E
Researchers have just offered evidence in a study that says obesity appears to spread through social ties, much like a virus. When one person gains weight, their close friends often follow, but the finding might also offer hope.
If friends help make obesity acceptable, then might also be influential in losing the fat. The researchers note that support groups are already an effective tool in dealing with other socially influenced problems, like alcoholism.
The findings appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, The researchers used information collected from 12,000 people. It was collected between 1971 and 2003 as part of the Framingham Heart Study.
The information was highly detailed. There was even contact information for close friends of the people in the study.
The researchers examined more than 40,000 social ties. They found that a person’s chances of becoming severely overweight increased by 57% if a friend had become obese.
Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School was a lead investigator in the study. He says there is a direct causal relationship between a person getting fat and being followed in weight gain by a friend.
The study found that the sex of the friends was also an influence. In same-sex friendships, a person had a 70% increased risk of becoming obese. Men had a 44% increased risk of becoming obese after weight gain in brothers. In sisters, it was 67%. Between husbands and wives, it was a little less than 40%.
The researchers also considered the effect of where people lived in relation to each other. James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, was the other lead investigator. He says a friend who lives a few hundred kilometers away has as much influence as one in the same neighborhood. He says the study demonstrates the need to consider that a major part of people’s health is tied to their social connections.
Both investigators say their research shows that obesity is not just a private medical issue, but a public health problem.
67. What does the underlined sentence in Para2.mean?
A. Obesity has a negative influence on a close friend.
B. Friends might also play a part in losing weight.
C. One might have a positive influence on one’s friend.
D. Friends usually don’t follow each other to lose weight.
68. Who is mostly likely to gain weight?
A. A man who has a fat brother.
B. A husband who has a fat wife.
C. A wife who has a fat husband.
D. A woman who a fat female friend.
69. Which of the following statements doesn’t the passage agree with?
A. You are sure to lose weight if you have a skinny friend.
B. If one gains weight, one’s friends are likely to get fat.
C. A person’s health is closely linked with his /her social relationship.
D. Even if the friend lives far away, the influence still remains.
70. The reason why the study involves both family members and friends is that _____.
A. researchers fail to find a more different sample
B. researchers have different ideas for family members and friends
C. researchers can meet these people regularly
D. researchers can compare the results

C

The world record for fastest text message typing is held by a 21-year-old college student from Utah, but his flexible fingers could mean serious injury later on. Most adults aged 18-21 prefer texting over e-mail or phone calls, and ergonomics(人體工程學) researchers are starting to wonder whether it’s putting the younger generation at risk for some overuse injuries – once reserved for older adults who have spent years in front of a computer. Judith Gold, an assistant professor of Epidemiology at the College of Health Professions and Social Work, thinks this might be the case. At this year’s annual meeting of the American Public Health Association, she presented previous research which suggested that among college students, the more they texted, the more pain they had in their neck and shoulders.

“What we’ve seen so far is very similar to what we see with office workers who’ve spent most of their time at a computer,” said Gold, who directs the Ergonomics and Work Physiology Laboratory. “The way the body is positioned for texting – stationary(不動的)shoulders and back with rapidly moving fingers – is similar to the position for typing on a computer.”

Text messaging is a fairly new technology, Gold says, so this is a new area of research among ergonomists. “But given the similarities in body position, findings from research on overuse injuries from computers could be applied here,” she said.

Current studies on computer use show office workers have the tendency to get involved in such diseases as tunnel syndrome, bursitis, and tendonitis.

In Gold’s lab, she and her team use tools like special cameras, motion analysis and heart rate monitors to study the body’s position in several job-related situations. But given the popularity of text messaging among young adults, Gold wants to explore further into the physiological effects of this latest form of communication.

“Looking around our campus, you see every student on their cell phones, typing away,” she said. “It’s the age group that texts the most, so it’s important to know what the health effects may be in order to learn whether it will cause long term damage.”

64. Which of the following are ergonomics researchers not sure about?

A. A 21-year-old college student holds the world record for fastest text message typing.

B. Most adults aged 18-21 prefer texting over e-mail or phone calls.

C. Overuse of computer will cause injuries to health.

D. Over text message will cause long term damage to health.

65. Current studies on computer use will lead people to believe that ______.

A. office workers are good at texting messages

B. office workers tend to suffer from some kinds of physical problems

C. texting messages seriously damage people’s health

D. e-mails and phone calls will be forbidden

66. When texting messages, college students will ______.

A. keep moving shoulders and back

B. move fingers very fast with shoulders and back still

C. spend most of their time at a computer

D. look around their campus

67. The most suitable title of this passage may be ______.

A. Over text messaging could cause shoulder and neck pain

B. Overuse of computers could cause diseases

C. A new world record for fastest text message typing

D. A new scientific discovery by ergonomics researchers

My father came to the United States as a Ukrainian immigrant (移民) when he was 14 years old. Unable to speak English but willing to do anything to succeed, he learned the language, became a barber, and opened up his own business in a small town. He put my sister and me through college during a time when most people thought that women didn’t need an education and that they should be satisfied with getting married and having children. He gave us values and ambition. But this story didn’t really start until my father was 60 years old.

I was preparing to get married and my father was attempting to practice the polke, a must at any Ukrainian wedding. But he just couldn’t do it! He had lost mobility in his leg and was diagnosed with a brain tumor (腫瘤). After surgery, this energetic, hard-working man was forced to retire as a result of significant paralysis (癱瘓) in his right arm and leg. My dad had always worked two jobs and spent his spare time working around the house. Now that kind of life came to a sudden stop. Yet never once did he complain. He bought rubber balls and spent his days trying to regain his hand mobility by squeezing those balls over and over.

After his last operation, he chatted with me pleasantly in the hospital room until a nurse flew into the room, waving her finger at me, and yelling, “You’d better tell your father to stay in bed. He is paralyzed and will never walk again. He needs to stop trying to get out of bed and accept the fact that he can’t walk now or ever. I am sick of picking him up and you’d better warn him to stay put!” My father smiled. He spent a great deal of time on the floor that year, but he eventually got up and walked.

My father lived nineteen more years after that operation. He bought himself a motor scooter (小型摩托車) and spent years zipping around the streets of Philadelphia. He was proud, free, and always smiling.

3.The author’s father used the rubber balls to         .

    A. kill his too much spare time         B. relieve himself from work pressure

    C. get his hand’s function back            D. recover from his operation

4. Which of the following can be used to describe the author’s father?

    A. Perfect.         B. Strong-minded.           C. Creative.            D. Impractical.

5. What can we learn from the text?

    A. Love can do wonders.             B. Failure is the mother of success.

    C. A father’s love is most valuable.       D. Never give up on your life.
