Harrison Ford(哈里森·福特)

Harrison Ford was born on July l3, 1942, in Chicago, to an Irish Catholic(天主教的)father and a Russian Jewish mother.

Although young Ford had no direction(方向)in life, not to mention no motivation(動(dòng)力)to learn, he continued in his studies and attended Ripon College, in Wisconsin. A below average student, Ford took an acting class to try raising his grade point average. This didn't help since Ford was kicked out of(開(kāi)除)Ripon just weeks before graduation—but the acting classes did serve another purpose—they gave Ford a glimmer(微光)of direction in his life.

Ford left for Los Angeles with the hopes of pursuing(從事)an acting career. Once in LA, Ford received bit parts in television series, but this was not keeping him busy nor was it paying the bills. He took a job as a carpenter with the task of building a recording studio. Producers and directors told Ford that he did not have what it takes to be all actor, but he did have an ability for carpentry and taught himself about it with the help of a library book he borrowed.

And then he began the relationship with director George Lucas. Ford was offered a role in the film American Graffiti《美國(guó)畫(huà)師》, but gave it up when he learned his salary was not half as big as what he was earning as a carpenter. When he was offered a slight pay raise, he finally accepted the role.

This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, which led to his historical role as Han Solo in Star Wars《星球大戰(zhàn)》. After his work in Star Wars, Ford performed in another star-turning role, this time for directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, in the first installment(分本演出)of the Indiana Jones series(系列影片), Raiders of the Lost Ark《奪寶奇兵》.

With dramatic(生動(dòng)的)roles in films such as Presumed Innocent《推定無(wú)罪》, Patriot Games《愛(ài)國(guó)者游戲》, The Fugitive《逃亡者》, Clear and Present Danger《迫在眉睫》, The Devil's Own《與魔鬼同行》, and Air Force One《空軍一號(hào)》(to name just a few), it's no wonder Ford is one of the most respected actors of his time.

Although 7 of Ford's films are among the top grossing films(最高票房收入)of all time, he has never actually won an Academy Award. He was recognized for his work in the 1985 drama Witness《目擊者》with a Best Actor Oscar nomination(提名)and has received a lot of other prestigious(有聲望的)awards.

Respected as a sex symbol(象征)by women worldwide, the person behind the most beloved heroes in film's history is regarded as an excellent actor by both sexes. He earns a salary of at least $ 20 million per movie.

Diane Arbus is known for creating intense black and white photographs of very unusual people. She used a special camera that produced square shaped images. One art expert said Diane Arbus turned photography inside out. Instead of looking at her subjects, she made them look at her.

Diane Arbus was born in 1923 to a wealthy family in New York City. After finishing high school at the age of 18, Diane married Allan Arbus. Mr. Arbus worked in the advertising department of her father’s store.

It was Mr. Arbus who gave Diane her first camera. Diane soon decided to take a class with the famous photographer Berenice Abbott. The Arbuses eventually started taking photographs of clothing. These images were used as advertisements for Diane’s father’s store. After the birth of their daughter, Doon, the Arbuses started a business together. Their purpose was to photograph clothing fashions. Diane Arbus was the stylist. She would prepare the hair and faces of the fashion models who wore the clothing being photographed. Allan Arbus took the pictures.

The couple soon had jobs from important fashion magazines such as “Vogue” and “Harper’s Bazaar”. Their work was very successful during the 1950s. They became part of a group of artists that were helping to redefine visual culture. They were breaking with past traditions to create a new look for a new decade, the sixties.

But Diane was not satisfied with her secondary role. She wanted a more active part in making photographs. She wanted to explore her own artistic expression and freedom. To do this, she stopped working with her husband. Then she started taking photography classes at the New School in New York City.

Arbus’ teacher, Lisette Model, influenced her in many ways. She showed Diane how to use a camera like an expert. She also taught Diane to use her art to face her doubts and fears. Miss Model once said that Diane soon started “not listening to me but suddenly listening to herself.”

A

It u won $ 50,000,000 would u still go to college?

Lots of people go to college so they have a chance to get a better job, but if you won $ 50 million, would you still pursue(追求)a higher education?

Re: If u won $ 50,000,000 would u still go to college?

I would surely still go to college if I had that much money, but I would not be competing for a scholarship on collegenet. com. I would probably still discuss things here and I would create other scholarships to help other people to go to college as well.

With $ 50 million, I would not have to worry about getting a loan(貸款)from Chase Bank or finding scholarships to study abroad. I would have published several books by now as well, but I would still pursue my education. Going to undergraduate school is something that I really want to do because I want to become a Pediatrician. Money may buy a lot of things, but it does not necessarily give you knowledge and knowledge is what I am hunting for now.

I am not just going to school to get a better job; I am going to school to realize all of my dreams. $ 50 million is a lot of money, but no amount of money can keep me from my dreams.

Veggie thought: “Money may make things easier, but it is not everything. ”

Re: If u won $ 50,000,000 would u still go to college?

Would I still go? UMM , YES YES YES YES YES! ! ! ! !

I still want to teach... I don’t care if I have more money than Bill Gates... I still want to be in a classroom teaching! ! And I need a degree to do that! Teaching is my dream job, and it would make me really happy.

I would pay off my loans as well as my boyfriend’s loans and help out a couple of friends who are having trouble with money.

Re: If u won $ 50,000,000 would u still go to college?

I would still go to college. The only difference is with that much money to go to college I probably would stay in college longer and pursue a few extra degrees while I am there. I am looking for knowledge not money. The only problem is I need money to pursue knowledge.

Also I could set up scholarship funds and I could save some more for additional dreams that I have.

56. According to the answers, what do they have in common?

A. They all prefer money to education.

B. They all want to get a better job.

C. They will continue to pursue knowledge.

D. They will give up jobs.

57. From the first answer, we know the person is ________.

A. patient         B. ambitious        C. mean            D. selfish

58. In the following statements, which is true according to the passage?

A. They all have something they want to do.

B. They think money is more important than knowledge.

C. The first person is rich.

D. The second person doesn’t want to get other scholarship.

請(qǐng)認(rèn)真閱讀下列短文,從短文后各題所給的A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng),并在答題卡上將該項(xiàng)涂黑。

A “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet website called a “blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying “web log”, or “personal website”. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.

There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to the people who read them. They contain links to other websites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.

A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.

However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.

At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service “weblogs.com”. He said the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closed.

One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the website in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called The Weblog Handbook. It has been translated into four languages so far.

Miss Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about thirty thousand visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything—politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent being stolen from online bank accounts.

1. The text is mainly written to ________.

A. introduce an Internet website called “blog”     B. tell readers about blogs

C. introduce a short way of saying “web log”      D. tell readers how to write blogs

2. From the text we can learn that blogs cover almost everything except ________.

A. different ideas                                             B. medical advice

C. advertisements                                             D. account passwords

3. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the text?

A. Politicians don’t use blogs at all.

B. A lot of bloggers no longer write or read blogs.

C. Those who like to use blogs are mostly teenage girls.

D. Dave Winer closed his “weblogs.com” because of the money shortage.

4. The reason why Rebecca’s Pocket is still going strong is that ________.

A. it was created by a woman                                   B. it is about the history of blogs

C. it provides useful information and advice

D. it has editions in at least four different languages
