Surviving treasures from the National Museum of Afghanistan

AFGHANISTAN

CROSSROADS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD

3 MARCH — 3 JULY 2013

At the heart of the silk road, Afghanistan linked the great trading routes of ancient Iran, Central Asia, Indian and China, and the more distant cultures of Greece and Rome.

Nearly lost during the years of civil war and later Taliban (塔利班) rule, precious objects that reveal this diverse past were bravely hidden in 1989 by officials from the National Museum of Afghanistan to save them from destruction.

The surviving treasures date from 2000 BC to the 1st century AD and included rich gold ornaments (裝飾品) found at a burial site and limestone (石灰石) sculptures of a Greek city.

This is a unique opportunity to discover the story of Afghanistan’s ancient culture, its immense fragility, and the remarkable dedication (奉獻) shown to its survival and protection.

Thirty million people visit Paris every year and when you are standing in a queue at the Louvre waiting to have a look at the Mona Lisa,it is possible to think that each and every one of them is in the same room as you.

But it is possible to see the iconic sites of the City of Lights without falling into the crowded tourists.

My favourite way to enjoy Paris is to

take enough money to last a visit of at least two months. I did this when I was 20. I lived in a poor hotel on Rue St. Jacques around the corner from the Sorbonne and the Jardin du Luxembourg. Surviving on 100 francs a day, I ate baguettes, tomatoes and a jar of mayon-naise. I drank my short blacks while standing at the counter of cafes. I walked everywhere, down the city's grand avenues and up its hid-den old alleyways. I loved every single pover-ty-covered moment of that winter.

I've been back several times since for shorter trips. Each time, Paris offers new joys and discoveries.

An increasingly popular way to get that true Parisienne (巴黎女子的) touch to your trip is to rent an apartment. Brisbane author Nerida Newtown loved the “at home” feeling when she and her family realized a long-term dream by living in Paris for a few months.

If you can't manage a long stay, never fear. Jodie Minus's excitable account of her whirlwind trip to the City of Lights shows how you can get the most out of Paris in a short time. Jenny Stevens managed to show a first-time visitor much of Paris. But now it's over to you: Share your secrets and passions about Paris.

(1) The text is mainly to tell readers________.

[ ]

A.where to visit in Paris

B.some tips on how to visit Paris

C.the writer's experience of visiting Paris

D.the introduction of Paris

(2) Those who want to get tips on short trips in Paris had better contact________.

[ ]

A.the Mona Lisa

B.Jodie Minus

C.Jenny Stevens

D.the writer

(3) According to the text, “ the City of Lights” should refer to“________”.

[ ]

A.the city of Paris

B.the hotel the writer ever lived in

C.a famous tourist attraction in Paris

D.the name of a Paris' street

(4) According to the writer, in order to know better about Paris, visitors________.

[ ]

A.should read Nerida Newtown's novels first

B.had better plan a long trip there

C.must get advice from Jenny Stevens

D.should visit Louvre for the Mona Lisa

Farming was once the chief way of life in nearly every country. People cannot live without food, and nearly all their food comes from crops and animals raised on farms. Not many people farm for a living any more, but farming remains the most important work in the world.

Before the nineteenth century, the typical American family lived on a small farm. They raised pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, and planted corn, fruits, garden vegetables, and wheat. Everyone worked long and hard, but the results were often poor. Families barely harvested enough food for themselves. This situation began to change during the last half of the 1800's and it changed remarkably(明顯地) in the next century.

Scientific methods and labor-saving machinery have made farming increasingly productive. The development of improved plant varieties and fertilizers has helped double and even triple the production of some major crops. More scientific animal care and animal raising have helped increase the amount of meat and products that animals produce. At the same time, the use of tractors and other modern farm equipment has sharply reduced the need for farm labor.

As farming has become less important as a way of life in the United States, it has become more important as a source which offers materials to industry. Today's successful farmers are experts not just in agriculture but also in accounting, marketing, and finance. Farms that are not run in a similar way have great difficulty surviving.

We are told in the first paragraph about ____.

A. the history of farming                       B. the importance of farming

C. the development of farming                  D. the changes of farming

Which of the following describes American farming before the 19th century?

A. Farmers didn’t work hard on their farms.

B. Farmers used tractors to help them.

C. Farming was the main way of living for most people.

D. Farmers could supply materials to industry.

Crop production has increased greatly now thanks to all the following EXCEPT __.

   A. scientific methods                 B. labor- saving machinery

C. farmers’ hard work                 D. chemical fertilizers

The passage mainly talks about_____.

   A. the advantages of American farming              B. the changes in American farming

C. the situation of American farms                  D. how rapidly farming has developed

Fear can be fun. Many young people queue up to ride very fast and scary roller coasters, screaming but enjoying themselves. Other people like to read “goose bumps (雞皮疙瘩)” books or watch horror movies at night, scared to death but feeling excited. Why do people like being scared?

Fear is an ancient way of surviving. Being scared makes animals, including humans escape from danger and save themselves. It is because of fear that we have lived through millions of years of evolution. Those who lacked a strong fear response were more likely to be killed, leaving the more fearful and careful to pass their genes onto the next generation.

How do scientists explain why shaking over such scary things is fun? “Some kids will go to a scary movie and love it and laugh over it, others will feel anxious and hide their faces and some won’t even set foot in the cinema,” said Ned Kalin, a US scientist. “Which kind of person you are depends partly on experiences you’ve had and partly on your genes.”

What happens in the brain when something frightens you? Nerves that begin at the eyes and ears lead to a part of the brain called the amygdale. When you suddenly see a snake, for example, the amygdale makes you freeze, sweat, have a quickened heartbeat, or run very fast. However, seeing the snake also uses another part of the brain, the cortex. It analyzes the situation, and if it finds that the snake is only made of rubber it tells your heart and the rest of your body to calm down. Think of the amygdale as the engine and the cortex as the brake.

Back to the first question: Why do some people like to make themselves scared? “One reason is that we can play games with fear, find ways to reduce the scariness by looking away or thinking of something else,” Kalin said. “To believe we have control over a situation gives us a feeling of power.” “Scary movies or novels are good practice to prepare young people for the real thing. Thrills such as roller coaster rides also go to the brain’s pleasure centre.”

And there might be some evolutionary advantage to being able to adjust this system that is there to protect people.

  72. How many questions are answered in the passage?

  A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.

  73. Some people like to be scared because______.

  A. they are afraid that the fear genes will be passed onto their children

  B. it’s a good practice to get prepared for the real frightening situation

  C. it can help them show their own personalities

  D. they will feel powerful after getting rid of fear

  74. Which of the following is true about the people who are not easily scared?

  A. Their cortex is better at analyzing the situations.

  B. They are more likely to suffer from potential danger.

  C. They are born unaffected by anything horrible.

  D. They lack a strong response towards threat.

  75. What is the best title of the passage?

  A. Ready to scream? B. How to be scared?

  C. Willing to shake? D. Why to be scared?

Of the 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, linguists (語言學家) say, nearly half are likely to disappear this century. In fact, one falls out of use about every two weeks.

Some languages die out in an instant, at the death of the only surviving speaker. Others are lost gradually in bilingual (雙語的) cultures, as local tongues are edged out by the dominant (占主導地位的) language at school, in the marketplace and on television.

New research, supported by the National Geographic Society and the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages, has found the five regions where languages are disappearing most rapidly. They are northern Australia, central South America, North America's upper Pacific coastal zone, eastern Siberia, and Oklahoma and the southwestern United States.

K. David Harrison, an associate professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College, US, said that more than half the languages had no written form and were vulnerable to loss and being forgotten." Their loss leaves no dictionary, no text, or no record of the accumulated knowledge and history of a disappeared culture.

Harrison and other researchers started their rescue project last year. They have been trying to identify and record endangered languages. They interviewed and made recordings of the few remaining speakers of a language and collected basic word lists. The individual projects, some lasting three to four years, involve hundreds of hours of recording speech, developing grammar and preparing children's readers in the obscure (逐漸沒落的) language. The research has concentrated on preserving entire language families.

"These are probably languages that cannot be brought back, but at least we made records of them," said Gregory Anderson, director of the Living Tongues Institute, in Oregon, US.

1.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A. Many languages are quickly disappearing.

B. Some languages are disappearing because they are hard to remember.

C. Chinese is one of the languages that are disappearing.

D. Thanks to some researchers, many endangered languages have been rescued.

2.What does the word vulnerable in the fourth paragraph mean?

A. easy to remember.                         B. easy to forget.

C. likely to be damaged.                     D. likely to be protected.

3.Which of the following is true according to the fifth paragraph?

A. Harrison and other researchers are trying to find out why some languages died out.

B. Harrison and other researchers tried to start a rescue project.

C. Harrison and other researchers have concentrated on preserving all the languages.

D. Harrison and other researchers have done some rescue work on the obscure languages.

4.One of the things that Harrison and other researchers did was         .

A. to have more people speak the disappearing language

B. to make records of the disappearing language

C. to limit dominant languages

D. to publish a dictionary of the disappearing language

5.What do you think is the suggested reason for some languages disappearing?

A. Local tongues are gradually edged out by the dominant language at school, in the marketplace and on television.

B. The number of people who speak the languages are small.

C. There are no dictionaries for the languages.

D. No one make records of the languages, so they gradually disappear.
