Lie in bed, by an open window, and listen…

“No air conditioning? How can you sleep? ” a friend asks, horrified.I tell her my family has decided to shut the air conditioner off and reduce our electric bill.On this first night of our cost-cutting plan, it's only 85 degrees. We’re going to suffer, but the three kids complain anyway.

They have grown up in 72-degree comfort, protected from the world outside.

“It's too hot to sleep, ” my 13-year-old daughter complains.“I'm about to die from this heat, ” her brother complains down the hall.“Just try it tonight, ” I tell them.In truth I'm too tired to turn for long.My face is sweaty, but I lie quietly listening to the cricket choirs outside that remind me of childhood.

The neighbor's dog howls.Probably a passing squirrel. It's been years since I took the time to really listen to the night.

I think about grandma, who lived to 92 and still helped with my mom's gardening until just a few weeks before she died. And then, I'm back there at her house in the summer heat of my childhood.I move my pillow to the foot of grandma's bed and turn my face toward the open window.I turn the pillow, hunting for the cooler side.

Grandma saw me turn over and over.“If you just watch for the breeze(清風), ” she said, “you'll cool off and fall asleep.” I stare at the filmy white curtain, willing it to move.Lying still, waiting, I suddenly notice the life outside the window. The bug chorus.Neighbors, porch(門廊)-sitting late, speak in unclear words that calm me.

“Mom, did you hear that? ” my seven-year-old son cries, “I think it was an owl(貓頭鷹)family.”

“Probably, ” I tell him, “just keep listening…”

Without the working air conditioner, the house is peaceful, and the natural night noises seem close enough to touch.I hope I'm awake tonight when the first breeze comes in.

A UFO cult said on Saturday the world's second cloned(克隆)baby had been born to a Dutch woman but cloning experts swiftly dismissed the claim as a baseless stunt. (花招)

“A baby girl was born yesterday evening. The baby is healthy and the mother, too. ”Bart Overvliet, head of the Raelian movement's Dutch branch, told Reuters by telephone.

The woman was now in the Netherlands with her partner, he said, although he did not know where the birth had actually taken place, or even if it had been in the Netherlands itself.

The birth resulted from a procedure by Clonaid, the cloning firm that said it had organized the birth of the first human clone, named Eve, to a 31-year-old American on Tuesday, December 26.

But Harry Griffin, head of Britain's Roslin Institute which cloned the fist adult mammal, Dolly the sheep, in 1996, said the group had provided no proof that two cloned babies existed.

“There is no mason to believe this is anything other than a long drawn-out publicity stunt, ”he told Reuters.

Colnaid's claims have led to widespread doubt among mainstream scientific experts and the company has not yet to provide DNA samples or other evidence to support its claim.

Severino Antinori, an Italian fertility doctor involved in separate human cloning projects, said he thought the report of the record clone's birth was as fake as the first.

“This news makes me laugh. It's a mystery to me how anybody could believe these people who have no scientific track record. It is an absolute lie. ”He told Reuters.

You are enrolled in a full–time school called“life”.Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum.

Why are you here? What is your purpose?Humans have sought to discover the meaning of life for a very long time. What we and our ancestors have overlooked, however, is that there is no one answer. The meaning of life is different for every individual.

Each person has his or her own purpose and distinct path, unique and separate from anyone else’s.As you travel your life path, you will be presented with numerous lessons that you will need to learn in order to fulfill that purpose. The lessons you are presented with are specific to you; learning these lessons is the key to discovering and fulfilling the meaning and connection of your own life.

As you travel through your lifetime, you may encounter challenging lessons that others don’t have to face, while others spend years struggling with challenges that you don’t need to deal with. You may never know why you are blessed with a wonderful marriage, while your friends suffer through bitter arguments and painful divorces, just as you cannot be sure why you struggle financially while your peers enjoy abundance. The only thing you can count on for certain is that you will be presented with all the lessons that you specifically need to learn; whether you choose to learn them or not is entirely up to you.

The challenge here, therefore, is to align(與……保持一致)yourself with your own unique path by learning individual lessons. This is one of the most difficult challenges you will be face with in your lifetime, as sometimes your path will be completely different from others’.But, remember, don’t compare your path to the people around you and focus on the difference between their lessons and yours. You need to remember that you will only be faced with lessons that you are capable of learning and are specific to your own growth.

Our sense of fairness is the expectation of equality-the assumption that all things are equal and justice will always prevail.Life is not, in fact, fair, and you may indeed have a more difficult life path than others around you, deserved or not.Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and everyone needs to handle his or her own circumstances differently. If you want to move toward calm, you will be required to move out of the complaining phase of“it’s not fair”.Focusing on the unfairness of circumstances keeps you comparing yourself with others rather than appreciating your own special uniqueness. You miss out on learning your individual lessons by distracting yourself with feelings of bitterness and anger.

(1)

Life is called a full-time school, because ________.

[ ]

A.

it is full of all lessons to learn

B.

you have plenty of time to learn lessons

C.

you meet with specific lessons every day

D.

there are so many subjects for you to choose

(2)

According to the passage, how can the meaning of your life be realized?

[ ]

A.

Having the same opinions as others.

B.

Taking the distinct path from others.

C.

Learning the lessons presented to you.

D.

Doing the different things from others.

(3)

From the passage we can conclude ________.

[ ]

A.

everyone has his own track to follow

B.

the same things usually happen to the peers

C.

a painful divorce must lie in financial problems

D.

a wealthy man must have a wonderful marriage

(4)

Which of the following is TRUE?

[ ]

A.

All things are equal and justice will always prevail.

B.

You should learn to appreciate your specific uniqueness.

C.

One has to fix his mind on unfairness of circumstances.

D.

You have to complain“it’s not fair”whenever possible.

I think it was my mother who taught me the meaning of honesty. Not because she actually was honest, but because she lied all the time. She felt that the easiest way out of any given situation was generally the best way out. And, for her, that generally meant telling a “little white lie”.As a young child I thought it was kind of cool. And, naturally, when I would come to her with a concern or question wondering what I should do, she generally advised me to lie.

“Mom, I told Theresa that I would go over to her house, but now I would rather go to Sue's house to play.”

“Tell Theresa you're sick,” she would advise. And generally I did.But I didn't seem blessed with her lack of conscience. On many painful occasions Theresa would find out that I really went to Sue's house without her. These occasions taught me that it is more painful to be caught in a lie than it is to tell the truth in the first place.I wondered how it was possible that my mother had never learned that lesson.

I started thinking of all the lies that I'd heard her tell.I remembered the time she told someone that her favorite restaurant had closed, because she didn't want to see them there anymore.Or the time she told Dad that she loved the lawn-mower he gave her for her birthday.Or when she claimed that our phone lines had been down when she was trying to explain why she hadn't been in touch with a friend of hers for weeks. And what bothered me even more were all the times she had involved me into her lies.Like the time she told my guidance counselor that I had to miss school for exploratory surgery, when she really needed me to babysit. And it even started to bother me when someone would call for her and she would ask me to tell them that she wasn't there.

So, I started my own personai fight against her dishonesty. When I answered the phone and it was someone my mother didn't want to talk to, I said, “Louise, mom is here, but she doesn't want to talk to you.” The first time I did it, she punished me, but I refused to apologize.I told her that I had decided that it was wrong to lie.And the next time it happened I did the same thing. Finally, she approached me and said, “I agree that lying is not the best thing to do, but we need to find a way to be honest without being rude.” She admitted that her methods weren't right, and I admitted that mine were a bit too extreme.

Over the past few years, the two of us have worked together to be honest-and yet kind.Honesty should mean more than not lying. It should mean speaking the truth in kindness.Though I started by trying to teach my mom the importance of honesty, I ended up gaining a deeper understanding of the meaning of the term.

(1)

The author's mother _________.

[ ]

A.

thought white lies were not lies

B.

helped the author get out of trouble with white lies

C.

told the author to lie when in trouble

D.

taught the author the importance of being honest

(2)

The author _________.

[ ]

A.

was thankful to her mother's advice

B.

felt more awkward when being caught lying

C.

found that telling the truth hurt more than telling a lie

D.

felt guilty when hurting people with her honesty

(3)

It can be inferred that the author's mother _________.

[ ]

A.

met her friends in the same restaurant regularly

B.

didn't get along with the author's teachers

C.

was not popular among her friends

D.

wanted to have something else for her birthday

(4)

Finally the author and her mother agreed that _________.

[ ]

A.

kind-heartedness is more important than honesty

B.

appropriate methods are the key to telling a good lie

C.

honesty is defined as kindness as well as truthfulness

D.

absolute honesty is basic to good interpersonal relationships

BEIJING-Seven prestigious(有聲望的)universities in China announced Sunday that they would begin using the same independent exam-besides the national one-to test students hoping to gain entrance to them in 2011.

The seven are Peking University, Beihang University, Beijing Normal University, Nankai University, Fudan University, Xiamen University and Hong Kong University.

Students who want to gain entrance to any of the seven universities will only have to sit one independent exam, according to the joint announcement.

"This will help lighten the students' load, otherwise they must take several exams for different universities," said the announcement.

Passing the exam could result in more than one interview chance, giving the students more opportunities to choose their favorite universities.

China’s college entrance exam system is undergoing reform as universities aim to select students based on independent criteria(標準)rather than just using the results of the national exam.

In 2003, Peking University and another 21 universities were allowed to pilot(試用)the reform by using their own criteria to independently select five percent of their students.

Now nearly 80 universities across the country have the right to select talented students based on their own exams.

Education experts regard universities selecting students according to independent examinations as conducive(有助的)to better understanding where the students' talents lie.

Although this may be the case, it has also created problems as students may sit many different exams as they often apply for a number of universities.

To relieve(緩解)students from such pressures, the national education outline(綱要)(2010-2020)released in July this year encourages high-level universities to group together to use the same exams.

We’ve all met with something that slows us down, for example, the bumps(顛簸)in the road, the setbacks. You just have to keep in mind that a setback is only temporary and greater things lie ahead. Therefore, keep moving forward, developing what you have, since you’ve already built a solid foundation on which you can rely.

It is easy just to quit, give up and ignore the hard work you have put into something. But we believe in the “two steps forward, one step back” philosophy. So how can you react when something doesn’t turn out as you’ve expected it to be?

First, be objective.Step back and look at the situation. Is your setback really that significant, or will it just require a little extra effort? Then, plan your next move. You can ask for help.Don’t be afraid or ashamed to do this.Frequently, people are more than willing to give you support and advice. You don’t have to be perfect; after all, nobody else is.Next, bounce back.Reevaluate the goals you should have set for yourself at the beginning and retool(改組)them when necessary.Goals should be realistic and specific, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be flexible.Instead of looking at your project as a disaster or failure, view it with success.Concentrate on how great it will feel after it is finally done, after you have put your all into it.Instead of focusing on a possible unsatisfactory performance one single time, take a moment to sit back and reward yourself for all that you have accomplished.

Above all, don’t live with regrets.Success is never easy.It remains up to you whether you will give up, or fight through the tough battles to earn whatever you want.Keep reaching for your goals and you will achieve them. One small setback is nothing if you really want something and are willing to work for it.
