閱讀下列短文,從每題所給出的(A、B、C、D)四個選項中選出最佳選項。

Up to 65% of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slower at school, scientists say.

So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between eight and ten hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.

But the scientists say many children have missed out on 4, 500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully.Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours’ sleep.Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.

German scientists think that your brain(大腦)keeps working while you are asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out.One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly. This showed that their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!

閱讀理解

閱讀下面短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

How would you like to teach yourself, rather than have teachers? According to the UK's Department of Education and Skills, students will teach themselves in the schools of the future. This means that there will be no more problems such as finding enough teachers.

Estelle Morris, the UK Education Secretary opened the 2002 Educational Technology Conference in London recently. She presented a video showing a computer-generated model of the school of tomorrow. Greater use of computer technology and classroom assistants will help students develop their own way of learning, Morris said. She added that this is a more exciting, as well as more interesting way of learning. At the same time, teachers will be “freed from their traditional role as the source of all knowledge.” Children of all abilities will “form the curriculum around their individual needs.” They will “learn in their own time, at their own speed and in their own environment”.

At home or at school, they will follow their learning programmes by looking at online libraries and watching lessons by world-class teachers and subject experts. Instead of going on field trips, students will use virtual reality. If they don't understand something, they can ask other students “take part in virtual communities with learners with similar needs. They will hand in their work electronically to be auto-market”.

The classroom of the future is fast becoming a reality. And the Department of Education will soon produce a guide to help schools adapt buildings for new technology. These ideas are based on the UK government's plan to create an education system that provides students to develop their individual skills at secondary school level.

Morris said that enabling students to follow study programmes to their own needs means that, in a class of 15-year-olds, some could be starting university learning while others were still learning to read and write.

A spokesman for the UK's National Association of Head Teachers said, “Nothing can change the fact that today's students need to be taught by a qualified, skilled and enthusiastic teaching force, and they need that now.”

1.According to the UK's Department of Education and Skills, the school of the future will ________.

[ ]

A.cause more problems such as not being able to find enough teachers

B.set no homework and no tests for students

C.make good use of computer technology and classroom assistants

D.enable students to learn by themselves without teachers' help

2.If students do not understand something, they can ________.

[ ]

A.go on a field trip

B.go to ask their teachers to help them

C.send e-mails to ask for teachers' help

D.have a look at other learners' homework

3.Which of the following is not mentioned in the article?

[ ]

A.The classroom of the future will become a reality soon.

B.Students can get higher marks by using computer technology.

C.Students can learn in their own way by following study programmes.

D.Students need a skilled and motivated teaching force.

4.The UK government plans to set an education system that ________.

[ ]

A.provides students with a basic knowledge from the beginning

B.gives students more knowledge at primary school level

C.enables 15-year-old students to go to university

D.helps students to learn to read and write at secondary school level

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? You’re not alone.Back experts in the United States are worried that young students are having back and neck problems as a result of carrying too much in their backpacks(schoolbags).

“It hurts my back when I run,” said Oberlin Reyes, a student in Virginia.“It’s hard to get up the stairs with my backpack, because it’s too heavy.”

Oberlin is among students whose backpacks were weighed for a week in a recent study.

They had regular backpacks with two straps(帶子)to carry them, but a number of students with heavy loads had switched to rolling backpacks(which have wheels and can roll on the ground).

Shirley Park, whose backpack weighed 10 kilograms, said she changed to a rolling backpack because she was starting to have back pain.

How much is too much? Experts say students should carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their own body weight.

A few students had one suggestion to lighten the load:less homework.

  P.S.(附)Doctor’s suggestion:

① Lighten the load.Clean out binders(活頁材料)and take home only the books you need that night.

② Wide straps are better. They send out the weight over your shoulders more evenly(均勻).And be sure to wear both straps rather than hanging the pack over one shoulder.

③ Pack smart. The heavier things should be packed closed to the back.

④ Bend both knees when you pick up the pack, and don’t just bend over at the waist(腰).

Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. Their school days are busy enough. After school, though, Cathy takes the two boys from football to basketball. Then she has to take her daughter to piano lessons. The tired children don’t get home until 7 pm. They have a quick supper, and it’s time for homework.
The Taylors are like many American and British parents. They take their children from activity to activity, and try to fit as much as possible into their kids’ lives. Doctors say many children are under too much pressure. Teachers complain(抱怨) about teaching tired kids in the classroom.
Most children take part in after-school clubs. Activities include sports, language learning, music and math classes. Pushy parents are nothing new, but now parents seem to push their children a lot more. Parents see other children doing a lot of things, and they feel their own children should do the same.
Linda Miller, a mother of three in London, knows all about such pressure. “In some families, competition starts from a very young age,” she says. “Mothers send their kids to all kinds of classes when they are very young. And they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.
Dr Alice Green agrees. She also says that these children may find it hard to think for themselves when they are older. “Parents are trying to plan their kids’ lives for them. When these kids are adults, they might find it difficult to plan things for themselves.” Parents should learn to give their kids a bit more time to themselves. On one hand, children need organized activities. On the other hand, they also need time and freedom to relax, and they need time to do things by themselves.
(   ) 8. Cathy Taylor sends her daughter to       .
A. math classes     B. language school B. sport club      D. piano lessons
