Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over the next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to cause cooling.

This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fire in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧) levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.

“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in the amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a result of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicted, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

According to the new findings, taking steps to prevent northern forest fires may __________.

A. result in a warming climate

B. cause the forest fires to occur more frequently

C. lead to a longer fire season

D. protect the forests and the environment there

The following are all the immediate effects after a forest fire EXCEPT __________.

A. large amounts of greenhouse gases enter the atmosphere

B. the levels of ozone which is a type of oxygen increase

C. snow on the ground mirrors more sunlight back into space

D. ashes from the fire fall on the ice surface and take in more radiation from the sun

Earlier studies about northern forest fires __________.

A. analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate

B. indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere

C. suggest that people should take measures to protect environment

D. suggest that the fires will speed up climate warming

The underlined phrase “soak up” in the last paragraph most probably means __________.

A. released         B. absorbed       C. created      D. distributed

From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may __________.

A. warm the climate as the supposition goes

B. allow more snow to reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

C. destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice

D. help to gain more energy rather than release more energy

Governments all over the world make public reports about the condition of their economies. Most countries, including the United States, have used a measure called the gross national product (國民生產總值)or GNP. It includes all goods and services produced by citizens of the country anywhere in the world.

Recently the American Commerce Department has started using a new method to measure production. It is known as the gross domestic product(國內生產總值)or GDP. It counts only goods and services that have been produced within the nation’s borders. Money earned by foreign companies operating in the United States is included in the GDP, but money earned by American companies operating in other countries is not.

Economic experts generally approve of the change. They say that the gross domestic product provides a truer measure of the economy. They also note that most other industrial countries use this method. Therefore it will be easier to study the economies of different countries. Some officials also hope the new system will help them make better economic policy decisions. It will provide them with a clearer understanding of economic activity in the U.S. . The new measure is less likely to be affected by sudden changes in foreign oil prices or in the value of the American dollar in other countries.

Economic experts believe that the change from GNP to GDP will immediately reduce the value of American production by at least 40,000 million dollars a year. But that is really a very small change in the American economy – less than 1% . The Commerce Department reports the unofficial gross domestic product once every three months. The government also continues to report GNP as it has four times a year since 1941.

1.To report the American GNP, the government should not consider goods and services produced _______.

A. by American companies at home

B. by American companies in China

C. by American companies in Singapore

D. by Japanese companies in the United States

2.To report the American GDP, the Commerce Department should count money earned ________.

A. by both American and foreign companies in America

B. by American companies within its own borders

C. by foreign companies in the United States

D. by American companies in its foreign markets

3.GDP is considered better than GNP by some economists because ________.

A. it is something new

B. it is used by most countries

C. it is easier to calculate

D. it is less likely to be affected by the foreign market

4.What will happen to the value of American economy if GDP is used to replace GNP?

A. It will be seriously affected.                B. It will not be affected.

C. It will come down a little.                   D. It will slightly go up.

5.How often are the reports of GDP issued by the American Commerce Department?

A. once every four months                           B. once every three months

C. once every six months                   D. once a year

CHICAGO (AP) On Jan.  l,an order went into effect requiring that every checked bag at more than 400 of the nation's commercial airports be screened for bombs and weapons.

Sunday was expected to the heaviest travel day since Jan.  l. Yet spot checks on Sunday at several  of the nation's airports showed no major delays caused by the new security measures.

At the international terminal for Northwest Airlines at John F.  Kennedy International Airport in New York, passengers waited up to 30 minutes longer than usual.  Their bags were sent through giant screening machines and workers tore open taped boxes and searched through their contents before closing them up again.

Most travelers simply accepted stricter screening developed since the terrorist attacks on Sept.  11,2001,before which only 5 percent of the roughly 2 million bags checked each day were screened for bombs.

The U. S.  government has put an additional 23,000 people into airports to carry out the new order.

Sonny Salgatar, a 23-year-old college student flying home to San Diego from Chicago, was told by an airport officer after the first pass that one of his bags was "hot", meaning there was something he couldn't identify and he wanted to open the bag for an inspection.

The "hot" item turned out to be Salgatar's clothing iron.

"Listen, anything they want to do for security is OK for me," Salgatar said.  But not all of the passengers hold the same viewpoint as Salgatar's, complaining that they had to arrive at the airport too much time ahead of their schedule.

A study has found that people who appear to be constantly distracted (分心) have more “working

memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and handle it mentally.

Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a variety of tasks, such as following teachers' instructions or remembering oral sentences.

During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one of two simple tasks during which researchers checked to ask if the participants' minds were wandering.

At the end, participants measured their working memory ability by remembering a series of letters with simple maths questions.

Daniel, a psychologist in the United States, said that those with higher working memory ability reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance did not suffer.

The results, published online in the journal Psychological Science, appear to confirm previous research that found working memory allows humans to deal with multiple (多種多樣的) thoughts at the same time.

Dr Smallwood,in Leipzig,Germany, said: “What this study seems to suggest is that, when circumstances for the task aren’t very difficult, people who have additional working memory resources arrange them to think about things other than what they're doing. ”

Working memory ability is also associated with general measures of intelligence, such as reading comprehension and IQ scores, and also offers a window into the widespread, but not well understood, field of internally (內部地) driven thoughts.

Dr Smallwood added: “Our results suggest the sorts of planning that people do quite often in daily life—when they are on the bus, when they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower—are probably supported by working memory.

74. The underlined word “them” refers to       .

A. the participants             B. the working memory resources

C. the tasks                         D. the working circumstances

75. What can we learn from the passage?

A. It's not a bad thing for children with wandering minds.

B. The result of the study doesn't agree with the previous research.

C. Circumstances might make children's heads clever.

D. Only working memory can handle difficult problems.
