Alexis De Tocqueville, the French political scientist,,historian, philosopher and politician. Is most famous for a four-volume book he wrote called Democracy in America. He came to America in 1831 to study the American form of democracy’and what it might mean to the rest of the world. After a visit of only nine months,,he wrote a remarkable book which is regarded as a classic.De Tocqueville had unusual powers of observation. He described not only the democratic system of government and how it operated, but also its effect on how Americans think, feel, and act, Many scholars believe he had a deeper understanding of traditional American beliefs and values than anyone else who has written about。the United States. What is so remarkable is that

many of these characteristics which he observed nearly 200years ago are still visible and

meaningful today. His observations are also important because the timing of his visit, the 1830s,was before America was industrialized. This was the era of the small farmer, the small businessman, and the settling of the western frontier. It was the period of history when the traditional values of the new country were newly established. In just a generation, some 40 years since the adoption of the U.S:Constitution.the new form of government had—already produced a society of people with unique values. He was, however,a fair observer and saw both the good and bad sides of these qualities.

The first part of Democracy m America was written in 1831—32 and published in 1835.A highly positive and optimistic account of American government and society, the book was very well received. He attempted to get a glimpse of the core of American society.all the while promoting his own philosophy:the equaling of the classes and the unavoidable depth of aristocratic(貴族的)privilege The rest of the book he labored on for four years.and in 1840 the second part was published. This was substantially more pessimistic than the first, warning of the dangers despotism (暴政)and governmental centralization, and applying his ideas and criticisms more directly to France. As a result, it was not received as well as the first part, except in England where it was highly thought of.

What is the passage primarily about?

    A.Alexis De Tocqueville

    B.Democracy in America

C.The progress achieved in America within about 40 years after adoption of the U.S.Constitution.

D.The influence of the book Democracy in America

B.The book was so detailed and thorough after only such a comparatively short visit.

C.That the second volume should be so pessimistic in comparison with the first.

     D.De Tocqueville’s powers of observation.

Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.The English don’t like the French

B.The book was most important because it was the first time that American values had been

clearly documented.

     C. De Tocqueville was a slow writer.

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

D
Many of the snacks are high in sugar, fat and salt. Vending machines(自動售貨機) filled with unhealthy snacks in leisure centres run the risk of fuelling childhood obesity.
The British Heart Foundation found that despite being banned from schools and children’s TV, crisps and chocolate are on sale where children exercise. And children’s meals on offer at the 35 venues spot-checked were mostly chips, chicken nuggets(雞肉塊), sausages and burgers.
The charity (慈善機構) wants stricter regulation over the food choices available.
The report was prepared by the Food Commission, which looked at leisure centres, bowling clubs, ice skating centres and park cafes.
The average calorie content of vending machine snacks was 203 calories, which would take a seven-year-old 88 minutes of swimming to use up.
Fresh fruit was displayed at less than half of the places visited, and nutritional information was displayed at just two of the places visited. The BHF said this severely limits children’s and parents’ ability to assess the nutritional values of the products they are buying.
BHF’s chief executive Peter Hollins said: “It’s fantastic that these kids are getting fit and having fun at the same time but this is being undermined by junk food sold to them.
“Councils and leisure providers need to reconsider the food choices they are providing and make it easier for parents and children to make healthier choices.”
The charity is now calling for public and private sector providers to lead the way in ensuring healthy food choices available and easily identifiable(可辯認的). It says it should be made a requirement that vending machines in publicly owned facilities be stocked with healthier products.
A spokeswoman of the Department of Health said: “We fully encourage the adoption of healthy vending machines across the country and expect local authorities to make sure there are healthy food options available in their leisure centres.”

55. It is implied in the passage that ____.
A. vending machines sell a lot of unhealthy food that causes obesity.

It’s going to be a busy day at Betsy Ross house in Philadelphia on Thursday. She won’t be there, since she died in 1836, but hundreds of tourists will be going through her house.

You see, Thursday is Flag Day in the United States. The unofficial holiday commemorates the adoption of the stars-and-stripes design of the American flag by the Continental Congress 235 years ago, on June 14, 1777. According to lore, the Ross House is the birthplace of the nation’s flag. That’s open to debate, but it’s a story that schoolbooks still tell. Betsy Ross was a seamstress, busy  sewing cushions for chairs in Philadelphia, which was the focus place of the American revolution against British rule. The Declaration of Independence by the colonists was signed there, and so was the new nation’s Constitution after independence was won.

Widowed when her husband, a member of the local militia, was killed in a gunpowder explosion, Betsy Ross often mended the clothes of the rebels’ leader and future U.S. president, George Washington.  According to what some say in history and others a stretch of what really happened, Washington asked Ross to design and sew the new nation’s flag. The story was promoted by Ross grandson, who wrote that Betsy Ross had “made with her hands the first flag.” She became a role model for girls - a shining example of women’s contributions to the nation’s history. Most research indicates that Ross did sew the first flag. She’s credited with substituting artful five-point white stars for six-pointed ones in the upper-left blue field. But many other accounts indicate George Washington brought the design to Ross and simply asked her to stitch it together.

In a letter, Washington wrote: “We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her.  And the white stripes shall go down to posterity as representing liberty.”

1.People would like to go to Ross’s house in Philadelphia to _____.

A. ask Betsy Ross who created the first American flag

B. meet her grandson who wrote a book about flags

C. debate over who designed the first American flag

D. remember her as the creator of the first American flag

2.Which statement is true according to the passage?

A. Betsy Ross was one of the people who signed The Declaration of Independence

B. All are in agreement that Ross designed the first American flag

C. It is almost certain that Ross did sew the first American flag

D. It is George Washington who designed the stars and stripes flag

3.The underlined the word “seamstress” in Paragraph 2 probably means_____.

A. a person who designs flags        B. a person who makes a living by sewing

C. a person who takes part in revolution D. a person who creates chairs

4.What does the last paragraph imply according to the passage?

A. It implies that the U.S. is independent from Britain

B. It implies that Washington liked Ross’s design of the flag

C. It implies that Washington might be the designer of the flag

D. It implies that Ross did have helped with the design of the flag
