閱讀理解

People have long thought that dinosaurs were brown or gray in color. To examine is one important way to find out the answer. The word“examine”is to look at or consider something in detail in order to discover something about them. After examining the remains(遺骸)of a dinosaur, scientists say they have found evidence it had bright-coloured feathers. The findings were printed in Science magazine.

American and Chinese scientists did careful research and re-built the feathers of a flightless dinosaur. The small, two-legged creature(生物)lived about one hundred-fifty million years ago.It would have weighed only about one hundred ten grams. The dinosaur's remains were discovered in Liaoning Province in China.Researchers studied melanosomes(黑素體)in the feathers. These melanosomes are small, color-producing things, and they formed as the dinosaur was developing. The researchers compared them to the melanosomes that control the colour of feathers on modern birds. They were then able to make out the colors of the dinosaur feathers. The dinosaur appeared to have a dark gray or black body. The top of the creature was light brown in color. And, it had bright white wings. Each of the feathers had black on the end.

Richard Prum, a biologist at Yale University, says the melanosomes were in very good condition. He says the dinosaur would be a beautiful creature if it were still alive.

The discovery is useful to scientists in another way.It helps them better understand not only how dinosaurs looked but also how they lived in their daily life. Some researchers plan to use this way to study the colours of other feathered dinosaurs.

Many animals hide to stay alive. They hide in many ways. Some animals hide in leaves; some animals hide in snow. Usually their colors or shapes help protect them. It’s hard to see an Arctic bear in snow. Its white fur helps protect it. Chameleons(變色龍) can hide by changing colors. Their skin turns the same color as what is around them. Some chameleons can change colors in five minutes.
Many animals try to look bigger than they are to stay alive. Some animals can make other animals think they are very big. If they look very big, animals that are looking for food will run away. Bears can walk on two legs. They look very, very scary. Some animals will run away from them.
Many animals try to stay around other animals. This helps them stay alive. Zebras stay close together so that they can help each other look out of danger. A recent survey of 2000 parents in Britain showed that they are often afraid of science questions asked by their curious children only because they have no idea what the answer is. Here is a list of some simple questions that you can ask your parents to see if they know the answers.
Q: Why is the sky blue?
A: You probably know white sunlight is made up of seven colors. While it moves in a straight line when going through space, it starts to divide as it hits “raised area” in the atmosphere. The ones with longest wavelengths pass through easily. The blue , however , can be taken in by the gas molecules (分子) because it has a shorter wavelength , which in turn scatters (使分散) it in different directions. That’s why when you look up at the sky, it appears to be blue.
Q:Why does the moon sometimes appear during the daytime?
A: The simple answer to that is because just like any other object it is being lit by the sun. As long as it is around 45 degrees or even 90 degrees off the sun, it will receive light and be able to be seen. The only time it is not able to be seen during its 28-day orbit (軌道) around the earth is when it is right between the earth and the sun. That’s because its back , which is not lit by the sun, is facing us.
Q: Where do birds/ honeybees go in winter?
A: While the bird part is quite easy, since a lot of them get together and travel, the honeybee part is likely to puzzle your parents. It turns out that these busy insects stop being that active when the temperature drops below 50°F. Instead ,they get together in the lower central area of the hive (蜂巢)and form a ball around their queen. This helps keep both warm enough to survive the cold winter months.
【小題1】The sky looks blue mainly because the color blue in the sunlight_______.

A.has the longest wavelength among all the colors
B.cannot be taken in by the gas molecules
C.doesn’t hit “raised area” in the atmosphere
D.cannot pass through space successfully
【小題2】How long can’t the moon be seen during the daytime in a month?
A.2 B.28 C.30 D.31
【小題3】What do honeybees choose to do when the temperature drops below 50°F?
A.They choose to be active in the wild.
B.They choose to keep themselves warm.
C.They choose to travel to a warm place.
D.They choose to get together in the upper central area of the hive.
【小題4】What is NOT explained in the passage?
A.Why is the sky blue?
B.Why is the moon able to be seen during the daytime?
C.Why do birds travel in winter?
D.Where do honeybees go in winter?
