Rossetti looked them  29  carefully. After the first few, he knew that they were worthless, showing not the least sign of artistic talent. But Rossetti was a  30  man, and he told the elderly  31  as gently as possible that the pictures were of little value and showed little talent. He was sorry,  32  he could not 33  to the man.
The visitor was  34  , but seemed to expect Rossetti’s  35   .He then apologized for  36  Rossetti’s time, but would he just  37  a few more drawings—these done by a(n)  38  art student?Rossetti looked over the  39  batch (一批) of sketches and immediately became  40  over the talent they revealed(顯示;透露) .“These,” he said,“Oh, these are good. This young student has great talent. He should be  41  every help and encouragement in his career as an artist. He has a hopeful future if he will work and stick to it.”
Rossetti could see that the old man was  42  moved.“Who is this fine young   artist?” he asked.“Your son?” “No,” said the old man sadly.“It was I  43  painted the pictures forty years ago.  44  I had heard your praise then! For you see, I got discouraged and 45  drawing—too soon.”

BUKHANNON, West Virginia—Two rescue teams slowly moved along a two-mile path on Monday night to the site of a coal mine explosion that trapped 13 miners, who had not been heard from since the early morning accident. Meanwhile, at a nearby church, more than 250 family members and friends gathered, waiting for updates(最新報道)on the rescuers’ progress.

The miners were trapped at about 6:30 and many families weren’t informed of the accident until about 10 a.m---more than three hours after it happened.“It’s very upsetting, but you’ve got to be patient, I guess,” said John Helms, whose brother, Terry, was trapped in the mine. The trapped miners were about 260 feet underground and about 10,000 feet from the Sago Mine’s entrance, said Roger Nicholson, general counsel from International Coal Group.

At a late night news conference, Nicholson said one team had advanced about 4, 800 feet in the four hours since entering the mine just before 6 p.m.Another team entered the mine about 30 minutes later.

He said the crew was very experienced, with some members having worked underground for

30 to 35 years. The miners were equipped with about one hour of breathable oxygen each. The company has not released the names of the miners.

The teams test the air about every 500 feet, and have to disconnect (remove) the power to the phones they use to communicate with the surface before doing that.“ We don’t want to be energizing anything if it’s in an atmosphere with burnable gases,” Kips said. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.High levels of carbon monoxide were discovered shortly after the explosion, which delayed rescue efforts, but those levels have since subsided(減退), authorities said.

D.the rescue started as soon as the accident happened

2.If the first team advanced at an average speed, they could dig about _______ per hour.

         A.1,000 feet                B.2,400 feet                    C.1,200feet                  D.4,800feet

3.Where can the passage be seen?

Science can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure(血壓) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.

Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some.an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife.A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress(緊張)1evels and blood pressure in people-half of them pet owners-while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic(算術)or held a hand in ice water.Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife,a close friend or with a pet.People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed(放松)around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.

A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits.Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs;a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds,or 5% of their body weight.Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15%of their body weight.Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but,say researchers, got more exercise overall-mostly with their dogs--and found it worth doing.

    A.he has a pet companion

B.he has less stress of work

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline(下降) when they reach middle age.

The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.

“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.”

What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s. “This gender( 性別) difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink.

The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.

1.The underlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “________”.

A. health          B. ageing         C. long life            D. effect

2.The text mainly talks about ________.

A. men’s heart cells                 B. women’s ageing process

C. the gender difference              D. hearts and long life

3.According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ________.

A. women have more cells than men when they are born

B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat

C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age

D. women never lose their pumping power with age

4.If you want to live longer, you should ________.

A. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthy

B. find out the reason for ageing

C. enable your heart to beat much faster

D. prevent your cells from being lost

5.We can know from the passage that ________.

A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found out

B. scientists are on the way to finding out why the male heart loses more of the cells

C. the team has done something to prevent the male from suffering the greater loss

D. women over 70 could lose more heart cells than those at the age of 20

A frightening example of the sea’s power saw 125,000 people die in 12 different countries last week. The terrible disaster was caused when a great earthquake sent tsunamis breaking into Indian Ocean coastlines. Various areas in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Malaysia and East Africa have been destroyed by the huge waves. Whole towns were simply swept aside by the power of the water. Cars, trains and buildings could not remain steady, not to say the people who stood in the way.

The earthquake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale and occurred off the coast of Indonesia. It was recorded as the fifth strongest since 1900. Scientists said the quake was as powerful as a million of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan during the World War II. “This may be the worst natural disaster in recent history because it is affecting so many heavily populated coastal areas.” said Jan Ege-land, a UN official.

Because such waves hardly happen in the Indian Ocean, there is no system in place to warn coastal people who are about to be hit. Tsunami is a Japanese word. They are usually caused by a sudden rise or fall of part of the Earth’s crust under the ocean. Tsunamis often happen in oceans and they are most common in the Pacific.

Tsunamis can be very long, as much as 100 kilometers. They are able to cross entire oceans without losing much energy. One of the most striking facts about tsunamis is that an earthquake on one side of the Pacific Ocean can cause huge waves on the other side.

When the ocean is deep, tsunamis can travel unnoticed at speeds of up to 800 kilometers per hour. They can cross the entire ocean in a day or less. The wave may only be a few meters high in the ocean, but when it is near the shore and reaches shallow water, the wave builds up very quickly in height.

61. How many countries were stricken by the terrible disaster?

         A. 6.                                      B. 12.                          C. 18.                          D. Not sure.

62. All of the following statements are true EXCEPT __________.

Tsunami is a word taken in from Japanese

Tsunamis are quite common in the Indian Ocean

The earthquake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale

No warning system has been set up to watch tsunamis there

63. We can know from this passage that __________.

the earthquake has been the strongest in the last century

the wave soon becomes higher when it reaches the shore

the atomic bombs were more powerful than the earthquake

tsunamis can cross entire oceans with almost the same energy

64. You’ll see the passage in __________ section of a newspaper most probably.

A. Sports                              B. Health                    C. News                      D. Culture

TOKYO —Imagine a bicycle seat connected by mechanical frames(機械支架) to a pair of shoes for an idea of how the new wearable assisted-walking machine from Honda works.

The experimental machine, showed on Friday, is designed to support bodyweight, reduce stress on the knees and help people organize steps and stay in crouching(蹲坐) positions.Honda showed a video of its employees wearing the machine.

Engineer Jun Ashihara also said the machine is useful for people standing in long lines and to people who run around to make deliveries.

"This should be as easy to use as a bicycle," Ashihara said."It reduces stress, and you should feel less tired."

To wear it, you put the seat between your legs, put on the shoes and push the “on” button. Then just start walking around.

In a test run for media, this reporter found it does take some time to get used to the machine.  “I could sense how it supported my moves, pushing up on my bottom when I crouched and pushing at my soles(腳底) to help lift my legs when I walked,” he said.

The system has a computer, a motor, gears(齒輪), batteries and sensors in it, so it responds to a person's movements, according to Honda Motor Co.

Pricing and commercial product plans are still undecided.Japan's No.2 automaker will begin testing a prototype(模型) later this month.

The need for such mechanical help is expected to grow in Japan, which has one of the most rapidly aging societies in the world.
