Compassion is a desire within us to help others. With effort, we can translate compassion into actions. An experience last weekend showed me this is true. I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款機)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash (現金), had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.

I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.

Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Charge it to me,” was all he said.

What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft and safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.

1.The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits_________ .

A. hoped to have the food first and pay later

B. promised to obey the store rules

C. forgot to take any money with him

D. could not afford anything more expensive

2.Which of the following best describes the old gentleman?

A. kind and lucky       B. friendly and helpful

C. poor and lonely     D. hurt and disappointed

3.The writer acted upon the store rules because_________ .

A. he felt no pity for the old gentleman

B. he considered the old man dishonest

C. he expected someone else to pay for the old man

D. he wanted to keep his present job

4.What does the writer learn from his experience?

A. Wealth is more important than anything else

B. Experience is better gained through practice

C. Obeying the rules means more than compassion.

D. Helping others is easier said than done

1.細節題:根據第一段中“He said he was out if cash ...he promised to repay me the next day.”可知那位老人想先吃飯后付款。故選A。

2.細節題:根據第二段“I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and wha the would be like if luck had gone his way.I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world, ”我想知道他在10年前或是20年前究竟是怎么樣一個人呢,想知道如果沒有當時的好運氣,他會是什么樣呢。我為世界上這種人類靈魂孤獨的人感到心疼。可知老人又窮又孤單。故選C。

3.細節題:根據第二段最后一句“ I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job”我感到說這個是愚蠢而不友善的,但我珍惜我的工作。故選D。

4.細節題:根據最后一段“pity is soft and safe and easy.compassion is caring in action.”可知幫助別人說起來容易做起來難。故選D。

D
Last week Jay McCarroll and The HSUS(The Humane Society of the United States)  made a bold fur-free statement on the runway, marking a new chapter for the fashion industry and animal protection. The encouraging response to McCarroll’s show confirmed that change is happening in fashion.
McCarroll has good reasons for rejecting fur. Each year, tens of millions of animals, including dogs and cats, needlessly suffer and die to fuel the fur industry. But what did Jay McCarroll use in place of fur? “I have patchwork pieces that contain all sorts of combinations of fabrics. The rest is cotton, nylon, polyester . . . you name it. I even have some stuff made out of bamboo/cotton blend. Anything but fur and leather, ”he told Fashion Wire Daily.
“So many people want to protect animals and live their lives without causing unnecessary cruelty. More than two thirds of Americans have pets, and we share a bond with animals every day. Saying no to fur can help millions of animals, and we want to show our respect to leading designers like Jay who embrace compassion as the fashion, ”said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The HSUS. “It is great to see leaders in the fashion industry recognizing that the animals need their fur more than we do.”
63.Which of the following is true about Jay McCarroll?
A. He is a famous fashion designer.
B. He is the executive vice president of the HSUS.
C. He is an editor of Fashion Wire Daily.
D. He is the head of all animal protection organization.
64.What does “a new chapter” in line two, paragraph one mean?
A. A new unit of a book.                                                 B. The beginning of a new trend.
C. The latest issue of a magazine.                       D. A newly established organization.
65.Which of the following is NOT recommended for clothing by Jay McCarroll?
A. Polyester.                       B. Bamboo.                         C. Leather.                 D. Patchwork pieces.
66.What do we learn from this passage?
A. Human beings depend emotionally on animals.
B. Fashion can go hand in hand with compassion for life.
C. Fur is more effective than bamboo/cotton blend for clothing.
D. Fur is more expensive than other materials for fashion designers.

科目:高中英語 來源:2010--2011學年浙江省嘉興市第一中學高二下學期期中考試英語卷 題型:閱讀理解

On numerous drives throughout my childhood, my mother would suddenly pull over the car to examine a flower by the side of the road or rescue a beetle (甲蟲) from certain tragedy while I, in my late teens and early twenties, sat impatiently in the car.
Though Mother’s Day follows Earth Day, for me, they have always been related. My mom has been “green” since she became concerned about the environment. Part of this habit was born of thrift (節儉). Like her mother and her grandmother before her, Mom saves glass jars, empty cheese containers and re-uses her plastic bags.
Mom creates a kind of give-and-take relationship with wildlife in her yard. She knows to pick the apples on her trees a little early to fend off the bears and that if she leaves the bird feeders out at night, it’s likely they’ll be knocked down by a family of raccoons (浣熊). Spiders that make their way into the house are captured (捕獲) in a juice glass and set loose in the garden.
I try to teach my children that looking out for the environment starts with being aware of the environment. On busy streets, we look for spent (開敗的) dandelions (蒲公英) to parachute; we say hello to neighborhood cats and pick up plastic cups and paper bags. This teaching comes easily, I realize, because I was taught so well by example. Mom didn’t need to lecture; she didn’t need to beat a drum to change the world. She simply slowed down enough to enjoy living in it and with that joy came compassion and an instinct (本能) for preservation.
I am slowing down and it isn’t because of the weight of my nearly forty years on the planet, it is out of my concern for the planet itself. I’ve begun to save glass jars and re-use packing envelopes. I pause in my daily tasks to watch the squirrels race each other through the palm (棕櫚樹) leaves above my porch (門廊).
Last summer, in the company of my son and daughter, I planted tomatoes in my yard. With the heat of August around me, I ate the first while sitting on my low wall with dirt on my hands. Warm from the sun, it burst on my tongue with a sweetness I immediately wanted to share with my mom.
【小題1】Why does the author say Earth Day is connected with Mother’s Day?

A.Because Mother’s Day falls shortly after Earth Day.
B.To stress that all the older women in her family are environmentalists.
C.To stress how much her mother cares about the environment.
D.Because on Mother’s Day her mother shows her how to be friend to nature.
【小題2】 According to the fourth paragraph, which of the following is the author’s mother NOT likely to do?
A.When she came across a lost dog, she helped it to find its shelter.
B.In spring, she spent some time watching the plants growing in the garden.
C.She joined in the campaign to encourage the public to contribute actively towards a better environment.
D.She walked to a nearby shop which was within ten minutes’ walk rather than drove there.
【小題3】What can we conclude from the article?
A.The author’s mother is very patient with her children.
B.The author’s mother knows how to live in harmony with nature.
C.The author’s mother always took care of the wildlife that came into her yard.
D.The author’s mother used to remind her to slow down to protect the environment.
【小題4】 We can infer from the article that ______.
A.the author thinks that too many people now label themselves environmentalists
B.the author’s mother knows how to get rid of the wildlife in her yard
C.the author believes that only by learning to slow down, can we enjoy life
D.the author realizes that she should teach her children by example as well
【小題5】What is the main idea of the last three paragraphs?
A.How the author taught her children to protect the environment.
B.How the author’s mother influenced the author.
C.What inspired the author to slow down and enjoy life.
D.How the author spent her time with her children.

I once did a year of voluntary service in a residential home for people with learning disabilities. It was set in an English village deep in the countryside, quite different from my home in Sweden. One of my fellow volunteers, a girl from Tanzania, seemed a little unhappy, so I asked what the problem was. She told me she had a friend back home who had financial difficulties and maybe it was impossible for her to complete her university courses.
So this friend of mine had sent all her money to Tanzania to support her friend! This meant that she didn't have much food to eat and no money to go anywhere outside the village.
I was so touched and I felt I had to do something. So, during my next trip to one of the nearby towns I walked into a shop. I didn’t have much money left myself but I thought I'd buy her an extra box of chocolate we both liked and some rice. I started talking to the woman(also a volunteer)working in the shop and eventually told her about my friend.
The woman looked at me, amazed. “Does she eat pasta?” she asked. “Yes,” I replied. She immediately started loading a bag with pasta, cookies, and other things until the bag was full. “Give her this for me. It’s my treat!’’ I couldn’t believe it but accepted with happiness. As I left the shop to go home with my unexpected bag of food, I asked the woman her name. “Just Gloria,” she said.
Imagine my friend’s face when I arranged the gifts on my kitchen table and fetched her from her room to see! I had never seen her so happy! A few weeks later she found Gloria in the shop and thanked her in person.
These two extraordinary women really showed me what true kindness and compassion(同情)are, and the impression will stay with me for the rest of my life!
【小題1】The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to    .

A.the shop
B.the writer's home
C.the residential home
D.a year of voluntary service

A.Because she had to stop her voluntary work.
B.Because she had no money to buy food or other things.
C.Because she had spent all her money on food and clothes.
D.Because her friend in Tanzania maybe had to quit school for lack of money.
【小題3】Why did the writer help the girl from Tanzania?
A.Because the writer was a volunteer.
B.Because they lived in the same room.
C.Because the writer was moved by her kind act.
D.Because the writer didn’t wish she went hungry.
【小題4】From the text, we know that    .
