When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.

One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touches(觸動)me. It suggested everyone should give something helpful to the people in the earthquake. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan. "We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We'll share what we have with them.”

I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and give away some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly when the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh, dear,” I said. “You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan said, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too.”

I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It's easy to give something that we don't  want any more, but harder to give what we cherish(珍愛), isn’t it?

In fall 2006,the National Basketball Association (NBA)started using basketballs made with synthetic ,or man-made ,material instead of leather(皮革).They made the change be- cause they wanted every basketball they use to feel and bounce(彈起)the same. Not all leather balls are exactly alike in weight or how they bounce, but the synthetic balls are.

However, some players complained right away that the new balls bounced differently and were actually harder to control than the leather ones.

Physics helped answer questions about why the new balls felt different. For example, the scientists studied friction(摩擦力),which in this case affects the ability of a player to hold onto a ball."The greater the friction, the better it will stick to his hand,"explains a scientist.

Tests on both wet and dry balls showed that while the synthetic ball was easier to hold onto when dry,it had less friction and became much harder to hold onto when wet. That's because sweat(汗水) stays on the surface of the synthetic balls but gets taken into the leather balls.

The scientists also tested bounce and found that the logo (商標)printed on the new balls made their surface uneven(不平) and caused them to bounce a little strangely com- pared with the leather balls.

In January, the NBA went back to using the leather bails. They aren't perfect, but for now, that's just the way the ball bounces.

1.Why were the synthetic balls expected to be used in NBA according to the text?

A.Because they are easier to control.           B.Because they waste less material.

C.Because they look exactly alike.             D.Because they feel and bounce alike.

2.The ball is easier to hold on to_________

A.when friction is greater                    B.when friction is less

C.when it is heavier                         D.when it bounces strangely

3.The synthetic ball bounces differently from the leather one mainly because _________

A.it is wet                                  B.it is dry

C.there's a logo on it                       D.its weight remains the same

4.It can be inferred(推斷) from the text that _________.

A.a synthetic ball takes in water faster than a leather ball

B.a leather ball is more difficult to make than a synthetic one

C.a synthetic ball is more expensive than a leather ball

D.a leather ball may increase its weight during a game

5.The underlined word" They" in the last paragraph refers to __________.

A.the synthetic balls                        B.the leather balls

C.the ball players                          D.the scientists

“I had a Welsh speaking test. I'd had to memorize a paragraph in front of the whole class. I just couldn’t do it,” says 13-year-old Mary. “I pretended to be ill.” But Mary did not enjoy her day off. “I watched TV all day — it was boring. I wished I had gone to school.”
Mary’s story is not unusual in Britain. According to the latest government figures, pupil absences are rising, despite schools taking a hard line on truancy (逃學).
Philippa James, a PhD researcher at Cardiff University’s school of social sciences, thinks she knows why: “The more schools improve methods of detection(檢查), the more children work out better methods of deception.” Teenagers told her it was now harder to skip a single lesson, so they’d miss whole days to avoid being caught.
For several years, James has researched student truancy of 60 teenagers, aged 13 and 14, including Mary, to see how the teenagers truant, for how long, and why.
Through online conversations and face-to-face interviews, she discovered that most truancy was “a response to factors within the school”. Truants are not necessarily less advanced or less intelligent. They complained of teachers who failed to engage them, and of “boring” lessons. “Many truants really enjoy school and believe in education, but drop out when aspects of it were ineffective.” James says.
The views of students like Adam, who believes that skipping lessons has little impact on his schooling, were common. “I only take-off for a lesson, or a couple of days. It doesn’t affect my education,” he told James.
James’ study concludes that schools need to address the question of why pupils want to leave in the first place. “Pupils need help from the start.” she says. “It’s a two-way process – schools must be responsive. We need to look at the reasons for truancy rather than the number, so that instead of walking away from school, students have the skills and chances to talk through problems and make a change.”
【小題1】What is one of the reasons for school truancy according to James’ study?

A.Truants are fallen behind in their studies.
B.Truants have no interest in school subjects.
C.Truants have more interesting things to do.
D.Truants are not satisfied with the teachers.
【小題2】The underlined phrase “taking a hard line” (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to“        ”.
A.experiencing a problem with B.having a strict attitude towards
C.finding it difficult to solve D.having little success with
【小題3】 By citing Adam's remark, James wants to show that      .
A.school education is not efficient and needs improvement
B.it’s a popular belief that occasional truancy won't cause much harm
C.school truancy is becoming more serious and needs more concern
D.even good students may sometimes need a break from school
【小題4】 What is Philippa James’ suggestion to schools?
A.Schools should solve the problem of teachers.
B.Schools should be more active in helping beginner truants.
C.Schools should have a better control of hidden truants.
D.Schools should find out who truant and how they it.
