The producer appeared behind the recording studio window and smiled and waved to me like an old friend. And after I had read out a little test piece, he said,“That's fine, wonderful, Your voice is perfect, lovely, wonderful.”Then I read a longer passage in English about the delights of touring in Britain, and another about the delights of visiting

London, and both were“excellent”and“just right”, and I began to consider a job in radio. To be honest, I was fairly sure of myself though I lacked experience. Across the room in the Hamburg News Agency where we both worked, a friend named Peter Turner called to me, “I say, Mike, a man on the phone here wants someone to do a recording in English, and I'm booked up. Would you read something to him in English as a sort of test?”I did, and they said,“Perfect, lovely, wonderful…”Would I cane round?

It was after reading their passage in English in the studio that they noticed my vowel pronunciations were not altogether King's English, or even Prince Philip's, there was a larger silence than usual, then the voice said,“Fine, lovely, but you said the word ‘castle’with a short ‘a(chǎn)’. Could we have the passage again, please? But this time say ‘carsele’.”

This was easy. But then he noticed other differences in my pronunciation.

“It's my northern English accent,”I said, angry, because I had to apologize for it.

“Oh, I see…but Mr. Jamieson, we'll have to get it right, I'm afraid. The recording is for teaching English to German schoolchildren, and it must be spoken in the way it is taught in German schools.”

I read the passage again and again. But of course you cannot change the pronunciation of a lifetime in an hour. The studio men were in the state of having lost hope and underlined the vowels which caused me to feel angry, so that I'd remember them. Few, really. But because I had to concentrate(集中) on them, I made a lot of mistakes in my reading. Everyone got somewhat angry, so we all went out for a beer.

1.Broadcasting did not make Mike nervous ________.

[ ]

A.a(chǎn)lthough he had never done any before

B.because he worked in a news agency

C.a(chǎn)lthough the passage was long

D.because he was used to talking on the phone

2.What happened after Mike had done the recording a second time?

[ ]

A.They said nothing.

B.They could not understand one of the words.

C.They began to discuss Prince Philip's English.

D.They made him repeat it.

3.They wanted Mike to change his pronunciation because ________.

[ ]

A.German schoolchildren didn't like a northern accent

B.German schoolchildren were taught through recordings

C.it was different from the English taught in German schools

D.it was different from the English spoken in Germany

4.Why did Mike's reading of the passage get worse?

[ ]

A.He could not learn so many new sounds.

B.He was trying hard to get certain sounds right.

C.He needed a drink to clear his throat.

D.He was trying to do the recording in an hour.

閱讀理解

閱讀下面短文,從每題所給的四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone's satisfaction.

For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the colour you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is:“This is the right colour and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on.”

Now how does a woman go about buying clothes In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary(相反的) to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lockout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.

1.What does the passage tell us about women shoppers for clothes?

[ ]

A.They welcome suggestions from anyone.

B.Women rarely consider buying cheap clothes.

C.Women often buy things without giving the matter proper thought.

D.They listen to advice but never take it.

2.What does a man do when he can not get exactly what he wants?

[ ]

A.He buys a similar thing of the colour he wants.

B.He usually does not buy anything.

C.At least two of his requirements must be met before he buys.

D.So long as the style is right, he buys the thing.

3.Many jokes make fun of women shoppers by saying that ________.

[ ]

A.they waste money on inferior(劣質(zhì)的) goods

B.they should buy only the best clothes

C.they are much more sensible than men

D.they think of the price of clothes and nothing else

4.What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers?

[ ]

A.The fact that men do not try clothes on in a shop.

B.Women bargain for their clothes, but men do not.

C.Women stand up to shop. but men sit down.

D.The time they take over buying clothes

閱讀理解

The man who brings my milk used to knock for his money for the week I was eating breakfast on Saturday morning.Just lately he has been arriving before I get up.Workforce shortages mean that four men are sharing five rounds, so he has to start earlier.

Delivering milk to people’s homes is hardly good business, especially when the customer may have a choice of two or three firms serving a single road.In spite of my local difficulties, however, labor troubles are not as great as a few years ago. There are enough men prepared to make an early morning start for the sake of an open air job with a fair measure of freedom. If they did stop calling, women would find it hard work to collect all the milk they need from self service stores.Dairies(乳品業(yè))know that stopping deliveries in the United States resulted in falling sales.

Marketing ideas have included introducing extra lines, in addition to dairy products, which the milkmen can carry to increase business. One dairyman said, “It won’t be long before the milkmen deliver potatoes, and it seems as though variety will be limited only by the size of the trucks.

So the milkman is likely to remain a familiar figure, and the dairy products he sells are unlikely to change very much in this decade.Flavored(有味道的)milk is popular on the Continent. In Britain those who like it buy plain milk and add their own flavoring.Even the returnable bottle continues to be used.As long as it has a reasonable life-30 to 40 trips are usual-the cost of collection and cleaning is worthwhile.

(1)

The milkmen now start earlier on their delivery rounds than before because ________.

[ ]

A.

there is an increasing demand for milk delivery

B.

they hope to reach the customers’ homes in time

C.

they have to collect the money for the week’s milk house to house

D.

dairies are short of delivery men and the companies worry about falling sales

(2)

Why are there enough men prepared to make an early morning start?

[ ]

A.

Because they can enjoy a certain amount of freedom in the fresh air.

B.

Because they like working outdoors and breathe the air freely.

C.

Because they can enjoy a great amount of freedom outdoors.

D.

Because they like walking freely in the fresh air.

(3)

According to the passage, in this decade ________.

[ ]

A.

milkmen will disappear very soon

B.

flavored milk will become popular in Britain

C.

people will buy milk from self service stores

D.

there will be little change in the dairy business

(4)

It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A.

the British people seldom buy plain milk

B.

the returnable bottles are no longer used

C.

collection and cleaning of the returnable bottles cost nothing

D.

the returnable bottles won’t be thrown away until they are used dozens of times
