       A.Examined        B.Examining        C.Being examined    D.Having been examined

Charles Willson Peale’s George Washington at Princeton is on show at the Museum which was lent from a private collection . This visually (視覺上) striking and finely made life-size portrait  records Washington’s 6-foot-2-inch figure in a pose highlighting strength , calmness , and elegance .It is put up in a room neighboring to the Powel House parlor , a period room from one of Philadelphia’s greatest eighteenth-century private homes , where Washington was frequently entertained by his friends , Samuel and Elizabeth Powel . Both spaces contain important examples of furniture by Philadelphia’s finest craftsmen(工匠) , such as Thomas Afflect and John Aitken . Among these is a side chair specially ordered by the Washington when living in Philadelphia .

Painted in Philadelphia in 1779, Peale’s painting was immediately sent to Europe to raise Washington’s reputation as a leader and the cause of the American Revolution , then in progress . Later ,during Europe’s Napoleonic Wars , a Spanish  with strong sympathies with American Revolution owned the picture . At that time he added the complicated carved explanation to it , which describes Washington as “a liberator of his country who gave up absolute power.”

I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham's for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I'll never forget.

I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock(貨物) and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds”(clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.

When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less

confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn't believe my eyes; this wasn't shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn't keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.

Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colours and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small child

ren to crawl(爬行) through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.

Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole

day continued like that, but I kept my temper(脾氣)! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realise why, twice a year, ?Graham's? were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.

In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.

You won't believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

1.What kind of clothes is likely to be sold 5% cheaper?

B.The customers kept their temper while looking for clothes they wanted.

C.Small children enjoyed crawling through people's legs.

D.The security guards were fearless of the crowd.

3.In the author's opinion, why were Graham's happy to make their expensive store into a “battlefield”?

A.There were too many clothes and they wanted to clear them in the sales.

B.They were eager to show that they were clever at doing business.

C.They could take the chance to raise the prices of all their clothes.

D.They wanted to make more money by having sales.

4.The expression “_________crashed out” means ________.

A.chatted with her friendsB.slept soundlyC.broke downD.dined out

5.  What would be the best title for the passage?

A.The Best Bargain                B.Hunting for a Job

C.Sale Fever                      D.A Pleasant Fortnight

In the 19th century, Americans from the eastern states moved out west to settle in the rich new lands along the Pacific Coast. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing “the Great American Desert” in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon.

The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat, sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and on TV.

In Arizona, man-made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country. At Lake Powell, the red stone arch of Rainbow Bridge rises high above the blue lake.

There are few roads. Many areas of Lake Powell’s shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures, painted on the rocks.

In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130°F—165°F. There is less than inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America---925 metres below sea level. In the 1800s, many travelers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.

Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Snakes and rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live underground and come out at night, when it is cool. Plants such as cacti need very little water. When it does rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with brilliant (very bright) colours.

A.enjoyed the trip                     B.wanted to make their home there

C.wanted to find new grassland there   D.had no water to drink

A.the western desert is a good place for people to live in

B.there is little water but there are many trees in the desert

C.the desert is dangerous but it is full of beauty

D.till now, people know little about the desert

3.In the 1800s, many travelers died in Death Valley because of            .

    A.illness                           B.high temperature

    C.cold weather                      D.poisonous water

4.In the desert, animals will die           .

A.if they move about                B.if they can’t make holes underground

C.if they come out at night         D.if they drink much water
