I would just like to say that I’ve always admired your kindness towards people when you found them in trouble. I’ve noticed that you have always thanked people for simply doing their work. Although you might think it was a small thing,I was touched by what you do. It shows you have got well educated. I remember one afternoon my seeing you offer to drive a girl home because she didn’t have a ride. What surprised me was that you had to stay at school, but it took you much time to drive her home anyway, and drove back to school because she lived far away. I could not have been a good boy in your class and I made a lot of trouble at school, but upon recalling the teachers I had met before, your compassionate(富于同情心的)nature was unforgettable and struck me deeply. I just want to thank you very much for that, even if this letter seems simple.

May your tender heart inspire others as well!

A former student of yours

Dropping this letter off at the mailbox in post office, I felt I was a bit closer to her, and I admired her kindness from a distance. She is so nice and it breaks my heart when seeing many students take advantage of her gentle heart and be disrespectful towards her. I hope the letter means something to her and that it will increase her confidence. She will not know who it’s from because then she will think a lot of her former students will never forget her.

41.What moved the author most is the teacher’s __________ .

B

The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bunches(串)of bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life. “Bananas 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira. ” He said in a low voice. I bargained him down to 200 total for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed ,I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn’t have change, so I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.

When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it’s not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing at the corner selling fruit in the burning sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us.

I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. He waved them away. “What’s up?” I asked him. “ I … I don’t have money to buy books for school. ” I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills. “Will this help?” I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year. “Thank you, sir, ”he said. “Thank you very much!”

When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for schoolbooks. What if he’s a cheat(騙子)? And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? Later, I realized that I didn’t know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.

Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency in northern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive. When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face.

       “ Oh, gosh! Long time.”

“Are you in school now?” I asked.

       He nodded.

“That’s good,” I said. A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted. “Here,” I held out a 500 naira bill. “ Take this.” He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “It’s a gift.”

He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back. His face shone with sweat(汗水). He dropped a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts in the front seat before he said, “ I’ve been waiting to give these to you.”

45.What was the author’s first impression of the boy?

       A. He seemed to be poor and greedy.    B. He seemed to have suffered a lot.

C. asked him for money for his schoolbooks       D. tried to take advantage of him

              A. Because he had enough money to do that.

B. Because he had learnt to help others since childhood.

C. Because he held a higher position in the society

D. Because he had been asked by the news agency to do so.

       48. Which of the following best describes the boy?

              A. Brave and polite.             B. Kind and smart.

Key points about the disasters on Britain

On average, an earthquake strikes the British Isles every four days.

10% population of Britain inland live under threat from the 51 active volcanoes.

There are more tornadoes per square mile each year in Britain than the USA.

In Britain, five million people in two million homes live in flood possible areas.

Large tsunami(海嘯)waves travel across oceans at a speed of up to 500mph (800kph). Waves hitting coastlines have thrown 20-ton rocks hundreds of meters inland.

Droughts starve the land of nourishment(營養(yǎng)), replacing them with mineral salts.

Could natural disasters destroy Britain?

       Yes

No

If the volcano on La Palma in the Canaries explodes, a 500m high mega tsunami could engulf(吞沒)low-lying parts of the UK.

Though some scientists believe it will happen, it’s unlikely for the nest few thousand years.

One of Britain’s most big tornadoes destroyed a church and 600 homes in central London in 1091.

Most British houses are now built from brick and are much more sturdy.

In 1995, a hurricane doubled back from the Caribbean and hit Britain.

This UK storm was only the remainder of a hurricane and had not so much strength.

North-west Wales is one of the active earthquake places in the whole UK. In 1984, a quake about 5.4 on the Richter scale broke out. Another could hit any day now.

An earthquake of this level rarely causes huge damage. Quakes above 5 are few in the UK, and there is no proof that another is due soon.

49. According to this passage, about______ earthquakes happen in Britain every year.

              A. 70            B. 80             C. 90             D.100

50.People who think hurricanes will not do great harm to Britain hold the idea that_______.

              A. a hurricane like 1995 will never come again

B. hurricanes lost their power when arriving in Britain

C. people will know ahead of time when the hurricanes come

D. the buildings now are strong enough to avoid being damaged

51. The underlined word “sturdy” may be similar in meaning to “______”

              A. big B. strong C. modern D. tall

52. It seems that the author wrote this article to ______.

              A. advise people to stay at home when disasters happen

B. teach people how to avoid the natural disasters

C. remove people’s worries about the disasters

D. discuss natural disasters in Britain further

D

The qualities required for a hero are different with times, and sometimes great figures of a certain period would surprise the people of another generation. For example, John Lennon’s death in December of 1980 made his admirers very sad. Few deaths have caused such sadness in so many countries throughout the history of the world. There is no doubt that Lennon was a hero of his admirers. Why? What had he done that was so unusual? “John was not just a musician, ” said one of his admirers. “He had known how to express our generation’s feelings in the late 1960s. He was our voice and our guide; he changed with us over the years ,always a little ahead of us; he opened new horizons(眼界)for us and encouraged us to do what we wanted. To us he talked of love and peace; he was the big brother we needed in a troubled time.” Some of his admirers knew he was not perfect; but they chose to ignore his dark side to remain grateful for the contribution he had made in their lives. There are surely many people who don’t consider John Lennon a hero, who in fact have a low opinion of him. But it is not unusual for one person’s hero to be another’s villain(壞人). Think of all the leaders and revolutionaries who are deeply respected by one nation or one generation, and hated by others.

Television ,and films offer many shallow(淺薄的)heroes to their young audience. Many parents are unhappy to see their children’s admiration ideas or talent. But such heroes do not last long; for a few years the growing teenagers are laughing at these objects of their admiration. They start looking for better guides. And no matter what they say, they do find them: The student who is clever enough to recognize qualities in his father’s friend has a perfectly good hero of his own, and one who is much easier to imitate than George Washington.

It may be difficult to be a hero in the Western world these days, under the searching eyes of a critical society. But surely excellence has not disappeared completely; there are still individuals who are better than their fellow men by their wisdom, their courage, or their characters. They can be heroes if people are willing to ignore their human imperfections. Heroes are needed everywhere, at any time. It’s a sad sky that has no shining stars.

53.The author believes that a hero_____.

              A. will be respected by all generations  B. must be a superman

C. is a famous musician             D. can be a villain to some other people

       54. From the passage, it is obvious that shallow heroes____.

              A. are good guides for young generations    B. are often admired by children

C. may be father’s good friends            D. are difficult to imitate

       55. Which of the following statements is true? ______

              A. It’s sad for the modern world not to have heroes.

B. A hero must ignore his dark side.

C. Nowadays, there is no hero any more in the Western world.

D. In modern society, everyone does as well as others.

       56. All the following about John Lennon are true except ____.

              A. John Lennon was good at expressing the feelings in the late 1960s

B. John Lennon contributed a lot to his time

C. John Lennon always changed his way of living to make his admirers excited

D. to some people, John Lennon was helpful when they were in trouble

The Great Wall of China, Rome’s Colosseum, India’s Taj Mahal, the pyramids of Giza and three architectural marvels from Latin America were chosen as the new seven wonders of the world chosen in a global poll released on Saturday on July 7, 2007.

About 100 million votes were cast by the Internet and cellphone text messages, said New 7 Wonders, the nonprofit organization that conducted the poll.

The seven beat out 14 other important landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Easter Island in the Pacific, the Statue of Liberty, the Acropolis, Russia’s Kremlin and Australia’s Sydney Opera House.

The pyramids of Giza, the only surviving structures from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, were assured of maintaining their status in addition to the new seven after angry Egyptian officials said it was a disgrace they had to compete.

The campaign to name new wonders was launched in 1999 by the Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. Almost 200 nominations(提名) came in, and the list was narrowed to the 21 most-voted by the start of 2006. Organizers admit there was no way to prevent people from voting more than once for their favorite.

Many jeered(嘲諷) when the Statue of Liberty was announced as one of the candidates. Portugal was widely opposed to the US-led invasion of Iraq.

The Colosseum, the Great Wall, Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal and Petra had been among the leading, candidates since January, while the Statue of Christ Redeemer received a surge(急速增加) in votes more recently.

Weber’s Switzerland-based foundation aims to promote cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments. It relies on private donations and revenue(稅收) from selling broadcasting rights.

The traditional seven wonders were concentrated in the Mediterranean and Middle East. That list was derived from lists of marvels compiled by ancient Greek observers, the best known being Antipater of Sidon, a writer in the 2nd century B.C.

57. Which of the following is NOT one of the new seven wonders of the world?

A. The Eiffel Tower         B. Rome’s Colosseum

C. India’s Taj Mahal         D. The pyramids of Giza

58. The Statue of Liberty failed to be chosen as one of the new seven wonders of the world because_______。

A.it didn’t turn up as one candidate for the new seven wonders of the wonders

B.the government didn’t allow it to compete in the vote for the new seven wonders

C.most people in Portugal were strongly against the US-led invasion of Iraq

D.the organization New 7 Wonders refused the request of the Statue of Liberty

59. How many years did the campaign to name the new seven wonders last?

A.Two       B.Four       C.Six      D.Eight

60.What’s the best title for the passage?

A.The Great Wall is chosen as one of the world’s new seven wonders

B.Seven new wonders of the world have been chosen

C.About 100 million people voted for seven new wonders

D.Many great architectures failed in seven new wonders vote

Recently, the students in our school had a discussion about whether students should stay at school at weekends or not.

Some students are in favor of staying at school. They think if they stay at school, they can have more studying time. What’s more, they can turn to their teachers for help or discuss with their classmates when they come across some problems in their studies. In addition, they can save money on traffic fares by staying at school.

However, other students are against the idea. They think going back home at weekends is a good chance to stay with their parents. They can help their parents do some housework. Besides, they can have a good rest at home.

In my opinion, whether to stay at school or not depends on the students’ own habits and need.
