Erik Weihenmayer was born with an eye problem. As a child, his eyesight(視力) became worse and then, at the age of 13, he lost his sight. However, he did not lose his heart to have a full and active life.

Erik is interested in many sports, and his favorite one is mountaineering. In 1995, he reached the top Mount Mckinley and then climbed the dangerous 100-meter rock wall of EL Capitan. Every year thousands of people visit Pompeii(龐貝), Italy. Pompeii is famous for its stadium(體育館) and theatres, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not see Pompeii’s people because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2000 years.

Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It was at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano(火山). Mount Vesuvisus had not erupted(噴發) for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.

In August of AD79, Mount Vesuvius erupted, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When it ended two days later, Pompeii was buried(掩埋) under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.

For centuries, Pompeii was under the ground quietly. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. there were streets, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us much about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses had some dark blue color in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too. In one bakery there were 81 round loaves of bread－a kind of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Small boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear it to make their eyes beautiful.

Ginseppe has died, but his work goes on. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that attract the tourists to Pomeii.
