and we were jumping low," he recalls. "We were training. Somebody got too close
to my parachute (降落傘)."The parachute below blocked Reed's air and his parachute failed to open.
Reed crashed a hundred feet to the ground, breaking his back in five places.
The next morning, Reed could not move. "Doctors said it was likely that I would never walk again."
Reed stared out of his hospital window, wondering what the future would be like. It was the saddest
moment of his life. "The experts are telling me my body doesn't work! What am I supposed to do?" he
thought.
To distract (轉(zhuǎn)移注意力) himself, he picked up a book: Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers. The
science-fiction describes a set of man-made muscles that would allow people to carry 2,000 pounds. He
thought that if he could build something like that, it might be able to lift him out of his wheelchair. So he
began his project and finally succeeded in building a set of robot legs. Several years later, he made an
amazing recovery and was able to get up and walk away from his wheelchair. He even jumped out of an
airplane again to celebrate.
Reed wanted to do something for others with the second chance that life had given him. He has now
perfected the robot legs that can get the injured, the elderly and the paralyzed (癱瘓的) out of their
wheelchairs. Now he has started his own company to make the legs. "I've seen them compete in
marathons and go swimming and mountain climbing," he said. "So never give up!"
1. Monty started to read Starship Troopers to ______.
A. create a new kind of wheelchair for himself
B. discover how to make man-made muscles
C. learn how to jump out of an airplane
D. stop himself from thinking about his pain
2. Which of the following is TRUE about Monty?
A. He didn't lose heart in the face of difficulty.
B. He is fond of reading science fiction.
C. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
D. He didn't believe what the doctors said.
3. We can learn from the passage that Monty's goal is to ______.
A. become a famous writer like Robert Heinlein.
B. return to the Army Rangers and continue with his jumps.
C. compete in games and marathons and go swimming.
D. help more patients in wheelchairs to recover.

In 2006,I spent 3 glorious weeks in South Africa. It was my first time traveling on the African continent and truly each day was filled with one adventure after another. That was the craziest and the most
dangerous experience I have ever had.

In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most
people like traveling by car or by air.
Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is
about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied
trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in
personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a
bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train.
Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years,
the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers
has increased,it is still very small now. In countries such as France,Germany,or Japan, more people
use trains.
There are several reasons why many people __________________________.
Firstly,Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains.
These highways connect all major cities in America. Secondly, many travelers like to be independent.
When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between
major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel.
In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, trave
l from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over
long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to
fly. For these people saving time is the most important thing
.

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition of each new
skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing.
It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up
dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage.
A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn
to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a
child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm
for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be
especially strict in money matters, others are severe over times of coming home at night or
punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and
the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very
important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation
for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they
are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (說教),their children may grow confused
and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they
have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their
morals can be a dangerous disappointment.
1. Eagerly watching the child's acquisition of new skills         .
A. should be avoided
B. is universal among parents
C. sets up dangerous states of worry in the child
D. will make him lose interest in learning new things
2. In the process of children's learning new skills parents          .
A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read
B. should not expect too much of them
C. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own
D. should create as many learning opportunities as possible
3. The second paragraph mainly tells us that         .
A. parents should be strict with their children
B. parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the community
C. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children alone
D. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation.
4. The underlined word"precept" in Para.3 probably means"         "
A. idea
B. punishment
C. behaviour
D. instruction
5. In moral matters, parents should         .
A. observe the rules themselves
B. be aware of the marked difference between adults and children
C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality
D. consistently ensure the security of their children
