My wife and I spent two weeks in London last year. We went there in the autumn. We think it is the best season to visit England. The weather is usually quite good and there aren’t too many travelers in October.

We stayed in a small hotel in the West End. It was convenient(方便的) as we did most of our sightseeing on foot. Taxis were too expensive, we couldn’t understand the bus routes(paths), and my wife didn’t like travelling on the underground. She said it made her feel shut in.

We went to look at the places which all travelers see. We saw Bucking-ham Palace, the National Gallery(美術館) and Piccadily Circus. We went shopping in Oxford Street and spent too much money. What we liked most, was going to the theatre. We don’t have the chance to see such wonderful plays at home. A lot of people say English food is very bad. We didn’t think so. It’s true that most of the restaurants are French or Italian or Chinese, so we had some very good meals.

In fact, we enjoyed our holiday so much that we have already booked(預定)again for this year. We’re going to take our umbrellas, though, I’m sure we’ll need them sometimes.

I cry easily. I cried when a boy in the film suffered from an incurable disease. I cried when an athlete broke a world record.

While my wife went ahead into our friend' s house, I stepped into the street.
“Hey,” I said, “this parking space belongs to that guy.” I gestured towards the man ahead, who was looking back angrily. At that moment I was feeling pretty manly.

The CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs’ story about death
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”
Remembering that I’ ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ ve ever encountered(遇到)to help me make the big choice in life.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that was incurable, and that I would live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is my doctors’code for preparing yourself to die.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. I was completely in despair. Later that evening, I had another biopsy(活組織檢查)and my wife told me that tumor turned to be curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’ m fine now.
This was the closest I’ ve been to facing death. To tell the truth, no one wants to die. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. It clears out the old to make room for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.
Your time is so limited that you shouldn’ t waste it repeating someone else’ s life. Don’ t be trapped by dogma(教條)—which is living with the results of other people’ s thinking. Don’ t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart. It somehow already knows what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
【小題1】The doctor advised the author to go home and get his affairs in order because_________.

A.he had to rest at home
B.his disease was not serious at all
C.his disease couldn’ t be cured
D.he had to wait for the result of the test
【小題2】How did the author feel after the diagnosis?
A.AngryB.ExcitedC.OptimisticD.Hopeless
【小題3】What does the author think of death?
A.He thinks it is nothing to be scared of.
B.He thinks it is not the end of life.
C.He thinks it is impossible to avoid.
D.He thinks it is the beginning of a new life
【小題4】In the author’ s opinion, we should ____________.
A.follow others’ advice
B.take no notice of diseases
C.take exercise and keep healthy
D.have the courage to follow our heart

One hot night last July, when our new baby wouldn’t or couldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of: a warm bottle, songs gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill of the hours till dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, and his little eyes focused brightly on the tube. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi's forty-fifth birthday.

My wife and I heard none of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.

I found in my baby's behavior a symbol of the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit upon them. When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don't read and they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watch TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If television is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight about it? Let them watch it all they want!

1.Why did the author bring a TV set into his son's room?

A. To make his son keep quiet.         B. To spend the night by watching TV programs.

C. In order not to let his son feel lonely.   D. To make his son go to sleep as soon as possible.

2.The baby's reaction to the TV program was _______ for the writer.

A. unexpected                       B. encouraging              C. exciting                     D. calm

3.From this passage we know that the author is probably           .

A. a doctor                               B. a reporter                  C. an editor                    D. a teacher

4.According to the passage, which is true of the school children?

A. They prefer reading to watching TV.

B. They like watching TV after school.

C. They would rather watch TV than read books.

D. They like their teachers who teach them reading.
