It doesn't matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That's what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.
Al Herpin died at the age of 95.

I think machine power is better than human power because we cannot survive without our daily used machines like bikes, coolers, computers, etc.

Yes, it’s very clear that machine power is better than man power. But machine power has its limitations (局限). It cannot survive without electricity and manhandling. If it doesn’t have these two then it is completely useless. So man should not completely depend on machines. One more point is that because of the use of machines man has become lazy. This laziness has brought in many problems like obesity, arthritis (關節炎) and other health problems. But I am not saying that man should completely turn from machine power to man power. He should have a balance of both. Even I can’t think of life without a car, a computer and a cooler.
Sally
9-May-2008
Humans only created the machines. So, human power is greater than machine power. To do the things quickly we created the machines. But machines cannot think. That thinking power beats machine power.
Tina

But without humans there is no value of any machine. If someone wants to use his machine perfectly then one must have expert labor or man power.
Tommy

Hi to all, my opinion is that human power is more powerful than machine power, because human beings created the machines. Human brain works more compared to machines.
Mike

We all know that theme parks are places to have fun and amuse ourselves, but among so many exciting rides there are also some dangers, Make sure you know what the safety standards are for all the attractions at the park. If you do that , you will be safe and have fun.

Drink water. Believe it or not , dehydration-- when your body doesn’t have enough water--is the commonest cause of injuries at theme parks. Drinking water while you are at the park is not enough. You must make sure that you drink enough water before your visit.

Use your “common sense”. There are lots of people around , so make sure where your friends or family are .Also ,if you are walking and want to stop , make sure nobody is walking behind you. First step aside, then look behind and if you aren’t in anybody’s way, then stop.It might sound exaggerated(夸張的),but crashes between people can cause accidents.

Follow the instructions. The majority of theme parks have instructions for each ride. Some rides only allow people of a certain height. So make sure you are not too tall or too short before boarding any ride. Also, people with certain diseases or conditions are advised not to go on some rides. Do remember : If you are told not to go on a ride, then DON’T.

Do not ride with a bad atomach or if you’ve just eaten. Rides can make you ill because of their violent changes of direction and your lunch may end up on someone else’s head: surely not a very pleasant experience.

Have fun, relax, and be a little brave!

It doesn’t matter if you have one friend or 20, because there are only a few people in this world that can make you truly happy. For me, my family and my three best girlfriends mean everything to me.

Some days I didn’t want to go to school because I felt so disappointed in myself but I don’t regret a thing. It makes you stronger as a person, and if you are able to mend your friendships as I have done, then you can do anything.

My mother always told me, “Stephanie, remember that a friend is a gift that you give yourself. A friend will make you laugh and be there for the good or bad. A true friend will never make fun of you. If a friend is a piece of work, then he or she has never been a friend at all. A friend is the biggest gift to yourself.”

Everyone is going to make mistakes but please don’t push them away, especially if it’s someone you really care about. I know when I make a mistake I beat myself up about it. I just wish someone would reach out a hand to help me back  on my feet as my best friends did. If someone is new or doesn’t have a friend, please reach out and behind him/her because that small action could mean the world to him/her. Now that I’m older, I understand what my mom has been trying to tell me, and now I know that the friends that I choose will also be the kinds of friends that I would want to be surrounded by forever.

1.According to the passage, a true friend should be a person that _________.

A.often gives you gifts

B.makes you happy

C.does both good or bad things to you

D.seldom makes fun of you

2.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer _________.

A.understands what a friend means to her

B.doesn’t think that friends will make her truly happy

C.doesn’t have many friends

D.has nothing except her family and three friends

3.If you hope to have a friend, you should do the following EXCEPT_________.

A.giving advice and offering help if he or she makes mistakes

B.regarding him or her as a piece of work

C.considering him or her a valuable gift

D.trying to treat a newcomer as a friend

4.The last sentence probably means_________.

A.people around me are all my friends

B.I only choose the people around me to be my friends

C.the friends I choose will surround me every day

D.my true friends would always be by my side for my joys and sorrows

科目:高中英語 來源:2015屆江蘇揚州中學高一下期期中考試英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Four simple keys to transform your life

The power of choice.

Every one of us makes countless choices every day. Every choice we make has an impact on our lives. Even insignificant choices can affect what we experience and how we feel. When hunger strikes, we can reach for a healthy, nutritious snack, or we can choose the sugar high of junk food. The more important the decision, the greater its effect. For instance, how do I act towards that person who treated me badly? Do I generally choose to be passive, or do I actively set clear intentions and create what I want in my life? Every choice we make, however big or small, affects us in some way.

How do you make choices?

If you are interested in living a richer, fuller life, there is a foundation upon which you can base all of your decisions which can make life better not only for you, but also for those around you. This foundation is to choose based on what’s best for all. Imagine a world where every parent, spouse(配偶), friend, teacher, businessperson, and politician truly did their best to choose what’s best for all involved in every decision they made. We would certainly live in a more caring, supportive world.

It’s the intention.

“But how do I know what is really best?” you might ask. The answer is simple. It doesn’t matter. What matters is not the choice you make, but rather the intention behind your choice. What matters is that whatever decision you make, you are clear in your intention of choosing based on what’s best for all. If it later turns out that you made what appears to have been a bad choice, there’s no need for guilt. Knowing that you did your best to choose with a sincere desire for what’s best for all, your conscience stays clear and open. This then allows you to more easily learn from your mistakes, and to live with a clear heart and mind.

What’s best for me, too!

Choosing what’s best does not mean you have to always sacrifice yourself for other. An overly(過度的) exhausted mother can lose her temper easily. Some time off for this mother might seem selfish, yet in the long run, it can help her to be a better mother to her children. So as we move through each day of our lives, let us remember to include ourselves as we do our best to choose what’s best for all.

1.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Every one of us makes countless choices every day.

B.Every choice, however big or small, has an influence on us.

C.People act differently towards the person who treated them badly.

D.People tend to reach for a junk snack when hunger strikes.

2.How should we make choices?

A.To be interested in a richer, fuller life.

B.To make life better for ourselves.

C.To base our choices on what’s best for all.

D.To imagine a world where everyone did their best.

3. According to the author, what is really best?

A.The choice you make.                    B.The intention behind your choice.

C.The mistake you learn from.               D.The consequence of your choice.

4.To choose what is best for us, we’d better ________.

A.try to be selfish all the time                B.sacrifice ourselves for others

C.set aside some time for ourselves           D.control our temper before children
