Bill Gates was born on October 28th, 1955. He and his two sisters grew up in Seattle. Their father, William H. Gates II, was a Seattle lawyer. Mary Gates, their late mother, was a school teacher.
Gates attended public elementary school before moving on to the private Lakeside School in North Seattle. It was at Lakeside that Gates began his career in personal computer soft- ware, programming computers at age 13.
In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, who is now Microsoft's president. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version (版本) of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer---the MITS Astair. In his junior year, Gates dropped out of Harvard to devote his energies full-time to Microsoft, a company he had started in 1975 with his boyhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the personal computer would be a valuable tool on every office desk-top and in every home, they began developing software for personal computers.
Gates' foresight has led to the success of Microsoft and the software industry. He plays an important role in the technical development of new products. Much of his time is devoted to meeting with customers and staying in touch with Microsoft employees around the world through e-mail.
In the dozen years since Microsoft went public, Gates has donated more than $ 800 million to charities (慈善機構(gòu)), including $ 200 million to the Gates Library Foundation to help libraries in North America make use of new technologies and the Information Age.

　　The arrival of computer, some people predicted, soon make paper a thing out of date．And guess what?Bill Gate’s dream of a computer on every desk has been more or less realized．Yet, most of people working at those desks fire knee-deep in paper．

　　Some research from a new book, the Myth of Paperless Office suggests our increasing use of paper is due to the introduction of the very digital technology that was supposed to wipe it out．The studies show that it can lead to a 40％rise in paper consumption．

　　Xerox’s main business involved paper, and it was also alarmed by the prospect of its going out of fashion．So the research center invented the computing and printer technology that made sure it didn’t．Xerox knew what they were doing．

　　But our attachment to paper is truly amazing．Why store e－mail messages in paper files, which take up valuable space and are effectively unsearchable, when you can keep them on a hard disk and look through them for keywords?Why print off quantities of documents which is to be thrown away after the meeting is over, when they can be handed out electronically via intranets(內(nèi)部互聯(lián)網(wǎng))?

　　If people love paper, there must be a reason for it．It is highly portable, flexible,

and consumes no battery power．And it doesn’t have to be turned on before you can read it．

　　So the problem with the predictions is that they are always solution-driven．In fact, technology is not always the answer．The answer is not that people use so much paper, but that they don’t make good use of it．

Chinese President Hu Jintao, on his way to talks with President George W. Bush in Washington, on Tuesday met with Bill Gates.

After the meeting with Gates, the world's richest man, at Microsoft's headquarters, Hu restated that China would move against software pirates all the time(盜版軟件).

"I'd also like to take this opportunity to assure you, Bill Gates, that we will certainly honor our words in protecting intellectual property rights," Hu said.

In his brief visit to the Microsoft campus, Hu, accompanied by Gates and company CEO Steve Ballmer, saw some business technology demonstrations and toured Microsoft's Home of the Future, which features experimental technology that might someday be used in people's living spaces.

Following the visit at Microsoft, about 100 guests, including former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former Gov. Gary Locke, the first Chinese-American governor, were invited to Gates' $100 million lakeside house on Lake Washington for a dinner.

China has recently begun requiring Chinese computer makers to load legal software on their machines.
