Ever seen a British judge or barrister（大律師）wearing funny clothes? It is tradition for them to wear a gown（長袍）and a wig（假發）．This tradition is hundreds of years old．
The wig is a very important part of the costume．King Louis XIII of France made wigs popular in 1624．He went bald when he was very young so he started to wear one．He started a fashion for wearing wigs that would last for over 100 years! By l680 most judges and barristers wore wigs in court．The bigger the wig，the better!
Today a very important person is sometimes called a“bigwig”．The wigs were made with human hair．Now the wigs are made of horsehair．They are kept in a special box when they are not being worn．They are expensive to buy but they last a very long time．
Young barristers wear a black gown，made of cotton and a small wig．When they get older they wear a gown made of silk．
Judges also wear wigs but the colour of their gown is sometimes red．
Barristers and judges are trying to change the law so that they don’t have to wear wigs any longer．They say they are too uncomfortable．So far，the British Government has not changed the law．The British people still like to see traditional clothes in the courtroom．It can’t be much fun for the judges and barristers on hot summer days!
