Getting married can be one of the happiest moments in a person’s life. Throughout the world, weddings are very important events. Let’s look at some interesting wedding customs from different countries.

For African Americans, it is tradition for the married couple to jump over a broom covered with flowers. This represents the beginning of family life. It is interesting to note that African slaves who were brought to the USA started this tradition. African American couples were not allowed to have a legal marriage, so instead they had a ceremony where the bride and groom jumped over a broom “into marriage”.

Making jokes about the bride and groom is a wedding tradition in both France and Germany. In France, this includes making loud noises with pots; in Germany, wedding guests break dishes. Weddings in Germany often last for three days. On Thursday, there is a simple ceremony at a government office noting the official marriage of the couple. Then the couple will have a dinner with family and close friends. On Friday, there is a party. This is when guests break dishes to represent the start of a new life. Then on Sunday, there is a ceremony in a church.

In Greece and Italy, people eat special kinds of sweets at the wedding. Both Greece and Italy also have their own special wedding dances, which all of the guests enjoy.

In Russia, couples tie a doll to their wedding car if they want to have a daughter, or a toy bear if they want to have a son.

In England, it is tradition for the little girls to throw flowers on the ground on the way to the wedding ceremony. The bride and groom walk on these flowers. This represents the hope that the couples will follow the path that leads to a happy life.

有文章第一句“Getting married can be one of the happiest moments in a person’s life.”

Let’s look at some interesting wedding customs from different countries.

根據第二段第二句“This represents the beginning of family life”這代表著家庭生活的開始。這里“this”就是題目“Married couple jump over a broom covered with flowers”結婚夫婦跳過覆蓋鮮花的掃帚,故用.represents。

根據文中“African American couples were not allowed to have a legal marriage”過去美裔黑人夫婦不允許有合法婚姻。

根據第三段“ Weddings in Germany often last for three days.”

根據第四段“ Both Greece and Italy also have their own special wedding dances”句意是:希臘和意大利也有他們自己特殊的婚禮舞蹈。“both...and”表示兩者都,動詞用復數形式,“either...or”也表示兩者都,動詞用單數形式,故用or。

根據第五段“In Russia, couples tie a doll to their wedding car if they want to have a daughter”在俄羅斯,如果夫婦想要一個女孩就在婚車上系一個娃娃。

This represents the hope that the couples will follow the path that leads to a happy life.”

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do; once or twice she had looked into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of the book,” thought Alice, “without pictures and conversations?”

So she was considering in her own mind whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain(雛菊花環) would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

There was nothing so very remarkable in that; but when the rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit- hole under the bush.

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.

Down, down, down. Would the fall never come to an end? “I wonder how many miles I’ve fallen by this time?” she said aloud. “I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the earth. Let me see: that would be four thousand miles down, I think. I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth! How funny it’ll seem to come out among the people that walk with their heads downward! The Antipathies, I think—but I shall have to ask them what the name of the country is, you know. ‘Please, Ma’am, is this New Zealand or Australia?’ And what an ignorant little girl she’ll think me for asking! No, it’ll never do to ask.”

Down, down, down. There was nothing else to do, when suddenly, thump! thump! Down she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves, and the fall was over.

What kind of books do you think will interest Alice most?

  A. Books that her sister was reading.

  B. Books without pictures or conversations.

  C. Books about white rabbits.

  D. Books with pictures and conversations.

Which of the following is true?

  A. Alice suddenly saw a white rabbit with a strange umbrella.

  B. Alice managed to fall right through the earth.

  C. Alice ran after the white rabbit across the field out of curiosity.

  D. The people on the opposite side of the earth walk with their heads downward.

Which is the right order of the story?

  a. Alice jumped into a large hole.

  b. A white rabbit ran close by her.

  c. Alice sat by her sister, doing nothing.

  d. She fell upon some sticks and dry leaves.

  A. c-b-a-d     B. d-a-c-b       C. a-b -c-d        D. d-c-a -b

From the passage, we can see Alice is a(n)________girl.

  A. helpful and friendly           B. curious and imaginative

  C. brave and curious             D. ignorant and pretty

The following paragraph “In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.” can be put between_________.

  A. Paragraphs 1 and 2             B. Paragraphs 2 and 3

  C. Paragraphs 3 and 4             D. Paragraph 4 and 5

As a human being you may have the choice of three basic attitudes towards life. You may treat life with the philosophy (哲學) of the vegetable, in which case your life will include being born, eating, drinking, sleeping, marrying, growing old and dying.

The second basic attitude is to look at life as if it were a business. A great many so-called successful men and women believe that life is a business. If you believe so, your first question of life, naturally, is " What do I get out of it? " " How much is this worth to me?" In a word, based on this attitude, happi??ness becomes a matter of successful competition. The great ma??jority of human beings today look at life as if it were a busi??ness.

The third attitude toward life is the way of the artist. Here the basic philosophy is "What can I put into it?". They value cooperation and contribution. This point of view has been proved by history; for history remembers best those who have contributed most richly to the interests of their fellow-men. The more we investigate(調查),the more we become certain that the artistic attitude is the only one which goes with human happiness.

From the passage we know people who take the second life attitude ________.

A. are mostly businessmen

B. think of getting the interests (利益) first

C. find their happiness from hard work

D. take competition as their whole life

People who are best remembered by history are probably

A. those living on vegetables       B. successful men

C. artists                                    D. businessmen

We may infer from this passage that ________.

A. some people are living only on vegetables

B. the artistic attitude is accepted by most people

C. the writer prefers the third life attitude

D. artists do most for the society in order to be remembered longer than others

But this time she is surprised when an announcement about protecting songs’ copyright bursts onto the screen. The age of free music and movie downloads may have come to an end as Web companies like Baidu are accused of pirating copyright. Lawsuits(訴訟) have been filed against four websites offering free downloads. In September 2005, a Beijing court ordered Baidu to pay recording company Shanghai Push compensation for their losses. She always shares her favourite songs downloaded from Baidu with her friends. When told about the lawsuit, she began to feel a little guilty about obtaining others’ work without paying.
However, other teenagers have different ideas. Wang Yafei, a Senior 2 girl from Jinan, Shandong Province pointed out that file sharing is a good way to promote pop singers. “If I download a song and really like it, I will buy the CD,” she said. “So what the recording companies really should concentrate on is improving their music, rather than pursuing (追趕)file-sharers.”
